This invention relates to label cutting and folding machines.
Labels for apparel and various fabrics andarticles are-frequently stamped on or woven into a tape, which is cut oif in lengths and stitched to the thing to be marked or labeled after a seam has been folded thereon. So far as applicant can'find out up to the present time, this cutting and 'fold-i n operation has only been successfully done by hand and- -is avery tedious'process and aside from that, when completed, is not in'thebest form, being more orless defective.
This invention has'to do withproviding a machine with-a cutting means forcuttin' OK the tape and-- a folding means for fold-ings'eams upon the ends ofthe ta e immediately the same is cut -nth-and to lmproved feed devices which grasp the label, feed it to the cut-off device and pass it on through afold ing device, and effectively creasing the seam partand passing the-same onward and de-' positing it in a suitable receptacle.
From this statement, the general objects of the :invention will appear, and further objects relating to details and economies of construction and operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the mechanism described in the following specification. C dnsidering the numbered parts of the drawin the main frame 1 of the machine is remova 1 supported in the base 2 by means of the ad ustable attaching bolts 4, on which are disposed the knurled thumb nuts 3 suitably shouldered at 5 to fit into corresponding slots 6 in an upwardly-projecting rim on the said base 2. I
The machine is driven by a pulley 7 which is carried on a shaft 8 supported in a suitable journal bearing in the said frame or case 1. The shaft is retained in definite position by suitable collars or otherwise. The feed member 10 embraces an eccentric 11 which is secured to the said shaft 8. The feed member 10 is supported on the shaft 12 and is suitably slotted at 13 so that it plays and oscillates freely back and forth thereon as it is actuated by the eccentric 11, thus insuring the intermittent feed action of a four motion sewing machine feed. The serrated feed plate 9 is carried by the feed member 10 and is adjustably secured in position by clamp screws 14-14, the angle of the same and its proper leveling and adjustment being maintained by the set screws l515. (See particularly Figs. IV and VIII.)
The tooth plate 9 is formed of longitudinal parallel serrated sections 1616 which reciprocate between bars 17, which are formed integral with the center or work plate 18, which serve as a guiding means for said feed. The bars 17 of the work plate support the label as it is being advanced. This work plate is detachably secured in place by screws 19, as clearly appears from Figs. I, III and IV.
The feed member 10 is slotted at 10 to the eccentric and forms an adjustable eccentric ring which is adjusted to properly fit the eccentric 11 by the set screws 20, 21, the set screw 20 adjusting the width of the opening and the set screw 21 clamping the parts securely and rigidly together. See Fig. IX.
An upper bent arm 22, somewhat like the arm of a sewing machine, is secured to the top plate of the frame by a set screw 22. In the front end of this arm is a vertically reciprocating presser bar 23 supported in suitable guldes therein retained by guide plate 24 which guide plate is secured to the arm by a set screw 25.
To the lower end of the presser bar 23, presser foot 26 is secured and eoacts with the feed member 10. It acts very like the presser foot of a sewing machine. This presser foot is pivoted by the transverse screw pivot 27 through a suitable bracket 26 thereon. This presser foot contacts with the upper side of the bars 17, is smooth on its under surface and coacts with the serrated bars of the feed plate 9. The upright presser bar 23 is urged downwardly by means of the blade spring 28 which is secured by screw 29 to the upper side of the arm 22, tension being adjusted by the set 'screw 30. (See particularly Figs. I and II).
Folder guide plates 3131, having upwardly and inwardly curved portions 32, are
secured to the upper side of the plate 18 bv' screws 33, and are disposed at each side of the pressure plates 26 and are in proximity to the said plate at each side and coact therewith. When a label is advanced under the pressure foot by the feed member, the edges of the label are folded upwardly and then as the same is advanced, inwardly by curved portions 32-32. The front part of the plates 31 are merely folded vertically and not inward.
