SAND-DISTRIBUTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 9, 1914.
Application filed March 10, 1914. Serial No. 823,774.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP TRAsK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yonkers, in the county of VVestchester and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sand- Distributors, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improvement in sand distributers designed particularly for use with automobiles and the like, and adapted when operated, to distribute sand over the area over which the automobile is about to travel in order to prevent skidding and slipping of the wheels.
The main object of the present invention is the provision of a sand distributer connected to and driven at will from the automobile mechanism and adapted to spread sand over the surface immediately in advance of the wheels to insure proper gripping action of the wheels.
The invention in the preferred form of details will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a View in elevation, illustrating the improvement. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings, the improved sand distributer comprises a casing 1, into which sand or other material to be distributed is delivered through a hopper mouth 2. The lower or delivery end of the casing is fully opened and slightly flared as at 3. Supported below the casing and to an appropriate part of the vehicle is a bracket 4 of right angle shape, in the relatively horizontal section of which is mounted a shaft on the upper end of which is mounted a disk 6 surmounted by a cone 7 fitting within the casing 3, the maximum dimension of the cone being materially less than that of the casing. The disk 6 projects beyond the base of the cone and is provided with a conical depression 8 in such projected surface having an upwardly and outwardly inclined directing edge 9, which underlies the bottom edge of the flaring discharge end of the casing 1. Radially agitators in the form of wings 10 are arranged from the cones 6 to prevent clogging of the sand or other material within the casing.
The lower end of the shaft 5 is provided with a bevel gear 11 adapted to mesh with the gear 12 and mounted upon a shaft 13 supported in the bracket 4:, the opposite end of the shaft being provided with a sprocket wheel 14 driven through the medium of a sprocket chain from any suitable source of power of the automobile.
In operation of the device, the rotation of the disk 6 operates to direct the stream of sand or other material over a wide spreading surface, thereby providing a gripping surface for the wheels and preventing skidding and slipping.
By preference, the shaft 5, disk 6 and cone 7 are movably mounted in the bracket arm 4:, being held in operative or lowered position by a spring 15. A lever 16 of angle arm type is mounted on the bracket so that the movable parts just described may when desired, be elevated and held in elevated position, whereby to prevent operation of the device. In the elevated position the disk 6 completely closes the lower end of the casing.
It is of course obvious that the sand distributer can be equally effective in its sand distribution in front or in rear of the vehicle, asin some instances, it is desirable to sand a surface in rear of the vehicle to prevent following vehicles from skidding or slipping.
What is claimed is 1. A sand distributer including a sand containing casing, a disk rotatably mounted below the casing, means for rotating the disk, said disk being formed with a spreading concavity designed to receive the material from the casing, a cone carried by the disk and operating within the casing to direct material into said concavity.
2. A sand distributer including a sand containing casing, a disk rotatably mounted below the casing, means for rotating the disk, said disk being formed with a spreading concavity designed to receive the material from the casing, a cone carried by the disk and operating within the casing to direct material into said concavity, and a blade carried by the cone.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PHILIP TRASK.
