To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES F. AnAMs, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Phillipsburg, in the county of Warren and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Preparing Fibrous Can-Bodies, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to the manufacture of package cans for use as containers for dry food products such as tea, cofiee, or other finely divided or pulverized substances and comprising a body portion formed from a sheet or fibrous material such as paste board, card board or the like, and having metallic caps or heads, and the in ention relates particularly to the preparation of the fibrous can bodies or the material from which said bodies are formed.
In the preparation of can bodies of the class specified, it is necessary to bevel or taper the opposite ide edges of the sheet or strip from which the said bodies are formed so that when the sheet or strip from which a can is formed is folded, the side edges will overlap in such manner that when said side edges are secured together, the thickness of the body will be the same throughout, and so that the ends of said body will fit in the grooves with which the caps or heads are provlded, so that the walls of said grooves may be compressed to securely hold the ends of the body, and so that a perfectly air tight and moisture tight connection between said caps or head and said body is provided, the transverse dimensions of said grooves andth transverse dimensions of the ends of the body being the same throughout, facilitating this operation and permitting the outer wall of said grooves to be crimped or compressed on the ends of the body so as to securely grasp and hold the same and to form an air tight and moisture tight connection.
The invention described and claimed herein consists of a machine for beveling the opposite side edges of a strip or sheet of fibrous material as it is fed therethrough for the purpose above set out, and by means of which one side edge of said strip or sheet is beveled or chamfered on the top surface thereof, and the other side edge beveled or chamfered on the bottom surface thereof;
and said invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying drawings form a part in which the separate parts of my improvement are deslgnated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section of a machine involving my invention, and taken on the line ll of Fig. 2;Fig. 2 a partial horizontal vertical section on the line 22 of Fig. 1;Fig. 3 a side view of one side portion of the machine looking in the direction of the arrow 3 of Fig. l;-Fig. 4 a vertical transverse section on the line 4ll of Fig. 2, and on an enlarged scale ;Fig. a ection on the line 5-5 of Fig. 8 ;-Fig. a section on the line 66 of Fig. 7 ;Fig. a section on the line 7-7 of Fig. 6 ;Fig. a section on the line 88 of Fig. 5 ;,-Fig. a longitudinal sectional view of one end portion of a can the body of which is prepared and formed according to my invention, said figure also showing the method of connecting a cap or head with one end portion of said body, and ;-Fig. 10 a transverse section on the line 10-10 of Fig. 9.
In the practice of my invention, I provide a frame comprising vertical side members a and a and a central longitudinal table member a secured to the side members a and of, as shown at a and the side member a is provided above the table a with an inwardly directed bracket 25 secured thereto by two pairs of bolts b which pass through vertical slots 6 in said side member a of the frame, and the side member a of the frame is provided below the table a with an inwardly directed bracket 0 similar to the bracket 6, and secured to said member a of the frame by two pairs of bolts 0 which pass through corresponding slots c in said side member a of the frame. Only one pair of bolts 0 and one slot 0 is shown, but thi construction is the same as that by which the bracket 6 is secured to the side member a of the frame, and by means of this method of attaching the brackets b and 0 to the frame, said brackets are made vertica lly adjustable toward and from the table a The bracket 5 is provided with a hanger Z) in which is mounted an emery wheel 5 said wheel being mounted in a plane transversely of the frame, and the wheel 5 is mounted on a shaft 6 which ranges longitudinally of the frame and which also passes through a supplemental hanger formed integrally with the hanger b and said'hanger b is connected with the bracket 2) by a tongue and groove construction, as shown at b in Fig. 2, and by means of screws I) passed downwardly through slots Z2 in the bottom of the bracket '6 and into the hanger b and by means of this construction, the hanger b and shaft and emery wheel 6 are adjustable transversely of the frame and over the table a The shaft Z2 is provided with a Worm 6 and a worm gear 6 is mounted in the sup plemental hanger 5 on a shaft 6 which passes therethrough, and meshes with the worm 6 and said shaft is also provided at the end thereof opposite the emery wheel 72 with a pulley 6 The emery wheel 6 and the parts in connection with which it operates, and by which it is operated, are shown in Figs. 1, 2, 4, 5 and 8.
The table a is provided directly under the emery wheel 6 with a transverse slot on the opposite sides of which and on the opposite sides of the wheel 6 are arranged in vertical planesand transversely of the frame, two pairs of feed and guide rollers (Z, and (Z and (Z and (i and the rollers (Z2 and (Z are mounted in transverse slots 0Z and (Z in the table a and the rollers (Z and (Z are mounted above said table, and one end of the rollers cl, (Z CF and d has a hearing in the side member a of the frame and the other ends of said rollers pass through and are provided with bearings in the side member a of the frame, and the rollers (Z and d are provided with pinions d and CF, and the rollers d and (Z are provided with pinions (Z and and the pinions (Z and (Z are geared in connection by a gear d mounted on a stub shaft (Z secured in the side member a of the frame.
The shaft 6 also has a bearing 6 in the frame member a and is provided at its outer end with a pinion c and the bearing 0 is vertically ad ustable in a vertical slot 6 in the frame'member a and is provided with an arm 0 through which is passed a bolt 6 movable in a vertical slot (2 in the frame member a and by means of this construction, the bearing 6 of the shaft 6 may be vertically adjusted to correspond with the vertical adjustment of the bracket 6.
An arm 6 is loosely suspended from the outer end of the shaft 6 and provided with a central longitudinal slot 6 and a stub shaft 6 is passed through said slot and vertically adjustable therein, and a gear 6 is mounted on said stub shaft and meshes with the pinion e and with the pinion d on the roller (Z and the lower end of the arm 6 is provided with a transverse head 6 hav- 'ing a slot 6 through which is passed a pin e secured in the frame member (4 and by means of this construction the arm 6 may be swung into difierent positions and secured therein, and the object of this construction is to provide for'the vertical ad justment of the bracket 6 together with the operation of the rollers cl, (Z (Z and (Z*.
