To all whom tt may conccrn Be it known that I, FRANK M. TILLoU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bayonne, in the county of Hudson and State ot New Jersey, have invented new and useful lmprovements in Automatic Pool and Billiard Cue Chalkers, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to billiard and pool cue chalkers, and more particularly to the class of automatic cue chalkers.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein the chalking cube will be held so as to obviate the chipping or breaking of the cube when the same is being used for the chalking of a cue for use in playing billiards or pool.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a devce of this character wherein the chalking cube will be actuated so as to apply the chalk to the tip of the cue without necessitating the turning of the cue or the manipulation thereoi' by the hand as usual.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a chalking device of this character which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose, strong and durable, and inexpensive in manufacture. I

`With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the Construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.

In the drawingsz-Figure l is a side elevation of an automatic chalking device constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional View thereof. Fig. 3 is an end elevation.

Reerring to the drawings by numerals, the automatic chalking device comprises a cylindrcal body 5 forming a handle provided with a slightly reduced closed end 6 in which is swiveled an eye or other suitable coupling member 7 for 'the connection of the handle with a suspension cord, whereby it may be hung over a billiard or pool table in convenient reach of the players of a game of billiards or pool. Spaced from the outer end of the plunger l2 and integrally fol-med therewit-h is an annular fiange 15, while surrounding the said stem 12 between the shoulder lO and the fiange 15 is a coiled compression spring 16 which has its bearings against the said shoulder and fiange and is adapted to act upon the plunger 12 for normally projecting the cube 14: exteriorly of the handle.

Telescoped upon and suitably secured to the outer end of the plunger 12 and abuttng against the fiange 15 is a resilient sleeve 17 which surrounds the cube lt, and in this manner the latter is held upon the plunger so that the chalk can be readily applied to the tip of the cue when the cue is engaged with the chalk 14-, it being seen that by depressing the cube 14: by exerting pressure upon the cube the plunger will be forced inwardly within the handle 5 and at the same time it will be rotated, ther-eloy automatically applying chalk to the tip of the cue by spreading a thin surface of the chalk upon the same. The resilient sleeve 17 enables the firm gripping of the chalk l l and also the fastening of the same in alinement with the outer end of the plunger 12, the sleeve being telescoped over the outer end of the plunger 12 as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. the sleeve is of slightly less diameter than the bore in the casing or cylindrical body 5 so as to avoid undue friction between the sleeve and the inner surface of the bore of the cylindrical body during the rotation of the plunger therein. The handle 5 can be held within the hand of the user so that it can be forced in the desired direction when the chalk 14: is in contact with the tip of the cue to cause the rotation of the plunger 12 and therebv properly apply the chalk to the tip of the said cue.
