SPREADER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES HATTER, citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Fairfield and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spreaders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain improvements in spreaders and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with hay or the like; and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the same may be employed with convenience and facility for conveying hay or the like from a wagon to a hay mow or other dumpin place.

The invention consists in tie details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved spreader whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim.

In order that my invention may be the better understood, I Willnow proceed to de scribe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein is set forth a view in elevation of a device constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention.

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a ring or eye member adapted to afford a convenient means whereby the device may be coupled or connected with the hoisting rigging (not shown) which may be of any form of construction desired.

2 denotes the spreader or cross bar of pre determined length operatively connected to the ring or eye member 1 by the link members 3, the lowermost of such members being secured to the extremities of such spreader or cross bar 2, as is believed to be clearly ob- Specification of Letters Patent.

As herein disclosed, the extremities of the spreader or cross bar 2 are directed through the rigid eye members 4 formed 011 the lower link members 3 and also suitably engaged with the eye members 4: are the fork members 5 of the conventional double-harpoon type, certain of the prongs of each of such forks being provided with the triplevcrs 6 operatively connected one with the other whereby they will operate in unison. The connected trip lovers of each of the forks are operatively connected to an extremity of a flexible member 7 common to both and suitably engaged with such flexible member 7 is a trip rope 8 of predetermined length whereby it will be seen that both of the forks 5 may be manipulated to drop or deposit their load in unison.

As herein disclosed, I have the trip rope 8 loosely connected with the flexible member 7 as ismdicated at 9, the independent move ment of such connection 9 being limited by a suitable stop 10 positioned at either side of the connection 9, as is believed to be clearly shown in the accompanying drawings.

As is believed to be obvious, the cross bar or spreader 2 serves to maintain the forks 5 in fixed spaced relation whereby they may be employed with greater convenience in engaging the hay or the likev whereby, as is thought to be obvious, the hay or the like may be lifted from the wagon and dropped or deposited in the mow with greater convenience and facility.

From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a spreader constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and by reason of the effectiveness with which it performs its requisite functions, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formatidn of hay forks ,pivotally engaged with the eyes 10 the several parts herein shown in carrying of the links.
