To all whom it may concern l'e it known that l, CHARLES DnNrnLsoN, citizen of the United States, residing at Cannon Falls, in the county oit' Goodhue and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing- Boards; and l. do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has for its object to provide an improved ironing board and is in the nature of an improvement on my United States Patent 1,078,404, issued of date September lo, 1913, and entitled lroning board.

To the above end, the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.

ln the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.

Referring to the drawings: Figure l is aplan view of the improved ironing board, supported from the top of a kitchen table, some parts being indicated by the means of dotted lines; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, some parts being broken away; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line ma w3 of Fig. 2.

The numeral l indicates an ironing board having secured to its end portion, pairs of laterally spaced short supporting legs, 2 and 8. The pair of legs, 2, project straight down from the ironing board l., and are rigidly connected to a tie bar 41, rigidly secured to said ironing board. The tie bar l, also prevents warping of the board l. The legs 3, are secured to the ironing board l, for .longitudinal adjustment, thereon by a clamping head. 5. Said clamping head 5, is provided with a pair of oppositely projecting trunnions 6, on which the upper ends of the legs 3 are pivotally mounted for swinging movement toward and from the legs 2. At their intermediate portions the legs 3. are rigidly connected by a tie rod 7. Notches S and are found in the lower inner end portions of the pairs of legs 2 and 3, respectively. These notches embrace opposite edges of the top of a kitchen table, indicated. as an entirety, by the character y. l/Vhen in an operative l position, the legs 3 are set oblique, as best shown in Fig. Q.

r.l."he clamping head 5 is mounted for longitudinal sliding movements on the under side of the ironing board l and is provided at its intermediate portion with a notch 10, through which works a guide rail l1, rigidly secured to the under side and longitudinal center of the ironing board l. This rail ll channel. shaped in cross section and is proA vi ded with a longitudinally extended slot 1Q, l which extends substantially the full length of said rail and within which works the body portion of a thumb nut equipped clamping bolt' lf3. he head of this bolt works in the channel of the guide rail 1l and its lower end extends through a perforation in the clamping head 5,.as best shown in Fig. 3. Obviously by adjusting the thumb nut of the clamping bolt, the clamping head 5 may be frictionally secured to the rail. ll in different longitudinal adjustments with respect thereto. This adjustment permits the oblique legs 3 to be set in different adjustments with respect to the legs 2 in order to adapt the ironing board to tables of different sizes. The notched engagement of the clamping head 5 with the guide rail ll holds said head againsttransverse or twisting movements with respect to said guide rail.

To prevent warping` of the end of the ir0n ing board l atransverse cleat lll is rigidly secured by screws or otherwise to the ironing board 'l adjacent to the inner end of the rail ll. The weight of the ironing board l holds the notched ends of the legs 2 and 3 engaged with opposite edges of the top of the table Y and, under increased pressure on the ironing board l, the legs 3 tend to fold inward and upward, thereby drawing the opposing notched ends S and 9 of the legs Q and 3 into tighter engagement with the top of the table Y.

To apply a skirt to the main ironing board l.. the front end thereof is elevated a distance sufficient to carry the notched ends 9 of the legs 3 out of contact with the top of the table Y. ln this position of the parts, the skirt may be slipped over the elevated end of the main ironing board l. During the application of the skirt to the ironing board l, the legs B will fold, when engaged by the skirt, into close engagement with the main ironing board l, thereby permitting the skirt to freely slip thereover. After the skirt is past the legs 3, said legs 3 Will drop, under the action otl gravity, and with the lowering of the elevated end ot' the main ironing hoard, the notched ends 9 can be made to again embrace the adjacent edge ot the top of the table Y,

lVhat claim is:

l. The combination, ot' an ironing board, two sets ot' leO's for said ironing board having notched lower ends engageable with the opposite edges of the top ot a table, a guide rail secured to said ironing hoard, a clamping head slidahl7 mounted on said guide rail, and having an intermediate notch through Which said guide rail Works, and means for securing said clamping head to said rail in ditl'erent longitudinal adjustments with respect thereto, one set of said legs being secured to said clamping head, for folding movements toward and from the other set of said legs, which are rigidly secured to said ironing board.

'2. The combination, ot' an ironing hoard, two sets of legs for said ironing hoard hav ing notched lower ends engagealole with the opposite edges of the top of a table, a guide rail secured to said ironing board, a clamping i head slidaloly mounted on said guide rail, and having a pair of oppositely projecting trunnions, and a thumb-nut-equipped clamping holt for securing said clamping head in different longitudinal adjustments on said rail, one set of said legs being mounted on the t-runnions of said clamping lie-ad, t'or folding movements toward and from the other set ot' said legs, which are rigidly secured to said ironing hoard.