Mounted in the slot a in the table a? below the emery wheel 6 is a tapered roller f, the shaft f of which is mounted in supports f connected with the bottom of the table a by bolts f the heads of which are movable in flanged grooves f in said table, as shown in Fig. 5, and by means of this construction, the roller f may be'adjusted transversely of the table to correspond with the adjustment of the emery wheel 6 Mounted on the bracket 0 is a support 9 in which is mounted a shaft g provided with an emery wheel 9 similar to the wheel 6 and a pulley g, and the wheel g ,'its supports and the parts in connection with which it operates are shown in Figs. 1, 2, 6. and 7. Thewheel also operates in the slot a in the table a and mounted over said slot is a tapered roller h'similar to the roller f. The roller is mounted on a pin 72? having supports if secured on the table a transversely of the slot a and the supports [L3 have an adjustable connection with the table a at h similar to that of the connection of the roller f with said table, and by means of this construction, the roller h is also made adjustable transversely of the table a to correspond with the corresponding adjustment of the support 9, and emery wheel The connection of the support 9 with the bracket 0 at g is also a tongue and groove connection similar to that of the hangerb with the bracket Z), the adjustment being made by means of headed bolts the heads of which are movable in flanged grooves g in the brackets 0.
I have also shown an electric motor 2' mounted on a bracket j secured on the inner side of the side member a of the frame, and the motor 2' is provided with a shaft i having a pulley 2' on which is mounted a belt 6* adapted to engage the pulley 6 on the shaft 6, and another belt 2' adapted to engage or be connected with the pulley 9* on the shaft V 9 and it will be understood that the bracket or support 7' of the motor 6 is, or may be, vertically adjustable on the side member a of the frame, and said motor is, or may be, adjustable transversely of the frame on its support j to accommodate said motor and the belts z'tand 2' to any adjusted position of the shafts b and g in the adjustment of the position of the brackets b and 0 and the corresponding parts of the machine in the operation thereof, as hereinafter described, but it must be understood that my invention is not limited to the use of the motor z nor to any means for adjusting the position thereof, and the adjustments of the various parts of the machine may be effected in any desired manner, and the shafts b and g with the wheels 6 and g mounted thereon, and the shaft 6 and the rollers d, 0?, d and 6Z4 and the corresponding parts of the machine may be driven or operated in any desired manner, and by any preferred means.
I have also shown at a strip or sheet of fibrous material used in the manufacture of can bodies of the class specified, and in practice, this strip is fed through the machine, over and longitudinally of the table a in which operation it passes under the emery wheel 6 and over the roller 7 and under the roller 7b and over the emery wheel 9 It will be understood that the strip or sheet 70 may be of any desired width accord ing to the size or'transverse dimensions of the can or can bodies to be produced, and if desired, the table a may be provided with longitudinal guide strips or devices adjustable transversely of the machine, and between which the strip or sheet 70 may be passed, but said guide strips or devices are not absolutely necessary and may or may not be employed, as the rollers d, 0Z 3 and (i by which the strip or sheet is fed over the table a would serve, under careful management, by the operator or operators, to hold said strip or sheet in proper position.
The operation of the machine will be readily understood from the foregoing description, and as the strip or sheet 70 passes over the table a one side edge portion thereof will be beveled or chamfered on the top surface thereof by the emery wheel 6 and the roller f, as shown in Fig. 8, while the other side edge portion thereof will be beveled or chamfered on the bottom surface thereof, as clearly shown in Fig. 6, by the emery wheel 9 and roller 72,.
It will be understood that any desired bevel or taper of the side edges of the strip or sheet is may be produced by correspondingly forming the operating faces of the wheels 6 and g and the rollers f and h.
After the strip or sheet is has been fed through the machine and finished in the manner described, the can bodies are cut transversely from said strip or sheet. One of these can bodies is shown at m in Figs. 9 and 10, and said body is provided with caps or heads a in the usual manner, and but one of which is shown. After the strip or sheet K: has been fed through the machine, and the material for a can body cut from one end portion thereof, the said material is folded, as shown in Fig. 10, so as to form the can body, in which operation the beveled edges m are overlapped and pasted or glued and pressed together in any suitable manner so that the thickness of the can body will be exactly the same at all points, and so that the end or ends of the body of the can will closely fit in the U- shaped grooves 12. with which the caps or heads a are provided, and in practice, the ends of the body of the can are inserted into said grooves and the walls of said grooves are compressed so as to securely grasp and hold the ends of the body of the can, and so as to form a perfectly air and water tight or moisture tight connection, this operation or result being rendered possible by reason of the fact that the walls of the can body are exactly of the same thickness at all points, and the transverse dimensions of the grooves 712 being substantially of the same dimensions, which fact renders the compression of the walls of said grooves more effectual and more easy of accomplishment. And while I have shown and described'the wheels 6 and g as emery wheels, my invention is not limited to wheels of this class or material, and cutting wheels of any kind or class may be employed, whereby, the de sired result may be produced and it will be apparent, that my invention is not limited to the exact details of construction herein shown and described, and changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages, and I reserve the right to make all such alterations as clearly come within the scope of said claims. It will also be understood that while I have described the operation of my machine as involving the passage of a sheet or strip of fibrous material therethrough from which can bodies are afterward cut, it will be understood that my invention is not limited to this method of operation, and can bodies may first be cut from a sheet of fibrous material and afterward fed through the machine so as to bevel the opposite side edge portions thereof, as herein described, and while I have described my machine as particularly adapted for use in making can bodies out of a sheet of fibrous material, it will be understood that my invention is not limited to the use of fibrous material.