On a suitable shaft 34 are disposed a pair of creaser rolls 35-36 which receive the label from the feed and crease the folded labels. A forwardly-extending guardspring 42 which is secured by a screw 43 to the bracket 26 on the upper side of the plate is provided to insure the delivery of the labels beyond the rolls. The creaser rolls 35, 36 are urged into yielding cont-act with the top of the work plate 18 by yielding journal bearings for the ends of the said shaft 34, the tension of which is adjustable, as will be seen from an examination of Figs II, IV, V and XIII. A yielding journal bearing 38 is properly retained and guided in position by the housing 39, the upper portion of which constitutes a socket 37, into which is inserted a pressure spring 40, the tension of which is adjustable by means of the screw 41.
The shaft 34 which carries the creaser rolls is rotated step by step by means of the ratchet wheel 44 which is acted upon by the pawl tooth 45 carried by the pawl 46, which is supported on an eccentric 47 on the shaft 8. The pawl is held in yielding contact by the spiral spring 48 which connects from the same to the top plate of the case, all of which parts clearly appear in detail in Fig. X, andin position in Figs. II and III from which the said view is taken.
A stationary cutter blade 49 constituting a member of the cut-oil shears, is carried by the adjustable block 50, a clip 51 securing the same in position by means of the set screw 52. This block 50 is provided with a suitable lateral extension, which fits into a suitable transverse seat 55 on the under side of the top plate, and is retained adjustably by set screws 53 which fit through slots 54 therein. as clearly appears in Figs. III
' and VI.
The reciprocating blade 56 of the shears is notched at 56, see Figs. I and VI, and is reciprocated in proximity to the stationary blade 49. The two constitute a pair of screws 59, 60, which are comparab e with the set screws and 21, as illustrated in Fig. IX. The eccentric 58 being adjustable on the shaft 8 is, of course, actuated whenever that shaft is actuated and can be turned to snip off the tape or label strip as the same is fed up step by step, as will be clearly seen by an inspection of Figs. I and VI.
The reciprocating member 57 is guided by the guide block 61, which 'is adjustable in suitable ways on the under side of the case top, see Figs. III and XIII, being secured effectively in place by the set screw 62 in the slot 63 therein. The adjustment is very ef-' fectively secured by the adjusting set screw 64;, which is locked in place by the lock nut 65 whenever the correct adjustment is secured.
An arm 66 secured by screws 67 is provided for carrying the ribbon or label spool, a spindle69 having a head 7 0 being secured to this arm by a set screw 71. The "spool is made up of a body or'barrel 72 with cheek pieces 73-73, a spring washer 73 putting tension upon the same to insure proper feeding of the ribbon. The tape or strip of labels 74 is wound thereon, as clearly appears in Figs. I and XIV, or the spools of tape can be inserted by'removing the spindle. The roll of labels is placed upon this spindle and they are then fed one at a time to the machine. As these are grasped by the'feeding device, they are advanced ste by step forward and the strip, as it is a vanced, is cut off little by little'by the cut-off shears. As 1' the label thus cut off is advanced, the edgesi of the same are turned upwardly by the upwardly-projecting portions of the guide plates 3131, and as the same are advanced to the inturned portions 32-32 when the inner ends are folded over the edges of the pressure foot 26 and ass on under the spring pressed creaser rol s 35-36, which compresses the same very closely, creasing the seam so that the same remains in a compactly folded position, as clearly illustrated in Fig. XV. Thelabels can then be very quickly and readily sewed in place. A box 7 6 held by hooks 77 (see Fig. VI), is provided to receive the folded labels.
I have thus described my improved label cutting and folding machine very minutely. I desire to state that the same can be greatly varied in details without departing from my invention. I know from experience that the same can be successfully operated without the creaser rolls 3536, but the creaser rolls are ofvery great advantage in securing the effective creasing of the seams. The cut-oft shears can, of course, be very effectively used without the remaining. features for cutting off the labels at exactly the right length and doing the same effectively. The folding and creasing device could be used independent of the cutting off. device,,,-but all the devices co'tiperate very effectively togetherandare so associated that each codperates withthe other, constituting a complete unitary structure.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1.. In a label cutting and folding machine, the combination of a suitable frame; a shaft with suitable driving means; an oscillating feed member; an actuating eccentric on said shaft for actuating the same to secure a step-by-stepfour-motion feed movement; a
feed plate of parallel serrated bars adjust-" guards extending from said pressure shoe tosaid creaser rolls; a cut-off shear consisting of stationary blade and a reciprocating blade cofipera'ting therewith; suitable means cooperating with said feed for actuating said shears; and folder'plates at each side of the pressure shoe to receive and fold the. labels that are'cut ofl and advanced by the said feed device onward to the creaser'rolls-forcreasing the same, coacting forthe purpose specified.
