'Be it known that l, lnonas MAYOR, of the city and county oilrevidcnce, in .the- State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fliers; and -I do hereby declare that the tbl-- ylowing specification, taken in connect-ion with the drawing makingv av part oi' the same, isa full, clear, and cxactlleseription thereof.

The invention which is thevsubjcct of' this patentrelates to an improvement in the devices for holdinr the roving or vyarn by Yfriction before the yarn enters theorifice of the side-tube of the flier, to 'enable the yarn lyingvbetwe'en theffpoint-where it is so held and the delivery rollers to rcceiv'ea uniform twist.
LettersPateutfonanimprovement in iiiers involving the employmentofdevices for this end were granted to me under' 1 date of 'March 2.1, 1865, and this invention is an improvement thereon.
It consists in extending the neck of the flier, by means of a tube orequivalent device, below the neck proper or point of 'junction with the bows, and furnisbingsuch extended neck with a lateral orifice, .to allow the yarn to-bc conducted partially'aronud the outside of such tubobcfore being conducted into the Il.`he most convenient'way oi' employingthe invern' tion is exhibited in the drawing, especially in case fliers of old construction are 'to'be supplied witlfthe improvement.

This alternate tightening and loosening of the roving as the iiicr revolves gives a cert-ain wabbling inotion to the yarn or roving,A and is'exhibit'cd-in the appearance voi'a many cone,-the base of'which is at the neck of the flierA and the apex .at the bite ot the rolls. With Amy improvement there xs nosueli alternat ing, as the roving 'is always 'in 'a direct line from thebite of the rolls to that inside, edge of the tube iu the i n eek of the flier which is adjacent to the rolls; there-` fore there is a greater degree of regularity and more` firmness to the twist given by my improved flier than by any other kind known tonie.
It'will also be readily understood that-the neck of the tube constitutes an 'intermediate frictional point of' contact with the yarn between the bite of thefrolls and the frictional contact at the 'aperture nearthe lower end of the tube; therefore, between thei said delivery-aperture and the rolls there exists two dii'-` fereut qualities or degrees of twist, that portion oi' the yarn between the said aperture andthe neck of the tube being more lrmly twisted than that portion between the neck of the icr andthe rolls; 'and it is owing to this fact that I am enabled with my improved ilicr not only to obtain a superior degree of twist, but to wind the roving or yarn `with greater' solidity upon the bobbin than has, as I believe,l been heretofore accomplished with any oftbe'iliers in genflier, and effectsubstantially the saine result when the yarn is made" to drag over it surface in being led an extension of' the neck downwrd below the junction to the delivery-tube.
