PABACHUTE-GUN.
Application Specification of Letters Patent. filed February 10, 1913, Serial No. 747,854. Renewed June 1,
Patented June 30, 1914.
1914. serial no. 842,233.
To all whom it mm concern Bait" known t at I, Joan T. QUINN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Parachute-Guns, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is that of a toy; which I term a parachute gun, it comprising a gun by means of which a closed parachute can be propelled upward in the air, which para chute will, on descending, open, and support therefrom the miniature image of a man on a trapeze.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view, partly broken away, of my improved parachute gun before being discharged; Fig. 2 is a side ,view of the para chutelafter it, has commenced to descend.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates the stock of a toy gun, to the outer-end of which is transversely secured a strong bow spring 2, to the outer ends of which are secured ends of strong rubber bands 3,-to the other ends of which bands is secured a cord 4,
which can slide in slots 5 between the upper side of said stock and a barrel 6, secured at its ends only to said stock and spaced therefrom in the central portion to form said slots 5. In the rear portions'of said slots 5 are formed notches 7,, in which, the cord 4 can be retained if drawn rearwardly to the full extent. Said barrel is in general, of a semi-cylindrical form, and said stock is formed" in its upper surface with a semi cylindrical longitudinal groove, terrain with the barrel a substantially cylindrica bore 8, in which a cylindrical projectile is guided and directed when the gun is discharged. Said projectile comprises a cylindrical tube 9 of a diameter such that it fits property within the cylindrical bore of the arrei, one end 11 of said tube bein permanently closed. From tho-closed en extends outside the tube and alon its axis a stem 12 of a parachute 13 whic when collapsed, can fit within the bore of the Sai parachute is formed of paper It or other strips 15, which n their res iency tend image is inclosed within the tube,
to expand slightly when released from the bore of the gun, so that the arachute on descending can encounter initial resistance of the air and ex and. The upper ends of said strips are oosely connected to the up er end of the stem 12 and their lower cm are connected by cords 16 to a collar 17 on said stem, so as to limit the extent of opening of the parachute. From said closed end hang cords 20, from the lower ends of which han a transverse bar 21 or trapeze to which is attached by the hands the miniature image 22 of a man. Said image is made of heavy material, as iron, and to its feet is attached a closure 23 for the open end of the tube. The cord is drawn until it engages the notches, and the and the parachute and tube are pushed into the bore of the gun, in front of the notches, the parachute and tube are projected thereby from the gun. As soon as the parachute ceases to rise, said image drops and hangs from the parachute, which will then open and allow the image to slowly descend.
I claim 1. In a toy, a tube of size to fit within the barrel of a gun, a stem one end of which extends axially from one end of said tube, a parachute secured to the other end of the stem, said parachute when collapsed being of size to fit within said barrel, an image of heavy material within said tube, and means contained within the tube for suspending said image below said tube.
2. In a toy, a tube of size to barrel of a gun, a stem one extends axially fromone end thereof, a parachute secured to the other end of the stem, said parachute when colla sed Being fit within the end of which of size to fit within said barrel, a ar within said tube, but extensible therefrom, and an image of a man suspended from said bar.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing
