HERMAN WALLES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
I'IOISTING APPARATUS.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERMAN VVAnLEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoisting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for hoisting or lowering loads, and its object is to provide a simple and highly efficient apparatus by which heavy loads can very easily be lifted, a novel combination and arrangement of a winding drum and fall block being provided as will be hereinafter described in detail and claimed.
In order that the invention may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the apparatus; Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring specifically to the drawing 5 denotes a shaft carrying a drum 6 and having its ends fitted with diametrically opposite crank handles 7, whereby the drum is rotated, said drum being fast on the shaft. The shaft is carried by a yoke 8 provided with a suspension hook 9. On the shaft, alongside the drum, are loosely mounted pulleys l0 and 11, respectively, the same being located at the respective ends of the drum.
At 12 is indicated a fall block having two pulleys 13 and 14, respectively, and carrying a hook 15 from which the load to be hoisted or lowered is suspended. The hoisting line 16 is made fast at one end to the drum 6 so that it may be wound thereon or paid out when the drum is rotated. From the drum, the line extends to and around the pulley 13 and thence to and around the pulley 10, from which latter it extends to and around the pulley 14, then to and around the pulley 11, from which latter it extends to Specification of Letters Patent.

the fall block 12, and is made fast thereto, as indicated at 17.
In use, the device is suspended from a suitable support by means of the hook 9, and the load to be hoisted or lowered is attached to the fall block 12 by means of its hook 15. Now, upon operating the drum 6 by means of the crank handles 7 to wind the line 16 on said drum, the fall block is elevated, and upon paying out the line, the fall block is lowered. As in a combination of pulleys, where one continuous rope is used, a load on the free end will balance a weight on the movable block as many times as great as the load on the free end, as there are parts of the rope supporting the loadnot counting the free end, it will be evident that by the hereinbefore described arrangement of pulleys a pull of one pound, without considering the leverage obtained by the drum and the crank handles, will lift a load of four pounds carried by the fall block. In the present apparatus the end of the rope which is connected to the drum may be considered the free end.
I claim:
A hoisting apparatus comprising a winding drum, a shaft carrying the drum, a yoke carrying the shaft, said yoke having suspension means, pulleys loosely mounted on the shaft, at the respective ends of the drum, a fall block having a pair of pulleys, and a hoisting line made fast at one end to the fall block and at the other end to the drum, said line passing back and forth between the first and second-mentioned pulleys and around the same.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HERMAN WALLES.
