To all whom it may concern Be .it known that l, iVILLiAM T. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Non-Refillable Bottle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to bottles or other similar containers for the purpose of dispensing choice liquors or other liquids.
he primary object of the invention is to construct a bottle neck in such a manner as to effectually seal. the same for transportation purposes or the like and so arrange it as to make it easy to deliver the liquid from the bottle and at the same time pre vent the unauthorized refilling of the bottle for the purpose of adulteration or deception.
.Another object of the invention is to construct a bottle neck of the character indicated by the use of devices of a simple, emcient and cheap nature so as to make the bottles adaptable for use for various grades of bottle goods.
The foregoing and other obyects of the invention will hereinafter be more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the drawings forming part of this specification in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in-which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a bottle neck made in accordance with this invention in a preferred embodiment the section being taken substantially on the line 11. of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same; Fig. 3 is a view corresponding to Fig. 1, but illustrating it in the position for pouring; Fig. l is a transverse sectional detail on the line ii-'-.l-. of Fig. l.
lVhile for convenience of description the term bottle is being used throughout the specification, I wish it to be distinctly understood that such term is to be interpreted as comprehensive of any sort of container such as a jug, demijohn or the like.
A bottle 10, by way of illustration, is shown as including a neck 11 having an enlarged mouth 12 at its upper end. As shown in Figs. 1 to 1, a cup 13 having a spher1cal bottom is inserted into said mouth and is adapted to rest substantially against the lower outwardly flaring walls of said mouth.
.lf, however. any irregularities should occur in the structure, a layer or strip of cork 1a or other cushioning means may be inserted between the cup and said wall, it being my object to construct these parts on a commercial scale at a lower cost than would be possible if the several parts were to be specially fitted. The extreme lower end of the cu p has a hole 13 and the upper portion of the cup is pn'cferably of tubular form, its upper end terminating below the extreme upper end of the bottle neck.
Art 15 shown a valve adapted to rest upon the spherical bottom of the cup and normally seal or close the hole 13 thereof. Said valve is or a light construction and has a smooth spherical surface, the curvature of which is the same as the curvature or radius of the cup bottom. To increase the lightness of the valve it may be concave on its interior, if desired.
A guard 16 introdimed into the cup and is adapted to be so related to the valve as to provide for the valve a limited extent of movement away from the hole 13. Said guard is preferably in the nature of a rigid body fitting substantially the tubular portion of the cup and having vertical series of grooves 16 around its periphery through which the liquid may pass after passing through the hole 13, and the upper ends of said grooves communicate with transverse or radial end grooves 16 which lead toward the center of the guard. The guard 16 secured in place by means of a plug 17 which is shown of a tubular form and fitted into the mouth of the bottle and extending into or adjacent the upper end of the cup. The bore 17 of the plug 17 is adapted to be sealed by any suitable form of cork 18 which is to be withdrawn as usual. when it is desired to empty the bottle. The plug 17 and the inner surface of the wall 12 are provided with registering grooves 19 into which any suitable form of cement may be introduced through one or more holes 20 at the upper end.
ln the operation of the devices above de scribed it will be seen that when the bottle tilted. as indicated. in Fig. the liquid may pass freely out through the hole 1.3 moving the valve toward or against the guard 16. The diameter of the cup is greater than the diameter of the valve, whereby a space will be insured for the liquid to flow through the grooves 16',! thereof, said cup having a curved bottom thence outwardly through the radial grooves 16 and the bore 1'7. The peculiar construction of the valve and its relation to the cup and the guard are such that it will be impossible for any liquid to flow in a reverse direction through the hole 13 because of the fact that the valve will automatically seal such hole. Looking at Fig. 8 for example, it will be apparent that any attempt to cause liquid to flow in a reverse direction through the neck will result in causing the valve immediately to assume the dotted line position, and because of its curvature and size it will be sure to span such hole. Furthermore, because 0t the peculiar construction of the guard and its relation to the plug 17, it will be impossible to so tamper with the valve as to prevent the foregoing action.
The several parts of this device may be made of any suitable materials and the relative sizes and proportions of the same may be varied to aconsiderable extent without departing from the spirit of the invention hereinafter claimed.
Having thus described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1- In a bottle, a cup secured in the neck provided with a central opening, a guard lying wholly within the cup and frictionally engaging the inner face of the cup at the point of curvature of the bottom, whereby the said guard will be spaced from the said bottom to form a chamber, a valve having a flat top face and a curved under face conforming to the curvature of the said bottom, with the said valve loosely disposed in the chamber to normally lie in spaced relation to the guard and close the opening in the said bottom, the upper flat face of the valve being adapted to engage the under side of the guard when the bottle is tilted, a tubular plug in the neck and extending into the upper end of the cup, projections on the guard and engaged by the plug to secure the guard rigidly within the cup, with the said projections spacing the said plug from the body of the said guard, and means for locking the said plug in the said neck.
