Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, NORMAN H. BEEBE and Gnoncn WV. DUVALL, citizens of the United States, residing at Wichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, and Davenport, county of, Scott, and State of Iowa, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom Banding Machines, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to an improvement in machines used to compress metal bands on the fiber or brush portions of brooms.
The objects sought are a simple, compact, and efficient mechanism for compressing these bands and completing the broom.
l/Vith these objects in view, our invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a view in front elevation showing the machine from the operators side, Fig. 2 is a view in side elvation, Fig. 3 shows a metal band before and after compression, Fig. 4: illustrates the band around the brush or fiber of a broom before being compressed by the machine, and Fig. 5 illustrates the broom after the broom has been through the machine and the bands have been compressed.
The numeral 1 shows the main frame of the machine, and the bearing 1 at the top is a part of this main frame.
The numeral 2 is the belt wheel made heavy to act as a balance wheel. This wheel is attached to the hub 3 of the pinion 4;. Pinion 4: and its hub 3, together with the wheel 2, revolve on the stationary shaft 5. This shaft is secured to bracket 6, which in turn is attached to the main frame 1. Pinion 1 meshes with and imparts motion to the gear-wheel 7. Wheel 7 revolves freely on shaft 8. The hub of the wheel 7 is formed into one-half of a ratchet clutch, as'shown. Member 9 forms the other half of the ratchet clutch. This member 9 slides longitudinally upon the shaft 8, causing the shaft to revolve through the medium of the key 10. The member 9 is provided with a circumferential groove B. The bell-crank 11 is provided with pins 12, 12, which extend into the groove B. The springs 13 (one on either side) draw the member 9 forward to the position shown in Fig. 2. To slide the member 9 into mesh withthe hub of wheel 7, a clownward pressure is applied toYfoot-treadle 1 k, and the downward movement of treadle 14L is communicated to bell-crank 11 bv means of the rod 15.
Connected to the forward end of the shaft 8 is an eccentric-rod 18.v The lower end of the rod 18 journals around a pin 19, which pin is held bythe hollow box-like projection madea part of cross-head 20. By means of the eocentriclG on shaft 8, strap 17,:androd 18, vertically reciprocating motion is imparted to the cross-head 20, which cross-head slides in grooves provided on the inner faces of the guides 21 and 22. Attached to the lower end of cross-head 20 is the form 23. This form is provided with as many grooves as it is desired to press bands on the broom.
The form 24.- is attached to the top of the inverted U-shaped yoke 25. This yoke slides in a vertical plane on the extension .40 of the main frame 1, shown by the dotted lines, where it is retained by a plate &1. The yoke 25 is attached to the yoke-plate 26. Between the plate 26 and the tension plate 27 is the compression spring 28. This spring is held under any desired tension by means of the bolts 29 and 30, which have nuts 35 and 36 respectively on their lower ends for that purpose. The threaded adjusting wheel 31 operates on the adjusting screw32. This screw is provided with a head, and passes through a hole in the forward extension 40 of the main frame (shown in dotted lines), where it is suspended by the head as shown by the dotted lines. It will be seen that form 2%, yoke 25, spring 28, plate 27 bolts 29 and 30 are all raised and lowered vertically by means of the adjusting wheel 31 without disturbing the tension of spring 28.
The operation of the machine is as follows z-The bands are placed around the broom as shown in Fig. 4:. The broom is then held between the forms 23 and 24 so as to bring each band in the opposed grooves of the form. The operator now presses down the treadle 14:, thus sliding the members of the clutch in mesh. As the wheel 7 is constantly revolving, shaft 8 together with eccentric 16 will revolve, causing the rod 18, cross-head 20, and form 23 to api'proah 'form "24, thus pressing the bands ti'ghtly on the fiber, as shown in Fig. 5. An over-pressure is prevented by the spring 28.
The vertical adjustment enables the ma 7 chine to press the bands on large and small brooms. 'Iheoperator holds the treadle down until the machine makes one revolution. He then removes his foot from the treadle, and the spring 13 disengages the said arm of the frame, two plates through which the screw extends, one of which plates is secured to the yoke, a spring surrounding the screw and interposed between the plates, a nuton the screw for raising and lowering the form carried by the yoke to adjust it with respect to the other form and the size of the broom to be made, andmeans inde pendent of the nut and screw for varying the tension of the spring.
