To all whom it may concern.' f
Be it known thatI, FRANK W. BURPEE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of Bellingham, in the county of Whatcom yand State of Washing ton, have invented certain new anduseful. Improvements in Coating-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention pertains to a continuous machine ofthe above type primarily devised for coating paper receptacles with paraiin to render them impervious to liquid.
The primary aim of the invention is the provision of' automatic apparatus capable of presenting receptacles progressively in different angular-'positions for coat-ing, dripping and delivery.
With reference to vt-he accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters y designate corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure lis a side elevation 'of a machine embodying the features of my invent-ion in such form as now preferred by me, lparts being broken away. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same'with portionsof some of the parts broken away.l Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section onw line 3-3 of Fig. 1. the guides' or track and the provision for removing the coatedreceptacles from the carrier, and Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on line 5--5 of Fig. 4.
The lnvention embraces work supporting mechanism appropriately designed for ad vancing receptacles sidewise for coating and subsequently upending them for dripping and finally inverting them for delivery.
In the present embodiment I have shown work holders 2, of preferred form for supporting tapered receptacles or bottles, as 1, combined with a carrier in the form of 'a swivel link belt 3 which extends about guiding sprocket wheels 4, 4 and 5 with a portion of its upper run sagging in an elevated tank 6 between driving sprocket wheels 7, 7, fixed to shafts 7 7 which are journaled on the tank and connected by link belt gearing 8. l 4

naled on tank 6 and provided with a drive pulley `9 to which poweris applied to operate belt 3 in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. l.

ceive receptacles 1 sidewise, each comprise concaved side-' seats 20, 21, secured to respective end portions -of a base 22 and provided with inwardly projecting langes 20', 21 which serve as end guards to hold the receptacle seated in the holderl from endwise displacement. In this connection it will be observed that-the base arts of the holders extend crosswise of an are secured to respective link sections of beltt 3 in alternate arrangement with swivel coupling sections ing engagement with opposite angular lugs y 423 of the holders 2 and extending into angular approach and delivery guide sections 13, 13 which are secured to respective brackets 10 of tank 6.
The receptacles l are placedl in the holders advancing along the approachlguide sections 13. and thence carried'v along the guide sections 13 in engagement with the rotatable members 11, 11 which `retain the receptacles in the holders during their immersion in a body of.` paraiiin, as C, contained in tank 6 and maintained, as will be later understood, in a iuid state.
Extending from the guide sections 13 are quarter turn spiral guide sections 3, .4a adapted to upend the holders advancing from the tank and connected, respectively, with horizontal guide sections 3", 4b, which extend over an inclinedtrough part 6 of. tank 6 and serve to guide the holders in u soy ended position with the receptacles mout down for dripping.
Extending from the guide sections 3b, 4b and secured to fixed brackets 10 are half turn, spiral guide sections 3, 4 adapted to invert the holders advancing from trough 6 and connected, respectively, with horizontal guide'sections 3d, 4d. These guide sections 3, 4d which serve to guide -the holders with the receptacles bottom down for delivery, are provided with quarter turn spiral terminations 3, 4e for guidingtheempty holders to horizontal position.

Conveyer 16 is conveniently driven through the medium of-a link belt 16 applied to suitable sprocket Wheels secured to shafts 18', 4 which are journaled, in fixed connection with the wheels 18, 4 respectively, on a bracket 19 .supported in common with the journal bearing 19 of Wheel 4', on a standard 19.
VCombined with tank 6 is a chamber 6". provided with a drain cock 24 andcontaining a pipe coil 25 which is connected through circulating pipes 26, 26 with a Water heater, not shown, carrying water at suitable temperature' to maintain the paraffin in tank Gat a proper temperature for coating.
Positioned beneath the lower run of belt 3 is an auxiliary steam heating appliance in the form of a pipe coil 28 which is connected with a generator, not shown, to be served with steam at suitable temperature to maintain a heated zone about the belt 'of sufficient intensity to clear the holders 2 of coating material as they pass between the Wheels 4', 5 in guiding engagement with a plate or strip 29 which is supported with coil 28 on cross pieces fixed to the legs of tank 6, as clearly shown. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America, is v 1. In a lmachine of the character described, a carrier provided With an adjustable Work holder, means whereby the Work .conveyed 9nsaid carrier is coated, means for adjusting the Work holder of said carrier t0 upend 'the Work subsequently to the coating thereof, a delivery conveyer, and means` for deiieeting the upended ,Work to said .con-
, veyer.
2. A. coating machine comprising a carr1er supported for movement, an angularly ed receptacle on its side on said carrier, said holder comprising spaced end seats .of open form to permit of the passagel of coating material therethrough intoA the ends of the receptacle held thereby, means in the path of said carrier for supporting coat-- ing material, and means for moving said holder to upend the receptacle subsequently to the coating operation.
3. A coating machine comprising a carrier supported for movement, an angularly movable holder for supporting an open ended receptacle on its side on sald carrier, said holder comprising spaced end seats open at one side for insertion and removal of the Work, saidend seats being also of open form to permit of the passage of coating materialtherethrough into the ends of the receptacle held thereby, means in the path of said carrier for supporting coating matcrial, means for moving said holder to upend the receptacle subsequently to the coating operation, and means for-removing the receptacle from said holder when said receptacle is in an upright position.

In a machine for coating receptacles, meansffor coating a receptacle, a movably supported carrier provided with Vmovable means for holding a receptacle in horizontal position crosswise of the line of travel for coating, comprising spaced end seats of open form adapted for reception of respective end portions of the Work and means for 'moving said holding means to upend and subsequently invert its receptacle.
5. In a machine for coating open receptacles, a tank for holding coating material, a carrier supported for movement through said tank, a movable holder on said carrier havin@ seats of open form spaced laterally of the carrier for reception of opposite end portions of a receptacle,l and means for moving vsaid holder to hold its receptacle on its side during movement through said tank and first on one end and then on the other subsequently to the coating operation.
6. In a machine for coating receptacles, a tank for coating material, a carrier supported for movement through said tank, means on said carrier for holding a receptacle with its end portions at opposite sides of the plane of said carrier, said last named means including spaced seats for the end portions of the receptacle and being movable to position a receptacle in upright position with respect to said carrier," means for moving said holding means subsequently to the coating operation, and means arranged alongside the path of said carrier adapted to project between the seats of said receptacle holding means for removing a receptacle from the carrier. l
