To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. Monsn, a citizen of the United States, residing at orcester, in the county of Worcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wire-Drawing Machines, of which the fol lowing is a specification, accompanied by drawings,v forming a part of the same, in which Figure 1 represents a side view of a wire drawing machine, shown partly in section, and embodying my present improvement, and Figs. 2, 3 and 4 show detached and partial views of the mechanism for stopping the rotation of the wire drawing block upon the breaking of the wire which .is being drawn, shown in different positions in the different views.

The object of my present invention is to provide a simple and eiiicient' means for stopping the rotation of the wire drawing block whenever, for any'reason, the strain exerted by the wire upon the die holder is relieved, and I accomplish this object by the construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described and pointed out in the annexed claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a supporting tableor bench upon which a rotatable wire drawing block 2 is mounted. The block 2 is provided on its under side with a clutch member'3 adapted to engage a corresponding clutch member carried by a vertical rotating shaft 5. A rocking yoke 6 pivotally supported at 7 carries friction rolls 8 adapted to be raised by a suitable lifting mechanism into the position indicated by the broken line 9, thereby lifting the wire drawing block sufficiently to disengage its clutch member from the driving clutch member 'When the rolls. 8 are depressed, the wire drawing block and clutch member 3 .fall by gravity, bringing the clutch member: into engagement and imparting a rotative movement to the wire drawing block. .In the present instance the yoke 6 is rocked by means of an arm 10 pivotally connected by a link 11 with an ,arm 12 carried on a rocking shaft 13 journaled in the framework of the machine, and carrying on its outer end a foot treadle having arms 1a and 15, Fig. 1. The link 11 and arm 12 form a toggle-jointconnection between the rocking shaft 13 and the arm 10 projecting from the yoke 6. By depressing the arm 15 of the foot treadle, the parts of the togglejoint are brought into the position shown in Fig. 1 which brings the rolls 8 into their lowest position, allowing the clutch members 3 and 4. to engage each other, thereby connecting the rotatable wire drawing block 2 with the driving power. When the arm 1 1 of the foot treadle is depressed, the shaft 13 is rocked, bringing the link 11 and arm 12 into the position shown inFig. 3, thereby depressing the arm 10 and disengaging the clutch members 3 and t. The rocking of the shaft 13 in one direction serves to engage the rotatable block 2 with the drivingpower, while the reverse move ment disengages the rotatable block 2 from the driving power.
it is the object of my present invention to provide means for automatically aocomplishing the reverse movement of the rocking shaft 13 and consequent disengagement of the clutch members 3 and l whenever, for any cause, the strain exerted upon the die holder is' relieved as, for example, by .the breaking of the wire between the rotatable block 2 and the die holder. 1 accomplish this result by pivotally connecting the die holder 16 with the table 1 by means of a vertical rod 17, supported at the lower end in a bearing formed in a bracket 18 and passing upward through the table 1 with its upper end held in a bracket 19. Between the bracket 19 and table 1 the rod 17 passes 16 is pivotally attached by a'pin 21.
Attached to the rod 17 is a collar 22 to receive the thrust of a spiral spring interposed between the collar 22 and the under side of the table 1, serving to normally hold the rod 17 with. the collar 22 bearing against The hole 2% in the bracket 19 and the hole 25. in the plate 20 are larger '1' than the r0d'2-17 to permit the free sliding shoulder 26; Attached to the rocking shaft' 13 is a plate 30 provided with an upwardly projecting arm 31 and also with a pivoted lever 32. Projecting from the under side of the plate 30 is a short arm 33, for the purpose of engaging and tripping the spring actuated latch 27,.as hereinafter described. The arm 31 and the pivoted lever 32 are arranged in the plane of the sliding rod 17 so as to be moved beneath the lower end of the rod as the shaft 13 is rocked.
When the wire drawing machine is out of operation, the toggle-joint mechanism for operating the;clutch members is in the position shown in Fig. 3'. 1% strain is then being applied to the .die holder 16, and the rod 17 is held in its lowest position by the tension of the spiral spring 23 aided by the weight of the rod. In this position of the mechanism the upper end of the lever 32 is bringing the beneath the lower end of the rod 17, as shown in Fig. 3. In bringing the rotating wire drawing block 2-into operativeconnecion with the driving power, ressure is aplied to the foot treadle in or er to rock the liaft- 13 in the direction of the arrow 34., ivoted lever 32 against the lower end of t e rod 17 The rocking movement of the shaft 13 raises the rod 17 by its contact with the lever 32 into the position shown in F ig. 4, allowin the spring actuated latch 27 to engage t e shoulder 26 on the rod 17 and hold it in its elevated position, as shown in Fig. 4. The continued rocking movement of the shaft 13 in the direction of the arrow 34 carries the pivoted lever 32 away from the rod 17, and brings the arm 31 directly beneath the rod 17 in the position shown in Fig. 2. The further --movement of the rocking shaft 13 in the direction of the arrow 34 carries the arm 31 nearer the rod 17 into the position shown in Fig. 1, and moves the arm 33 against the lower end of the spring actuated latch 27-to rock the latter and carry it out of engagement with the shoulder 26, thereby releasing the rod 17, as shown in Fig. 1.
Prior to the last position assumed by the mechanism, as shown in Fig. 1, the clutching mechanism of the wire drawing block has been brought into engagement and, in case a strand of wire passing through the die held in the die holder 16 is engaged by a .gripping mechanism 35, Fig. 1, the operation of winding the wireupon the rotating block will have begun, and the tensile strain exfrictional contact with the bracket 19 and plate 20. In case the wire becomes broken between the die holder 16 and the wire drawing block 2, or the tensile strain from any cause becomes relieved. the friction upon the rod 17 will be so reduced as to enable the rod to be forcibly moved downward by its own.

