POWER-SHOVEL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, S'roRRs M. BIsHoP, a citizen of. the United States of America, re-
- siding at No. 102 Waverly Place, in the city of Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Power-Shovels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to power shovels, and the object of my invention is to provide a means for using a power shovel for digging toward the machine at a lower elevation than the base of the machine and depositing the material at the elevation' of the base, or higher; together with such elements and combinations as are hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed. I accomplish these objects by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings,'in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan of my invention. Fig. 3 is a modified form of my invention. Fig. 4. is a plan of the. modified form shown in Fig. 3.

On the-table, A,'I place the disk, O, which is stationary, the platform, D, revolves thereon actuated by the pinion, 14,- engaging the teeth on the disk, O.
b, b, are suitable wheels to support the platform, D. On the platform, D, I mount the mast, E, and boom, F, and the apparatus for supporting and operating the shovel. The mast, E, is made up of two pieces, 9, 71., secured together at one end by means of suitable bolts, y, or in any convenient manner. The other ends of said pieces, g, h, are provided with laterally pro ecting bolts, J, H, passing through openings in the brackets, K, L, whereby the pieces, 9, b, may rotate upon thesaid bolts, J, H, in their brackets, K, L, respectively. The brackets, K, L, are secured to the platform, D, one on each side and near one end thereof. The boom, F, is also composed of two pieces, Z, m, joined together at one end by means of suitable bolts, M, or in any convenient manner,
and provided at the other ends with bolts O, P, passing through the brackets, R, S, attached to the sides and near one end of the platform, D, and so arranged that the boom, F, may be rotated upon the bolts, O, P, in the brackets, R, S.
The mast, E, is preferably provided with Specification of Letters Patent.

the tie irons, T, which are secured to the platform, D, at t, and to the bolt, j, passing through the pieces, g, h, or in any suitable manner for the purpose of holding the mast, E, .in an elevated position. On the platform, D, I also mount the drums, 3 and 4, in a suitable block, 5, operated by an engine, 6, or in any suitable manner. Around the drum, 4, I place a few turns of a cable, 7, which passes over a sheave, 8, mounted in a block, 9, attached to the mast, E, and also over the sheave, 10, in the block, 11, attached to the boom, F; the cable, 7, also passes over the sheave, 12, in the block, 9, and over the sheave, 13, in the block, 11; it is then attached to the block, 9, as shown in Fig. 1. I do not limit myself to just this arrangement of the tackle. Any means for adjusting it so that the cable, 7, by the rotation of the drum, 4., about which it has a few turns wound, will cause the boom, F, to be raised or permitted to lower, will be sufficient. The drum, 3, has a few turns of a cable, V, wound about it which cable passes over the sheave, c, mounted in the mast, E, and around the sheave, w, of the block, W, attached to the shovel, X; from thence it passes to the sheave, z, in the block, Z; thence to the block, W, to which it is attached. I do not limit myself to this manner of mounting the tackle, as any convenient arrangement for connecting the cable, V, with the shovel, X, so that the shovel may be raised by the rota tion of the drum, 3, and permitted to be lowered'by the reverse movement of the drum, will be sufiicient.
The shovel, X, is attached to the dipper stick, Y, which is pivoted on the bolt, M, at the junction of the two pieces, Z, m, of the boom, F, or in any suitable manner connected to said boom, so that the weight of the boom may be brought onto the dipper stick to hold it into the bank, and when raised to pull the dipper out of-the bank and dump it above. The shovel is provided at the heel with a movable door, m, which may be opened and the contents of the shovel allowed to escape when the shovel has been raised to a sufficiently high altitude, as shown in Fig. 1. I may open the door, 00, by means of the arm, Q, attached thereto, coming into contact with a suitable block, 9.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The mechanism may be readily removed to the place for work and then the boom, F, and the dipper stick, Y, and
shovel, X, are allowed to descend until they occupy substantially the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, the dipper stick held down by the boom, and the toe of the shovel, X, in engagement with a portion of the earth, stone or other commodity to be raised. By the rotation of the drums, 3 and 4, the
shovel may be caused to enter the bank to,
the degree desired, the weight of the boom preventing the shovel from umping or simply dragging, and the boom, F, may then be raised until it occupies the desired altitude to permit the shovel, X, to occupy an elevated position suiiicient to be dumped into a car or other receptacle. After the shovel has been raised above the surface of the ground the turntable, C, may be caused to operate, even during the period that the boom, F, and shovel, X, are being raised so that by the time the shovel has reached its dumping altitude, it will be swung around over the receptacle, not shown, into which it is desired to dump the contents thereof.
For the purpose of rotating the platform, D, I start the engine 203, which operates the gear wheel, 14., depending from the under surface of the platform, D,cmeshing with the periphery of the disk, 0, which may be provided with teeth for that purpose. By reversing the engine I reverse the rotation of the platform.
In Figs. 3 and 4, I show a modification of my invention in which the means for filling and raising the shovel is mounted on a derrickor other platform instead of on a turntable. The mast, 100, is secured to the platform, 101, supported by the tie rods, 102, or in any suitable manner. I hinge the two-part boom, 103, to the mast, 100, by means of a suitable bolt, 104:, secured in the collar bracket, 105, placed about the mast, 100. Pivoted at the end of theboom, 103, and between the two parts of which the boom is formed, I place the dipper stick, 106, carrying the shovel, 107, as shown and described in reference to Figs. 1 and 2. On the platform, 101, I mount the drums, 108 and 109, and an engine or source of power, 110. About the drums, 1.08 and 109, I place a few turns of the tackle ropes, 111 and 112, which pass over the sheaves 113 and 114:, on the mast and over the pulleys, 115 and 116,'and blocks, 117 and 118; and over the pulleys, 119 and 120, and blocks, 121 and 122, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. I do not limit myself to this method of connecting up the tackle, however, as any suitable manner of mounting the parts may be employed. The shovel may be dumped by means of the bell crank lever, 123, connected by rod, 124, to the door, 125, in the heel of the shovel when the free arm of the bell crank lever strikes a projection, 126, attached to the boom, 103.
By my invention I have provided a very simple, inexpensive machine by means of which a ditch may be dug within narrow confined limits, the shovel digging toward and not away from the machine.
What I claim as'my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a power shovel, a boom composed of two parts; a dipper stick suspended between said parts at the end thereof farthest from the mast, the two parts of the boom so arranged that the dipper can be raised between them and opened above the base of the boom; a dipper attached to said dipper stick; a closure for the dipper; a trip connected with said closure; means for automatically operating said trip and unlocking said closure when the dipper has been raised to its required altitude; means for raising and lowering said dipper; and means for raising and for lowering said boom and dipper simultaneously, whereby the weight of the boom will remain on the dipper while digging without the aid of any other agency, said means adapted to raise the boom when the dipper is filled and is being raised.
