Specification of Letters Eatent.
Original application filed December 2, 1913, Serial No. 304,185. Divided and this application filed February 21, 1914. Serial No. 820,172.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY F. HAM- Mnnscrriirn'r, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan., have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Rail-Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification.
, This invention relates to new and useful improvements in rail fastening devices and more particularly to those used in connection with metalV railway ties, and this application is a division of the applicants former application, filed December 2, 1913, Serial Number 804,185.
An object of this invention is the provision of a rail fastening device so constructed as topermit the railsto be laid at any angle, spaced as desired and furthermore to provide a good substantial locking means for the rails, whereby the same will be held against displacement,
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a rail fastening device that can be readily assembled and taken apart by any novice.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combinations, and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is a side elevation of my rail.

Re erring to the accompanying drawings by similar characters of reference` the numeral 10 denotes in general my rail fastening device, which comprises a channel base plate 11, supporting two arched springs 12 and 13, which terminate into webs 12 and have formed thereon their lower face and extending downwardly therefrom lugs A and B, which in turn terminate into T heads C, which slidably operate in the slot D of the channeled base 11, and also in notches 13 formed therein at opposite ends. These springs 12 and 18 have formed upon their intermediate portion thereof blocks 11 and 15, which have transverse apertures formed therein, the object of which will be hereinafter more fully described. Secured to these blocks 11 and 15 by means of bolts 111 and 15, is my rail fastening means, which comprises a casing 16, composed of two plates, 17 and 18, having downwardly extending webs 19 and 20 formed thereon and which in turn have outwardly extended webs 21 and 22 formed therefrom. rFliese downwardly extended webs 19 and 20 have suitably spaced apertures formed therein to cooperate with those of the blocks 14.-15- 23--24c and 25, the latter blocks, also being disposed between the webs 19 and 20, and are substantially held in position by means of bolts 25', thus holding the plates 17 and 18 in spaced relation to each other, thereby producing a longitudinal slot 26 ltherebetween.
Formed in the plates 17 and 18 are key holes 27, the plate 17 having less holes in number than the opposite plate 18. The key holes in both of these plates being so arranged that when my device is in position for the laying of the rails, the key holes 27 in each of the plates 17 and 18 will be at an angle to each other, thus permitting the rails to be laid at any desired angle as well as permitting them to be spaced as desired.
The key holes 27 are for the reception of the keys 28, which are somewhat similar to the customary tie spike, owing to the similar construction of the head 29 and shank 30. The shank 30 having vertical grooves 31 formed therein and terminating into a wing portion 32, similar to that of the ordinary door key. The grooves 31 in the shank 30 being produced for the reception of a spring lock 33, which has an .offset portion 341 formed thereon to cooperate with one of the grooves 31 formed in the shank 30 of the keys 28, thus locking the keys 28 in a fixed position, which in turn assures a substantial locking means for the rails 35. It should be understood in this connection, however, that various minor changes in the details of construction, can be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
From the foregoing disclosure taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be manifest that a rail fastening device is provided, to answer the purpose as fully set forth, and it may be stated that my device may be applied to ties of any nature.
I-Iaving thus fully described this invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is l. A rail fastening device comprising a series of plates, having key holes formed therein, the said plates supported by a series of arched springs mounted upon a base.
2. A. rail fastening device comprising a base, springs mounted thereon, plates supported by the said springs and having key holes formed therein, for the reception of keys having vertical grooves formed therein, and a locking spring having an offset portion formed thereon to cooperate with the vertical grooves of the keys.
3. A rail fastening device having a flat top and means whereby rails are Iocked to the same, springs supporting the top and having webs formed thereon, with lugs formed therefrom, and terminating into T heads and operating in the slot and notches, formed in the channel base.
4.-. A rail fastening device having a flat top composed of two separate plates, a slot formed therebetween, key openingsformed in said plates, keys operating in 'said key openings and having grooves formed therein, a spring to lock said keys in position, downwardly and outwardly extending webs formed therefrom, the said plates, blocks holding said platesin spaced relation to each other, springs having blocks formed thereon, with transverse apertures formed therein for the reception of bolts to prevent the displacement of the plates and a` channel Y base as a supporting means for the same.