2. In a label cutting and folding machine, the combination of a suitable frame; a shaft with suitable driving means; an oscillating feed member; an actuating eccentric on said shaft for actuating the same to secure stepby-step four-motion feed movement; a feed plate of parallel serrated bars adjustably supported on said feed member; arwork plate with suitable central guide bars intermeshing with the toothed bars of said feed plate; a vertical pressure bar; a spring for urging the same downwardly; a. pressure shoe pivoted to said pressure bar coiiperating with the said feed member; a pair of spring pressed creaser rollsdisposed at the end of said pressure plates for creasing said labels; means for actuating said creaser rolls; a cutoff shear consisting of stationary blade and a reciprocating blade cotiperating therewith; suitable means cotiperating with said feed for actuating said shears; and folder plates at each side of the pressure shoe to receive and fold the labels that are cut off and ad vanoed by the said feed device onward to the creaser rolls for creasing the same, coacting for the purpose specified.
3. In a label cutting and folding machine, the combination of a suitable frame; a shaft with suitable driving means; an oscillating feed member; an actuating eccentric on said shaft for actuating the same to secure stepby-step four-motion feed movement; a work plate with suitable central guide bars intermeshing with the toothed bars of said feed plate; a vertical pressure bar; an adjustable spring for urging the same down wardly; a pressure shoe pivoted to said pressure bar coiiperating with the said feed member; a pair of spring pressed creaser rolls disposed at the end of said pressure plates for creasing said labels; means for actuating said creaser rolls; a cut-off shear consisting of stationary blade and a reciprocating blade cotiperating therewith; suitable means cooperating with said feed for actuating said shears; and folder plates at each side of the pressure shoe to receive and fold the labels that are cut off and advanced by the said feed device onward to the creaser rolls for creasing the same, coacting for the purpose specified. 5. In a label cutting and folding machine, the combination of a suitable frame; a shaft with suitable driving means; an oscillating feed member; an actuating eccentric on said shaft for actuating the same to secure stepby-step four-motion feed movement; a feed plate of parallel serrated bars adjustably supported on said feed member; a work mosaic plate with suitable central guide bars intermeshing with the toothed bars of said feed plate; a vertical pressure bar; a spring for urging the same downwardly; a pressure shoe pivoted to said pressure bar cooperating with the said feed member; a pair of spring pressed'creaser rolls disposed at the end of said pressure plates for creasing said labels; means for actuating said creaser rolls; a cutoff shear consisting of stationary blade and a reciprocating blade cotiperating therewith; a suitable oscillating member for carrying said reciprocating blade; an eccentric on said shaft for actuating the said reciprocating blade; and folder plates at each side of the pressure shoe to receive and fold the labels that are cut off and advanced by the said feed device onward to the creaser rolls for creasing the same, coacting for the purpose specified. In a label cutting and folding machine, the combination of a suitable frame; a shaft with suitable driving means; an oscillating feed member; an actuating eccentric on said shaft for actuating the same to secure stepby-step four-motion feed movement; a feed plate of parallel serrated bars adjustablv supported on said feed member; a work plate with suitable central guide bars intermeshing with the toothed bars of said feed plate; a pressure shoe cotiperating with the said feed member; a pair of spring presser creaser rolls disposed at the end of said pressure plates for creasing said labels; means for actuating said creaser rolls; a cut-off shear consisting of stationary blade and a reciprocating blade coiiperating therewith; suitable means cotiperating with said feed for actuating said shears; and folder plates at each side of the pressure shoe to receive and fold the labels that are cut off and advanced by the said feed device onward to the creaser rolls for creasing the same, coacting for the purpose specified.
