UNITED? all whom itmay'conccm Be it known that 1,, GHARLEs W. BOLTE, a
antic City, in the county ofAtlantic and tate of New Jersey,'have invented a certain 'ollowing is a specification.
This invention relates, .genm ally, to. .carons and particularly to cartons forg the, ransportation of eggs, and it has for its obect to provide a simple, comparatively inex ensive, and light weight receptacle in which he eggs may be packed for transportation vithout liability to damage or breakage, and t consists in the parts and combinations of )arts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming a wart of this specification, Figure 1 is a side levation, with the outer case partly broken way, of my improved egg carton. Fig. 2 s a perspective view of one of the trays. *ig. 3 is a vertical section through one of he trays. Fig. 4 is a plan view of one of he trays. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the ller.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts hroughout all the views.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 6 epresents the box or case of my improved arrier and 7 the lid therefor. As shown he box or case is cylindrical in shape and iaving a closed bottom, and the lid is adaptd to fit closely over its open end or top .nd is held against accldental dislodgment y a fastening device consisting of an elastic utrip 8 having one end secured to a wire hook 9 and the other end to a wire loop 10, the extreme ends of said loop being formed with eyes and mounted on a wire 11 secured A similar wire loop 12 is pivotally attached to a wire 13 at the op- )osite side of said box or case, and both "oops, and 12, are bent as shown so as to extend over and onto the lid when the latter is in place and to be held in position when the hook 9 is caught over the loop 12, thus securing the lid in place and providing for the ready and easy examination of the contents of box or case.
The egg trays, as shown, consist of a ring or cylinder 14 forming a frame of a diameter adapted to fit snugly within the box or case, and having their bottom ends covered by a fabric 15, said fabric having its edge secured to said ring or cylinder. As

-.Specificationof'Letters Patent. 1 Patented June 30, 1914. Application-filedJl/Earch 8, 1913. Serial No. 753,125. 1,
shown=the-. fabric is roughly disk shaped in .outline and notched, as. at 1G, 'along its edge and f'fastened by glue or paste or other a d ahesivesubstance totheiouter surface of the ring; or cylinder, but itqmay be secured to said cylinder by stitching, 1 as indicated in dotted lines Fig. 2, or by any other convenientmeans, the only essential being that the fabric be firmly secured to the cylinder or ring. The top of the ring or cylinder is provided with a cover 17 of similar fabric similarly secured in place, and which is cross-slitted, as at 18, at four equi-distant points, so as to form openings to pockets or cells arranged on the underside of said fabric cover 17. The pockets or cells, 19, are made separate or independent of the cover and are stitched or otherwise secured thereto, as indicated at 20, Figs. 2 and 4, around the openings therein, so that an egg may be readily pushed through the openings and into the pocket or cell. The pockets or cells are also secured by stitching to the bottom cover in order to hold them in their relative position to the openings and to prevent lateral movement of the eggs. Each of the trays is provided with a tape 21 which forms a handle, by which the same may be lifted or carried and inserted and removed from the box or case, said tape having its ends secured to opposite sides of the trays by stitching or otherwise.
By reason of the construction and arrangement described the eggs are isolated one from the other in the tray so that it is impossible for them to come into cont-act, thus minimizing the liability to breakage, and they are also held firmly and securely against other movement while in the pockets or cells.
The trays containing the eggs are arranged one on top of the other in the box or case, the bot-tom edge of the first tray placed in the box resting on the bottom of said box and each succeeding tray resting on the top edge of the tray beneath it. In practice the box or case is made of a depth to hold a predetermined number of trays and to provide a space above the same to receive a filler 22, consisting of a short ring or cylinder having a fabric cover 23 at one end, which is secured thereto in a manner similar to that employed in securing the fabric to the trays. The filler 22 is placed, fabric side or end down, on the top tray of the series of trays in the box or case, thus forming a fabric protection for the eggs in the said tray and filling the case or box so that When the lid is in place the series of trays Will be locked in place. I
l/Vhile I have described the carton as oylindrical in shape it is obvious that it may be rectangular, or octagonal and equally good results obtained.
WVhat I claim is: v v
1. A transportation tray for eggs, comprising a rigid frame having a fabric top I and a fabric bottom, pockets or cells for receiving the eggs interposed between said top and bottom and inclosed by said frame, said top being formed With openings correcells, and a case for receiving said tray.
2. An e tra com risin a frame having a fabric top and a fabric bottom, pockets or cells arranged between and secured to said top and bottom, said top being slitted to form openings corresponding in position to the pockets and said slitted portions forming covers for said pockets.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in the presence of two Witnesses.