This movement of the toggle-joint arrangement past its centers enables the spring 38 to depress the arm 10 and rock the yoke 6 to raise the rolls 8 and lift the clutch member 3 out of engagement with the clutch member 4, thereby stopping the rotation of the wire drawing block 2.

A wire drawing machine comprising a wire drawing block, a die holder and die through which the wire isdrawn, a pivot for said die holder movable transversely to the line of movement of said wire-whenever" the strain upon the die holder is relieved, means for rotating said block, and means for disconnecting said block from said gitudinal movement by, its frictional engagement with said die holder due to the tensile strain upon the wire, and means for disengaging said clutching mechanism by the longitudinal movement of saidrod. y
5. A wire drawing machine, comprising a wire drawing block, a rotating shaft, a
clutch member arranged to connect ,said
block and said shaft, means arranged to operate said clutch connection, a die holder and die through which the wire is drawn by the rotation of said block, a movable pivot for said die holder held from longitudinal movement by frictional contact with said die holder while the wire isv being drawn, and connecting means between said pivot and said clutch operating means arranged to cause said clutch operating means to disconnect said clutch when the pivot moves longitudinally.
6. A Wire drawing machine, comprising a wire drawing block, means for rotating said block, means for connecting said block with said means of rotation, a die holder and die through which the wire is drawn by the rotation of said block, a slidable pivot for said die holder held from movement by the tensile strain of the wire, means for movingsaid slidable pivot in one direction by the operation of said connecting means in connecting said block, said pivot movable in the opposite direction when said tensile strain is relieved, thereby reversing the operation of said connecting means and disconnecting said block. j
7 A wire drawing machine comprising a wire drawing block, means for rotating said block, means for connecting said block with said means of rotation, a die holder and die through which the wire is drawn by the rotation of said block, a slidable pivot for said die holder held from movement by the tensile strain of the wire,means for moving said pivot in one direction by the operation of said connecting means, and automatic means for moving said pivot in the opposite direction to reverse the operation of said connecting means and disconnect said block whenever the strain-on said die holder is relieved.