7 In a labelcutting and folding machine, the combination of a suitable frame; a shaft with suitable driving means; an oscillating feed member; an actuating eccentric on said shaft for actuating the same to secure stepby-step four-motion feed movement; a feed plate of parallel serrated bars adjustably supported on said. feed member; a work plate with suitable central guide bars intermeshing with the toothed bars of said feed plate; a pressure shoe cotiperating with the said feed member; a cut-off shear consisting of stationary blade and a reciprocating blade cotiperating therewith; suitable means cooperating with said feed for actuating said shears; and folder plates at each side of the pressure shoe to receive and fold the labels that are out OK, coacting for the purpose specified.
8. In a label cutting and folding machine, the combinationof a suitable frame; a shaft with suitable driving means; an oscillating feed member; an actuating eccentric on said shaft for actuating the same to secure stepby-step four-motion feed movement; a feed plate of parallel serrated bars adjustably supported on said feed member; a work plate with suitable central guide bars intermeshing with the serrated bars ofsaid feed plate; a pressure shoe cooperating with the said feed member; a cut-off shear co6perating with said feed; and folder plates at each side of the pressure shoe to receive and fold the labels that are cut off, coacting for the purpose specified.
9. In a label cutting and folding machine,
7 the combination of a suitable frame or cars mg; a feeding device wit-h an oscillating member; a pressure plate or shoe cooperating therewith; creaser rolls; means for actuating said creaser rolls; a cut-off means; and folder plates at eachside of the pressure plate or shoe to receive thelabels that are cut 05 and advanced by the said feed device onward to the creaser rolls for creasing the seams therein, coacting for the purpose specified.
10. In a label cutting and folding machine, the combination of a suitable frame or casing; a cut-off means; a feeding device with an oscillating member to advance the label laterally after it has beencut ofi' a pressure plate or shoe cooperating with said feeding device; folder means at each side of the pres sure plate or shoe and feeding devices to receive and fold the cut off edges of the labels that are cut off and advanced by the said feed device, and creaser rolls coacting for the purpose specified.
11. In a label cutting and folding machine, the combination of a suitable frame or casing; a feeding device with an oscillating member; a pressure plate or shoe cooperating therewith; creaser rolls; means for actuatmg said creaser rolls comprising a ratchet wheel for advancing said creaser rolls; a ratchet pawl for actin on said ratchet wheel; an eccentric on said s aft for actuating said pawl; a cut-off means; and folderplates at each side of'the pressure plate or shoe to re ceive the labels that are cut off and advanced by the said feed device onward to the creaser rolls for creasing the seams the-rein, coacting for the purpose specified.
12. In a label cutting and folding machine, the combination, of a suitable frame or casing; a reciprocating feed device; a pressure plate or shoe cooperating therewith; creaser rolls; a cut-off device consisting of a pair of shears comprising a stationary blade suitably adjustable and a. reciprocating blade cooperating with said stationary blade; a suitable oscillating member for carrying said reciprocating blade; an eccentric on said shaft for actuating the said reciprocating blade; and folder plates at each side of the pressure plate or shoe to receive the labels that are cut off and advanced by the said feed device, coacting for the purpose specified.
13. In a label cutting and folding machine,
the combination of a suitable frame or casing; a cut-off means; reciprocating feed devices disposed for advancing the cut off label laterally; folder devices cooperating with the said feed devices to fold the cut off edges and creaser rolls for receiving and creasing a label, as specified.
14. In a label cutting and folding machine, the combination of a suitable frame or casing; a cut-off means; reciprocating feed devices disposed for advancing the cut off label laterally; folder devices cooperating with the said feed devices to fold the cut ofi. edges; creaser rolls for receiving and creasing a label; a ratchet wheel for advancing said creaser rolls; a ratchet pawl for acting on said ratchet wheel; and an eccentric on said shaft for actuating said pawl, as specified.
