ROBERT F. R. HUNTSMAN, OF PLAINFIELD, NEW' JERSEY.
DEVICE FOR MAKING SMOKE RINGS.
Application led January 10, 1913.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT F. R. HUNTs- MAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Plainfield, county of Union, and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Device for Making Smoke Rings, of which the following 1s a specification.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide. an envelop, preferably a box which may be used as a holder for cigars or cigarettes, and which when empty may be used as a device or toy for making smoke rings.
Other objects will appear from the hereinafter description,
Certain embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, and in which the same reference character indicates the same part in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box formed of an open end structure covered by a sliding drop or container itting in the same; Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional View of the same, showing the box used as a receptacle for cigars or cigarettes; Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view showing the box as used for a smoke-making device; Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view of a modified form of the same; Fig. 5 is a crosssectional view of another modification; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of an embodiment of a simpler form of construction of the in vention; and Fig. 7 is a cross-sectional view of Fig. 6.
The part marked A on the drawings represents the outside or cover of the box, preferably rectangular in form and open at both ends, 20 and 2l, to receive the slidable holder or container, B, within which cigars or cigarettes, C, may be carried. The container B is preferably made of a single piece of material, cut and folded to form part of the front, 30, one end 31, the back 32, the other end 33, front flap 34;, and the two sides. The part marked 30 and the flap 34 form the front of the sliding container, and their meeting edges are about half way longitudinally of the box. The edges 37 and 38 of this container are scored or creased, so that when the container is partly withdrawn from the cover A, the flap 34 may be easily turned up to remove the contents of the container.
On the front 22 of the cover is a repre- Speccaton of Letters Patent.

sentation, 24, of the face of an individual, the mouth 25 of which is shown open. The front 22 of this cover is provided with an opening, 26, which registers with the openmouth of the front face of the cover. The front part 30 of the slidable container is perforated at 39, and it is so located that when the sliding container is within the cover, said perforation is out of register with the opening 26 in the front of the cover, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings; but when the said container is-partly withdrawn, the said perforation 39 -corresponds with and registers with the opening 26 in the cover of the box.
The object of placing the opening 39 out of register with the opening 26 in the box as used as a receptacle for cigars, is to prevent the cigars from becoming dry; but when the cover is partly withdrawn, the openings register as shown in Fig. 3, so that it. may be used for projecting smoke rings.
In Fig. 4; I have shown a construction in which the openings register when the sliding container is pushed in to its fullest extent in the cover. In this case I may provide the upper edge of the part 30 with a iiap 4:0, which folds over the opening 39, and covers the same, so that the moisture in the cigars or cigarettes will not evaporate and ause the said cigars or cigarettes to become In some cases, where the openings 26 and 39 register when the slide is in the cover, one of said openings may be covered by a thin piece of paper, 50. I have shown the opening 39 as so covered in Fig. 5 of the draw- In Figs. 6 and 7 I have shown a simpler construction, which consists of the box B and the cover B, said cover being provided with an opening 70, covered by a piece of' paper 71. The front of this cover has the representation of a face thereon, as in the preceding described construction. In some cases, instead of providing the opening in the cover or the receptacle, and covering the same with a piece of paper, I may make the outline of the opening or openings formed by marking or scoring` through the cover or the slide, and the opening may be made by cutting or punching out the indicated part when the box is embodied to use it as a smoke-making and projecting device.
To use the receptacle shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, a'ismolelnialring; and projecting device, the empty receptacle is partly withdrawn from the cover, so that the openings 26 and 39" 'willi register- Then the smoke from a cigar is blown into the receptacle through these registering openings, then by tapping thel box gently on the back` the rings will" be formed and projected as shown in Fig. 8.
WV hen the construction shown in Fig.' 4;
isaiseclbtlie'flapllOis simply raisedito uncover thelopening when the smoke is blown intothe box, and is tapped on thebacl to produce'the rings.- i
In the other figures, the piece ofpaper orA listornffroin'the opening, or the scored partfpunched out,.when the smoke can be blown intof the holder and projected in rings" by tapping on the back. The box or receptacle is preferably made of cardboard on heavy paper, althouglilany suitable inaterial may be usedg-but whatever material isnsed, it ispreferable, thoughinoti.` necessai'y,-that theba-.clr` ofy thebox be slightly flexible; and when I have used the' terinfbox or receptacle', it isintendedany suitablei box, on evenl a paper itself inayi be usedv for this purpose. v
It is alsovtofbe.understood, that the area of" theY opening is prefe-rablv considerably lessl-.tlianlthe yarca of the front-'of thev box; y,
ln" additioni to.v` the.` invention being.` de# scribed` asfherein set forth,- as areceptacle fori cigars, and when empty to be used asa toy for makin g sni'olre'rings, -v it` is apparent that it may be usedv as'` an advertising scheinen Hav-ingfnow described iny invention; what Lclaiin-asneuo and desire toy secureby Let-v ters Patentis:
