WIPING DEVICE FOR DIE-STAMPING- MACHINES.

To all whom it may concern; Be it known that we, Ennns'r WVYMnN Savonr, of Park Row Studios, Clifton, Bristol, Gloucester, England, fine-art publisher,
and ALFRED FRANCIS BATTEY, of 11 Oarthu sian street, London, England, engineer, have invented certain new and useful Improve-' This invention relates to wiping devices for die stamping machines of the type 1n which the die is moved from the die press to an inking device and back again.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved device for wiping the dieafter.

A device made in accordance with this in-; vention comprises a web of paper adapted. to be wound from one spool onto another and to pass over the surface of a wiper;
means for intermittently raising and lowering the wiper so that the paper int-ermittently comes in contact with the die, means for imparting oscillating rotary movement to the wiper, and means for traveling the paper with the surface of the wiper as the wiper rotates in one direction, during the period that the die is passing under and in contact with the paper, the motion of the die being in the opposite direction to the travel of the paper.

The wiping drum 6 is adapted to be lowered by meansof a cam 79 on the shaft (1 which presses on the bearing block 9 against the spring c. Oscillating rotary movement is given to the shaft 9 by means of crank 1 connecting rod 8 crank t shaft o crank '11), and connecting rod w.
1/ is a bowl on the rod 05 whichis kept against the face of the cam .2 by the spring not shown. The cam is on the main shaft of the die press. The wiping drum 0 is adapted to be oscillated on its axis by the crank 3 and connecting rod 4 which receives reciprocating movement from the lever 5.
The lever 5 is pivoted at 6 and carries a bowl 7 actuated by a cam S suitably driven. The rod 4 is held in contact with the crank 3 by spring 9. The position of the end of the rod 4 on the crank 3 and the consequent amountof oscillating movement of the drum 6 is adjusted by connecting rod 10, crank 11 shaft 12 and handle 1.3. The handle 13 is adapted to be held in any position on the quadrant 14 by spring bolt in the handle.
In operation the die is adapted to be traveled from the inking device to the press. When the die is being inked the wiping drum is in its raised position, after the die has been inked and as it approaches the wiping device, the wiping drum descends and just as the die comes under the wiping drum the drum is caused to rotate in a direction contrary to the travel of the die. The paper being traveled over the face of the die, effectually wipes the surface of the die, the die travels on the press and receives a blow, the wiper then ascends and is rotated in the reverse direction at the same time the slack of the paper is wound up on the spool c and the die returns to the inker. The spool b is held against free rotation by a spring pressed disk 16, the pressure being adjusted in relation to the pressure of the spring 0 on the friction disk is, so that the drive of the pulley m on the disk is is not suflicient to rotate the spool 0 to draw the web of paper off the roll 7) until assisted by the pull of the wiper when pressing the paper on to the die. The wiping drum is or may be covered with a pad or fabric which can be tightened in any well known manner, such as shown in Figs. 4 and 5 in which the drum 6 is provided with a recess 15 in the periphery of the drum. The side plates 16 of the drum form walls at the sides of the recess 15, which walls form bearings for a shaft 17 which passes through the recess and which is provided at one end with a ratchet wheel 18 and at the other with a collar 19, the collar and ratchet preventing longitudinal movement of the shaft. A pawl 20 is pressed normally into engagement with the ratchet 18 by a spring 21. A squared end 22 is provided on the shaft 17 for turning the same when it is desired to tighten the fabric, the other end of the fabric beingsecured to pegs 23 disposed in the recess.

2. A wiping-device for use in die stamping machines comprising a frame, a guide and two spools mounted on the frame, a wiping; drum mounted in the guide, said wiping drum being provided with a pad and means for tightening the pad, a web of paper adapted to be wound from one spool to another and to pass over the surface of the wiping pad, means for intermittently raising and lowering the wiping drum from and to pressing-contact with a die as the die passes beneath the same, means for imparting drum mounted on bearings said wiping oscillatory rotary movement to the wiping-drum, said wiping-drum as it rotates in one direction traveling the paper therewith, means for winding up the paper traveled by said wiping drum, said traveling of the paper taking place during the period the die is passing under the paper and in contact with the paper, the travel of the paper being in the opposite direction to the motion of the die.

A wiping device for use in die stamping machines comprising a frame, a guide and two spools mounted in the frame, a wipin the guide, said wiping drum being provided with a pad, means for tightening the pad, a spring adapted to press the wiping-drum in one direction in the guide, a web of paper adapted to be wound from one spool to another and to pass over the surface of the wiping pad, means for driving the spool in which the paper is wound comprising a pulley driven continuously and a friction clutch between the driving pulley and windingspool, means for holding the spool from which the paper is wound against free rotation, means for intermittently wiping drum and the paper wound; therearound into contact with the die against the action of the spring, means for imparting oscillating rotary movement to the wipingdrum and traveling the paper therearound, said traveling unwinding the paper from one roll and the friction clutch acting to turn the other roll to wind the slackened paper thereon.
