To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, James T. SARGENT, residing at Merchantville, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, a citizen of the United States, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Pipes, of which improvements the following is a specification.
The invention described herein relates to certain improvements in pipes, such improvements being a fuller development of some of the features set forth in Letters Patent 1,064,5d7, granted to me June 10th, 1913.
The invention is hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
lfn the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a sectional elevation of a pipe embodying my improvement; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on an enlarged scale of adjacent portions of the stem section, showing the same construction as illustrated in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional View of a pipe illustrating a modification of the invention; Fig. f is an enlarged view of the construction shown in F 3, and Figs. 5 and 6 are views similar to Fig. l illustrating further modifications.
In the constructions shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the smoke flows from the bowl 3 through the passage 1 to the port 5. It then passes through the chamber or enlargement 8 and through the passage 9 in a direction the reverse of its initial flow into the pocket l, from which it is drawn through the passage 6 in the mouth or outer section of the stem. At a suitable point in its flow a stream of air is injected into the stream of smoke in such a direction as to retard to a greater or less degree dependent on the volume of air, the flow of smoke and also to insure a thorough commingling of the air with the smoke. By reason of this thorough intermingling of the air with the smoke and retardation there will be such a reduction of temperature of the smoke as to effect a considerable condensation of the nicotin vapors.
It will be observed that the port 5 and chamber 8 are considerably larger than the passage 1 so that an opportunity is afforded for a considerable expansion of the smoke. It is preferred that the air should be injected into the smoke just prior to or at the time of such expansion, which will result in a further reduction of temperature.

the passage 1 is extended through the rear end of the stem section 2, such extension forming the air passage 10. The flow of air through this passage may be regulated in any suitable manner as for instance by shifting the stem sections toward or from each other thereby varying the distance between the rear end of the bowl section 2 and the front end of the mouth section of the stem. It is preferred however to employ a pin 21 screwed into the front end of the mouth section of the stem and having a conical end portion which will project into the passage 10. As the portion of the pin at the base of the conical point is of the same size as the passage 10, the flow of air through the passage can be regulated by screwing the pin in or out.

As shown in Figs. 3 and t the main smoke passage is connected to the forward end of the expansion pocket or chamber 4, and the air is admitted through a passage in the plug 7 which closes the rear end of the chamber 1-. Air enters the passage 22 through. a port 23 so located that it can be partially or entirely covered by the rear end of the bowl section 2 of the stem. In lieu of boring a hole in the plug 7 a longitudinal groove 24 may be bored in its surface as shown in Fig. 5. In Fig. 5 the air inlet passage 25 is formed wholly in the bowl section 9 of the stem, and the flow of air is regulated by a needle valve 21. It will be observed that the jet of air enters in opposition to the movement of the smoke but a little to one side of the axis of such stream of smoke and hence will tend to cause a portion of the smoke to flow forward. As a result of the injection of air in this manner there will be two oppositely flowing streams, one moving forward due to the action of the air jet and the other flowing back but diverted laterally by the action of the stream created by the air et.
in the form shown in Figs. 1 and 9. the cooling due to the jet of air is supplemented by that due to the expansion of the smoke while in the other constructions the eXpansion at least begins prior to the addition of the air.
I claim herein as my invention:
1. In a pipe, the combination of a bowl and stem, said stem having a smoke passage extending from the bowl, and an expansion chamber of relatively large capacity and connected at one end to the smoke passage, a stem section detachable from the bowl stem, and having a passage connected to the expansion chamber adjacent to the end opposite the smoke inlet, one of the stem portions having an air inlet so arranged that the infiowing air jet will impinge upon the smoke flowing through the expansion chamber at such an acute angle as to retard the movement of the smoke and insure a thorough commingling of the smoke and air.
2. In a pipe, the combination of a bowl and stem, said stem having a smoke passage extending from the bowl, an expansion chamber of relatively large capacity connected to said smoke passage, a removable section having an outlet passage and adapted to be connected to the chamber at a point distant from the smoke inlet, an air inlet passage arranged to deliver air into said passage in a direction to retard the flow of smoke therethrough, and means for regulating the inflow of air.
3. In a pipe, the combination of a bowl and stem, said stem having a smoke pas, sage extending from the bowl, an expansion chamber of relatively large capacity connected to said smoke passage, a removable stem section having an outlet passage extending from the chamber, an air inlet passage arranged to deliver air into said chamher in a direction to retard the flow of smoke therethrough, and a valve adjustably mounted in the removable stem section for regulating the inflow of air.
