To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EMIL 'BARTI-IELMESS, a subject of the German Emperor, and residing at Neuss, Rhenish Prussia, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pulverizing- Mills, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in ulverizing mills and more particularly in mills of that class in which the material to be pulverized is passed between a revolving crushing ring and one or more resilient crushing rollers located inside the ring. An example of such a machine is shown and described in my Patent No. 1,068,096, for grinding or reducing apparatus.
One of the objects of the improvements is to provide a machine of this class in which the pressure exerted by the resilient members on the bearings of the roller or rollers is the same at both sides.
l/Vith this object in v1ew my invention consists in providing an equalizing device between the springs or systems of springs provided at both sides of the roller or rollers. Where it is desired to equip the springs with adjusting means for regulating their tension I prefer to provide double adjusting means. In the preferred form one of the adjusting means is connected with the equalizing device.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists-of the matters to be described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification.

The same letters of reference have been used in both views to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the example illustrated in the drawings, the general construction of the machine is the same as that described in my aforesaid patent. As shown the operative parts of the machine are inclosed within a casing G of substantially cylindrical shape which is mounted on a suitable foundation or other support. 'At both sides of the casing bearings L, L are located which are either made integral with the casing or rigidly secured thereto, and in the said bearings a shaft A is supported which carries a driving roller V and a belt pulley It. The driving roller is in engagement with a crushing ring M which is mounted for revolution within the casing G and is spaced from the side walls of the latter by means of rings Y located at both sides of the casing. Inside the crushing ring two crushing rollers IV and "W are located which are respectively keyed to shafts A and A supported in suitable bearings L and L. The bearings L and L are resiliently mounted on coiled springs F F and F for which purpose they are formed with lugs V", V and V V As shown the spring I is located between both bearings L and L and the spring F bears on a lug X of the casing G by means of a rod Z formed at its upper end with a head Z bearing on the upper end of the spring F through the intermediary of a washer I] At its lower end the rod passes through a bore of the lug means of screw nuts K serving to ad ust the tension of spring F Through the spring F there extends a rod Z which at its upper end is provided with a head and with a washer U and at its lower end is jointed to an armof a bell crank lever w pivotally mounted on a suitable lug e0 of the case G. The other arm of the bell crank lever is connected by means of a rod II with a similar bell crank lever (not, shown) to which the system of springs located at the opposite side of the rollers is connected. The rod II passes through a bore of the bell crank lever w and it is held in place by means of the screw nut Z. By more or less tightening the said screw nut the tension of the springs is adjusted. From the description of the springs it will readily be understood, that the tension of the springs on opposite sides of the rollers must be the same by reason of their connection by means of the rod H.
In the preferred form shown in the drawings the casing G inclosing the operative parts is so constructed as to permit a ready removal of the crushing ring and the rollers. For this purpose it is divided intoa main or lower section, to which the letter G has been applied, and into an upper section B constructed in the form of a hood or lid. - In order to protect the bearings L L and L against injury by the dust escaping from the casing G, I provide the shaft A A and A with flanges Z) cooperating with flanges 12* formed on the wall of the drum, or as shown on the covers D D which flanges provide an annular chamber receiving the flanges b.
The material to be pulverized is supplied to the crushing ring and rollers at opposite sides of. the casing having two branches E. Within the passage S a spreader t is located which is formed with two discharges one for each of the branches E. Below the discharges two chutes 7', 1' are located which are pivotall mounted within the passage S at W. At their inner ends the said chutes are engaged by the head a of a screw 8 projecting downward through the wall of the passage S. By means of a hand wheel Z: the said screw can be vertically adjusted, and by such adjustment the chutes r are set in a more or less inclined position, so as to admit a larger or less amount of the material to be ground to the crushing ring. From the passage S the material flows downward to the crushing apparatus through thebranche E provided at opposite sides of the case G.
I claim herein'as my invention:
1. In a pulverizing machine, the combination with a crushing ring, and means to rotate the same of at least one crushing roller, means provied at each side of said roller to hold the same in engagement with the ring, said means comprising at each side of the roller a plurality of yielding members arranged at an angle to each other and lying in the same vertical plane, and means connecting said yielding members and arranged to equalize the force exerted thereby.

In a pulverizing machine, the combination with a crushing ring, a driving roller engaging said ring, means to rotate said driving roller, and fixed bearings for said driving roller, of two crushing rollers, means provided at each side of the rollers to hold the same in contact with the crushing ring, said means comprising an equalizing rod, a pair of bell crank levers carrying said rod, at each side of the rollers a spring connecting said rollers with each other, and two springs one for each of the rollers and arranged at an angle to said connecting spring and respectively connected with one end to said rollers and arranged at an angle to said connecting spring and respectively connected with one end to said rollers and with the opposite end respectively to a relatively fixed part and to said bell crank levers.
9. In a pulverizing machine, the combination with a crushing ring, a driving roller engaging said ring, means to rotate said driving roller, and fixed bearings for said driving roller, of two crushing rollers, means provided at each side of the rollers to hold the same in contact with the crushing ring, said means comprising an equalizing rod, a pair of bell crank levers carrying said rod, at each side of the rollers a spring connecting said rollers with each other, two springs one for each of the rollers and arranged at Copies of this patent may be obtained for an angle to said connecting spring and respectively connected with one end to said rollers and with the opposite end respectively to a relatively fixed part and to said bell crank levers, and means to adjust the active length of said equalizing rod.

In a pulverizing machine, the combination with a crushing ring, a driving roller engaging the same, rotating means for the driving roller, and at least one crushing roller, of a casing inclosing said crushing ring, driving roller and crushing roller and divided along a line passing substantially through the axis of said driving roller, the opening at the line of division between the sections of the casing being suliicient to permit the passage of the crushing ring therethrough.
12. In a pulverizing machine, the combination with a crushing ring, a driving roller engaging the same, rotating means for the driving roller, and at least one crushing roller, of a casing inclosing said crushing ring, driving roller and crushing roller, and divided along the line passing substantially through the axis of said driving roller, the lower section of said casing being formed at its line of division with the lower section of a bearing for the driving roller, and the opening at the line of division between the sections of the casing being sufiicient to permit the passage of the crushing ring therethrough.
