Letters Patent. pge w gii 11 1 j nomination filed September 2'7, r5513. fierlal He.'792,078.
i'lnirranne and thiamine lioiizawnnii, sul
v jects of the King of the United Kingdom of 5 Great l I speeti eiy, at hlorton li'ouse. llornhy Road, 1h Old liraiiord, hianrhester, in the county of *Laneasrer, England, and Linotype and Maaod lreland, and residing, ro-
eliineralvorloi, lh'oadiiealh, in the county of Chester, England, have invented new and useful Lnproveh ents in 'lype liars or Slugs,
of which the following is a sperification.
'lhis imientioh relates to typographiral line-rustingniaehines. and to the devices 1L known, and hereinafter referred to, as-
slugzs east therein, whirli near on one edge a line of printing rharzui-ters, and. it has for its ohjert to provide means for renderingthe said slugs more serviceable for a certain (lass of: work thanthey have hereto.-
fult, been, as ordinarily eonstrueted. The particular class of work alzove'referred to, isthe printing of Christ-alas and New Years rards and other devices or arti- 'eles having printed thereon, greetings or annouiu-ements, hereinafter termed texts and also the senders name and, if desirable. the address also. Frequently these derives are printed in small batches of say, a few '30 dozen each and it otten happens that orders'are rereived from diii'erent persons requiring the same, text but with different senders names. For this reason the ohm actors for printing the text are generally stereotyped or otherwise constructed so as" to render them suitable for being permanently locked up in the ehase,While the type for printing: the senders name and ad dress, set up in the chase either in separable 40 type or in east slugs, are periodically hanged to give eiiert to the changes in sueh names and addresses. l a, ll illioulty has heretofore been experienced in using); slugs for printing the senders name heeause that name has sometimes necessilnled a slug of greater iueasure than oouid he a 'rommodaied between the side sticks or furniture ofthe obese, and the said name sometimes occupies a length of the slug ep- 'H'eriahIy short of its-full measure which latter was sufiieient to extend from one to the other side of the chase, the diflirulty in eonnection with the last-named derire arising out of the fact, that, unless the name were 5 exaetly central on the slug}: it rouhl not he centralized relatii'ely to the text. accord ing to the Present invention, these difiieul- Y ties are entirelyovereome by; forming the s aforesaid slugs so that the edgesthereef which hear the printingeha ructersglcan ex;
tend over the side sticks on furniture of the,
el ase and so that the said slugs ean he ed JllStLl' lon nmdmally withinthe chase.
The invention will he best understood hy," I
reference to the ac which i i v Figure 1 is an isometrieal view of a sing the'prlnting'matter on which isot shorter ineasure than the distance between the two sides of the chase; Fig, 2 is an .isouietrieal perspective view of a mold capable of proof, render it desirahle to he longitndinally adjusted in either direction.
The essence of the present invention may he said to reside in the formation of the name slugs 1 with their upper orprinting edges 2, overhanging the feet of the said rings either at one end, as shown in Fig. 1,
or at both ends, as shown in Fig. i, so
asto re'ndei them capable of extending over the adjneent furniture as shown in Fig. 3, or even over the side sticks 4 of the chase.
The slugs from their feet to the printing "faeeare of the usual type height exrepting at the m erl'ianging ends which are-of such heightas to admit of them extending over (mnveniently "without eontaeting with) the aforesaid furniture or side Si'l0l(.
As indicated in Fig. 3. a slugsuch as that cempanying drawings in, I
.dueing slugs such as shown in Fig. 1 il ig. 3
indicated in Fig. 1, can he locked u .in the chase 5 by the usual furniture 3, si 0 sticksi and quoins 6 along with a stereotype plate 7 and other slugs 8. 8, hearing the sen-dens address, the said furniture being of the usual hei ht so that the overhanging end or ends 0? the slug 1 can extend over it.
In the example. illustrated in Figs. 1, 3 and 4;, in which the senders names are of very short measure, th se names are, in the m general, of the construction ordinarilyof the slug, izz-ethat end where no'ovcrhang ispresent, and when this slug is set up in the chase 5, it can readily be adjusted '5 to, centralize the printing matter thereon relatively to that appearing on the stereoty e plate 7, as shown in Fig. 3.
' en the senders name is of approximately the same measure as, or of greater measure than, that of the text on the stereotype plate 7, then'it might be convenient to have the slug l provided, as shown in Fig. 5, with-an overhang at each ofits ends, so that it could be adjusted in either direction with one or both of those overhangs extendinig over one or both of the respectively a jacent furnitui'es in the chase 5.
For castin a slug such. as that represented in Fig. 1, t e mold would beconstructed preferably as shown in Fig. 2; this mold is,
employed in, the casting machine known commerciallyunder the trade mark Linotype, the only difference being that which exists one-of the end liners. This mold comprises the ordmaryibody 9, the ordinary ta it and twoen'd liners 11, 12 all rigidly secured together, the liner-'11 being recessed 'iasat 13 for the casting therein of the over- "so ban 114,-Fi g. 1, whilethe other liner 12 is "fof't e ordinary construction.
For-,the casting ofslugs such as that shown in Fi 5, both of whose ends overhang, the vrlin 12 as well as the liner 1]. would be re- I ceased in the same manner as that shown in connection livith the liner 11 in Fi 2. ;4;I, t:;is"-tn be understood that, so ar 'a s the "present invention is concerned, it is immaterial whether the charactersv for printing to the text on a stereotype plate as shown ntense in Fig. 3, a series of sin or on separable type, the special aim of t e invention being to provide sin? of such construction as admits of them sing readily adm'sted to secure centralization of the printing characters thereon relatively to the text.
Having described our invention we declare that what we claim-and desire to se- 4 cure by Letters Patent is 1. A printing form comprising printing slugs, one of said slugs being at least of the same measure as that of the others and receased at its end'below its printing surface, and the said recess being of such form and size as'to permit the longitudinal adjustment of the printing slug in the form.
2. A printing form comprising printing slugs, one of said slugs being at least of the same measure as that of the others and recessed at both ends below its printin surface, and the said recemes being 0 such form and size as to permit the longitudinal adjustment of the printing slug in opposite directions in the form.
