)osed and used and while some of them are i 7 in a degree ei'ective others are open to serious objection either as to the difficulty of making them, or because of some inconvenience to the wearer who has to apply acollanbntton to them.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved formation of buttoniole guard at the opening of shirt neckbands. i
'Bhe drawing illustrates the invention.
Figure 1 shows an open-front shirt with the improved collar-button guard shown at the left-hand side or underlapping edge. Fig. 2 is a view of the inner surface of the neck-band of a shirt in which a part of the improved collar-button guard is broken away to show the base of the button Fig. 3 shows one end of .fin-unfinished neck-band. Fig. 4 shows the strip or piece of tape that is to form the button-guard. Fig. 5 shows the end of' the. neck-band with the strip attached thereto by the button-hole stitches only. Fig. G is a top-edge view of the neckhand showing the continuous loop-shaped buttonguard and the collar-button in position. Fig. 7 shows one end and the inner surface of the finished neck-band` and the continuous loop-.shaped guard free at one end. Fig. 8 is'a reversed or outer surface view of the. same end of the neckband shown in Fig. 7.
Referring to the drawing it will be seen the shirt is of the open-front style, one side, a, of the front openingis intended to lap over the other side, Z, therefore the underlapped end, c, of .the neck-band, d, will carry the collar button and be next to and in contact with the neck of the wearer. and the improved collanbutton guard, e, is formed 'at this end, c. The neck-band, d, may have 'the usual thickness and usual formation from its over-.lapped end, f, all the way around until reaching the under-lapped end, c.
It will be seen by reference to the draw?A ing, that a strip or piece of tape, e, is em ployed to form the said guard; and the first operation is to lay the said strip Hat on the inner surface of the neck-band and form the button-hole slit and make the button-hole stitches, g, in both the tape and neck-band simultaneously, so that one end of said guard strip will be attached to the neckband by the .button-hole stitches only, as
shown in Fig. 5; the other end, h, of the i guard strip at this stage of the operation isl left free and unattached. The second step of the operation is to form a fold, z', at the extremity of said free' end, and then lay said folded-end, z', on top of the opposite end of the strip and run a cross row of stitches, j, through both ends of the strip; this forms on the neck-band a continuousloop, e, folded to lie flat and forming two ends, one flat side of which loop is attached to the neck- A band, (I, by the button-hole stitches, g, and one end of the loop is fastened to the neckbank ny the cross-row of stitches, j, all other parts of the loop are free' and unattached, as seen in Figs. 6 and 7. This construction o f button guard in the form of a continuous loop with a button-hole worked through both neck-band and one side of the loop and the greater part of the -loop free, makes it convenient for a person to expand or Spread the loop and insert a collar button, k. The same collar-button closes the open-front of the shirt and also holds both ends of a. collar.
Having described claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- An open-front shirt having av neck-band provided at its overlapped end with-a button-hole which opens through thegband, and the underlapped end of the neck-band provided on its inner surface witheJ collar-but.
