of Illinois, have invented certain'new and.
useful Improvements in Friction-Clutches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to friction clutches and has for its object broadly to. provide an adjustment or take-up device in a friction clutch, which will permit the wearing surfaces of the clutch to be adjusted relatively to each other desired amounts Without affecting the efficiency of the clutch or the action of its relatively moving parts.
The invention has relation to the subject matter of my companion application, Serial No. 756,370, Iiled March 24, 1913, and presents another form of adjustment or take-up device of novel construction for use in friction clutches. i
A further object of the invention is to provide an adjustment or take-up device vin a friction clutch which may readily be operated without requiring that any of the parts of the clutch be removed.
Additional objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof.

Referring to the drawings, 11 designates the driving'shaft and 12 the driven shaft. Upon a collar 13 keyed to the driving shaft 11 at 14 is fastened a fly-wheel 15 by vbolts or other suitable fastening means '16 so that the fly-wheel, collar and shaft rotate as a single unit and together may be termed the drivingeleinent. The shaft 12 is journaled at its end adjacentthc shaft 11 iii a pilot bearing 17 provided at the center of the flywheel 15. Upon the shaft 12 ay friction disk 18 is mounted to move longitudinally of the shaft, and this disk is caused to rotate with the shaft 12 by a spline 19. A clutch casthe fly-wheel by means of bolts 22 and incloses the disk 18. Within the casing 2-1 a thrust ring 23 is mounted to move longitudinally thereof and is held against rotation relatively Ato lthe casi-ng and ily-wheel by means of driving pins 24 threaded into the casing and taking into transverse slots 25 in the periphery of the thrust ring. A friction ring 20 of asbestos or -other suitable material is interposed between the adjacent faces of the {1y-wheel and disk and a similar friction ring is interposed between the adjacent faces of the disk and thrust ring. The face of the thrust ring distant from the disk 18 is formed to provide a plurality of sets of beveled or inclined thrust seats 26 which receive the thrust from the bell cranks be presently described. In the present instance each set consists of three seats located at dierent distances from the `friction disk A1S and arranged in stepped relation. The two seats nearest the disk v18 are preferably formed by cutting away the face of the thrust -iing adjacent the reai" wall of the lcasing and the seat farthest from the disk 18 is a continuation of the main portion vof this face of the thrust ring.
The thrust ring is moved against the friction disk to throw in the clutch by a vset of bell cranks 27 which are pi-votally mounted in lugs 23 `upon a ring 29 provided at 'the rear o'f the casing. rThe ends of the arms `of each of these bell cranks are preferably but not necessarily provided "with the rollers 31 and 32, the roller 3l on the short arm of the ybell crank being adapted to travel outwardly over a` beveled seat 2G of the thrust ring when the bell crankis moved from its normal position about its pivotal connection the thrust member The roller 32 is with the ring 29 to force toward the fly-wheel.
