To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDno V. BATES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lowell, in the county of Middlcsex and State of li'llassachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Breasts for Carding-lllachines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to carding machines especially to those used in the handling of wool fibers.
It is substantially an attachment for carding machines which takes the stock before it is well started on the main cylinder and breaks up the lumps, mixes and straightens the stock and saves wear and tear on the card clothing in various ways and'especially by preventing lumps onthe main cylinder which lumps have a tendency to wear out the card clothing in spots. If such lumps get on to the main cylinder, they are forced well into the teeth thereof and although the workers pick off small quantities, the lumps are not entirely destroyed but are finally removed with the web by the fancy and (letter and make uneven work. My device breaks up and destroys these lumps before they reach the main cylinder anddeli-vers to it a thin, even, unbroken web. My device also thoroughly mixes the stock and helps to straighten the fibers before they reach the main cylinder. It permits the speed to be increased thus increasing the production and helps to produce a better and stronger yarn with less waste. This attachment may be placed upon any card either the first breaker,
second breaker, intermediate or finisher.
My device can be placed upon a card of any usual construction with very slight changes therein and without occupying any additionalfloor space.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a carding machine with my attachment.
H is the main cylinder, 10, 10 are the workers, 12 is the fancy and 13 is the doffer all of the usual construction. lhe feeding-in rolls K and L and the licker-in E are also of the usual construction except that the teeth of the licker-in are reversed and it travels in the opposite direction to what is customary thereby taking the stock S and carrying it downward underneath and then up instead of over and down as is customary.

Instead of being; in contact with each other, I separate the licker-in E from the tumbler l3 and over them in engagement with both, I locate what I will call a breast cylinder D. This breast cylinder is preferably somewhat largerthan the workers but considerably smaller than the main cylinder. It rotates in the same direction with the main cylinder and its teeth pitch in the same direction with those on the main cylinder. This breast cylinder D is in carding proximity toworker C and I use in connec- -tron therewith, an additional worker A, the
teeth of which pitch in the same direction with worker C but which rotates in the op posits direction. "Worker A and breast cylinder D are in carding proximity. I also use a stripper or transfer roll B whose teeth pitch in a direction opposite to those of workers A and C and which rotates in the A, breast D, and worker C.
In regard to speed, workers A and C have about the same surface speed which is slower than that of breast D or main cylinder H. I Stripper or transfer roll B has a surface speed faster than workers A or C but slower than breast D.
Breast D hasa surface speed faster than licker-in E or workers A or C or stripper B. Tumbler F has a surface speed faster than breast D but slower than main cylinder H.

stock is delivered by feeding-in rolls K and L to licker-in E by which it is carried around and delivered to breast D by which worker A and breast D and part of it 20 is carried around by worker A and stripped therefrom by stripper B being carried along thereby and returned to breast D by which the stock is still carried along and is carded again by worker C, some 21 being carried along thereby and carded by main cylinder H and some 22 being still carried by worker G and" stripped therefrom by stripper Band with the stock 20' returned. by it again to breast D where the process is repeated. Another part of the stock 23 after being carded by worker A is again carded by the worker O andthe main cylinder H and-part 24 is carried along by breast, D and is stripped therefrom by tumbler l3" and deposited on the main cylinder H asshown.
It will be seen that there are carding points between A and D, G. and D, and C and H andas the arrangement is a reworking one, the stock is repeatedly worked between A, B, G and Dcuntil it is in "such shapeas to be finally carried along by the main cylinder H to the other workers 10. It is carded by these, strippedtherefrom by strippers 11 and finally taken from main cylinder H by the actionof fancy l2 and doffer 13 as is customary or by any other means. i

I claim: i 1. In a carding machine, a main cylinder,
a first worker, a tumbler, a licker-in adjoining but separated from :the tumbler, and
feeding-in rolls in engagement.with the lickerin, combinedwith a breast cylinder which engages the first worker, the licker-in and the tumbler, an additional worker in carding proximity with the breast cylinder, and a stripper in operative relationwit-h the first worker, thebreast andthe additional worker.
2. In a carding machine, a main cylinder, a first worker, a tumbler, a licker inadj oining but separated fromythe tumbler, and feeding-in rolls inv engagement with the licker-in, combined with abreast cylinder which engages the first worker, the licker-in and the tumbler, an additional worker in carding proximity with the breast cylinder,
