IMPROVEMENT iN HANDLES" FOR BARRELS, &c.
Y The seneame :ermee to m :new Leners Pawn: ana making pan of the same.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that, 'Mx'zrofr S. Scorrano, of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State oi' Gounecti cut, hare invented a new and useful Improvement in Self-adjusting Barrel-Handles; and I do -hereby declare that; the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art'to make and use folie-same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a view representing my improved handles as applied to a barrel. y
Figure 2 is adetailed sectional View of my improved handle, taken through the line x z, fig.1, and showing the forward jaw.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish handles which shall beso constructed as xto adjust themselves to barrels, boxes, and other packages, to enable the said barrels, boxes, or packages to he conveniently handled; and
It consists in the handles, constructed substantially as hereinafter more fully described.
` A is the body of the handle, which may be made of wood or other suitable material, and the outer end of which is made of such a form as to be conveniently grasped by the hand.
To the forward ends of the'handle A'is attached', or upon it is formed, a jaw', B, projecting at right angles, or nearly al; right angles, from said handle A.
The-forward'edge of the -jaw B is serrated or formed with teeth or points, as shown in fig. 2, to enable'it to take a firm hold upon the barrel, box, or package to he handled.
To thev middle part of the handle A is attached, or upon it is formed, a hooked jaw, C, as shown in lig. 1. When the handle is to be used lbr handling barrels and other @asks made with chimes, the edge ot' the jaw C may be plane, as the chimes will give it a sufi'- cient hold.
lVh'en a box or other package made without chimes is to be handled, the jaw O should be made with teeth, points, or prongs, uwhich', bya sudden thrust ol the handle, will be forced into the side of the said box or package suiieiently tog-ive the handle a firm hold upon said box or package. l
Having thus described my invention,
I cla-iin as new and `desire to secure by Let-ters Patent* A n improved self-adjusting handle for handling barrele, boxes, and other packages, consist-ing ofthe handpiece A., made of anysuitable form, and t-he jaws B and C, constructed and operatinfgr substantially as herein shown and desrihed, and for the purpose set forth.
lhe above specification of my invention signed by. me this 15th day of August, 1870.
MINOT S. SCOFIELD.