In a machine for forming can bodies from a sheet of fibrous material, a frame provided with a table having a transverse slot, a wheel support mounted over one side portion of said table and provided with an emery wheel adapted to operate in said slot and vertically adjustable, said wheel being adjustable on its support transversely of the table, another support mounted under the opposite side portion of said table and vertically adjustable and provided with an emery wheel which operates in said slot and is adjustable transversely of said table, a roller mounted beneath the emery wheel supported above the table and below said slot, emery wheels mounted above and below the opposite side portions of said table and adapted to operate in said slot, rollers corresponding with said wheels and mounted above and'below the table, and in connection ith which said emery wheels operate, and feed rollers arranged in pairs mounted transversely of said table and on the opposite side of said wheels.
3. in a machine for forming can bodies from a sheet of fibrous material a frame provided with a horizontal table having a transverse slot, emery wheels mounted above and below the opposite side portions of said table and adapted to operate in said slot, rollers mounted above and below the table and above and below said slot and operating in connection with said wheels, and guide rollers arranged in pairs transversely of the table and on the opposite sides of said slot and said wheel.

In a machine of the class described, a frame provided with a table having a transverse slot, wheels supported above and be low the opposite side portions of the table and adapted to operate in said slot, rollers supported above and below the table and above and below said wheels and said slot, and in connection with which said wheels operate, guide rollers arranged on the opposite sides of said slot and said wheel transversely of the table.

In a machine of the class described, a frame provided with a table having a transverse slot, emery wheels mounted above and below the opposite side portions of said. table and adapted to operate in said slot, said wheels being adjustable transversely of the table, rollers mounted above and below the table and said slot and said wheels, and adapted to operate in connection with said wheels, said rollers being adjustable transversely of the table, and guide rollers ar ranged in pairs on the opposite sides of said wheels and said slot. A machine of the class descrlbed comprising a frame providedwith a horizontal table having a main transverse slot, at the opposite sides of which are parallel supplemental slots, feed and guide rollers mounted in said supplemental slots, other feed and guide rollers mounted over said first named feed and guide rollers and operating in connection therewith, and devices operating in the main transverse'slot for beveling the opposite side edge portions of a sheet of fibrous material, as said sheet passes over said table.

A machine of the class described comprising a frame'provided with a horizontal table having a main transverse slot, at the opposite sides of which are parallel supplemental slots, feed and guide rollers mounted in said supplemental slots, other feed and guide rollers mounted over said first named feed and guide rollers and operating in connection therewith, and means for beveling the opposite side edge portions of a sheet of fibrous material, as said sheet passes over said table, comprising cutting wheels mounted above and below the opposite end portions of the main slot, and corresponding rollers mounted below and above the opposite end portions of the main slot, andin connection with which the cutting wheels operate.

A machine of the class described comprising a frame provided with a horizontal table having a main transverse slot, at the opposite sides of which are parallel supplemental slots, feed and guide rollers mounted in said supplemental slots, other feed and guide rollers mounted over said first named feed and guide rollers and operating in connection therewith, and means for beveling the opposite side edge portions of a sheet of fibrous material, as said sheet passes over said table, comprising cutting wheels mounted above and belowthe opposite end portions of the main slot, and corresponding rollers mounted below and above the opposite end portions of the main slot, and in connection with which the cutting wheels operate, said cutting wheels being vertically adjustable.
