Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 9, 1914.
Application filed December 15, 1913. Serial No. 806,698.
1 b all whom it may concern Be it known that we, SAMUEL SEGAL and Jason FRIEDMAN, citizens of the United States, and residents, respectively, 01" Revere, in the county of Suffolk and State of Mas sachusctts, and of Malden, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Fountain-Brush, of which the following is a specification.
()ur invention relates to fountain brushes and the like and particularly to improvements in fountain brushes for use inpolishing floors, the object of our invention being to provide an improved article of this character so constructed as to provide for convenient and ready control of the delivery of the polishing fluid while the user is manipulating the brush.
Our improved polishing brush comprises a body or head provided with a reservoir for holding a supply of the polishing material, said reservoir having one or more outlets arranged to discharge the material upon the underside of the body, and said outlet, or outlets, being controlled by one or more valves. The outlet controlling valves are connected with a trigger or finger piece movably mounted on the brush handle in position to be controlled and operated by the hand of the person using the brush so that the user can control the discharge of material while he is manipulating the brush.
A feature of our invention also consists in rn-oviding means, preferably a spring latch, For holdingthe valve or valves in their open positions when the finger piece is shifted by the user to open the valves, and in provid ing means, preferably a second finger opcrated member, for operating the latch to free the valves when it is desired to close the latter.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is a side view, mainly in section, of a fountain brush embodying one form of our invention. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Flg. 3 1s a section on 1111s of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4: is a section on line 4L- 1 of Fig. 3.
The head or body 1 of our improved fountain brush is heuein shown as a sheet metal box whose interior 2 serves as a reservoir for a supply of polishing fluid. The bot-tom 3 of body 1 is exteriorly recessed to receive the butt ends of the bristles 4 which may be secured within said recess in any manner. Through the said bottom 3 ports 5 are made.
The ports 5 at their upper ends register with ports 6 provided through the bottom 3 and upon the upper or inner side of bottom 3 each port 6 is siu-roumled by an annular upstanding flange 7 surrounded by a valve 8. The two valves 8 are inverted rubber caps secured by rivets to the under side of a valve support 9, that is pivotally connected by a pmtlc 10 with bottom 3. A coiled spring 11 mounted on pintle 10 has one of its ends soldered to bottom 3 while its opposite end bears against support 9 in a manner to yleldingly hold the valves 8 closed on to their seats. The valves 8 seat upon the bottom 3 and being of comparatively soft rub her, fit themselves to the surface of said bottom so as to make a perfect closure. The flanges 7 serve as stops to limit the closing movement of support 9 so that the valves are not 1n uriousl v compressed by spring 10.
. The body 1 is made with a socket 12 with 1n which is fixed the lower end of a handle 13 formed with a central bore 141 communi eating at its upper end with a rectangular chamber 15. Within the chamber 15 is slidably mounted a trigger 16 provided with a finger piece 17 extending through a slot 18 to the exterior of handle 13. Trigger 16 is connected by a wire link 19 with support 9 so that when the user of the brush so desires he may open valves 8 by pulling upon finger piece 17, the movement of trigger 16 acting tl'irough link 19 to swing support 9 upward on pintlc '10. hen the valves are thus opened the bristles are supplied with polishing fluid from reservoir 2, while the bore 14:, chamber 15 and slot 18 serve to vent said reservoir so that the flow of the fluid is unretardcd. The reservoir 2 is supplied with the polishing fluid through a port 20 that is closed by a removable cover 21 screwed onto a threaded nipple 22.
In order to relieve the operator of the necessity of holding the valves 8 in their open positions we provide a spring latch or sear 23 within chamber 15 and form the adjacent end of trigger 16 with a shoulder or hook 24 and with a beveled end 25. When the trigger 16 is slid toward latch 23 to the limit of its movement in that direction the beveled end. 25 forces its way under said latch and the latter snaps in behind shoulder 24, thereby lockingthe valves in their open positions. \Vhen the operator desires to close valves 8 he presses inward upon a plunger 26 slidably mounted in handle 13 and the inner end of said plunger, which is arranged beneath latch 23, lifts the latter out of engagement wv'ith' shoulder 24 whereupon'the springll' swings support 9 downward and closes the valves. Latch 23 and shOulderQe'are separated sufliciently when valves 8 occupy their closed positions so that the trigger can be shifted back and forth to some extent Without engaging latch 23 to open and close the valves when desired. r What we claim is:
A "fountain'bru'sh comprising a hollow body adapted to'liold a supply of polishing inater ialfa' port extending through thebotoin" of said body; a valve Within the body for controlling said port a spring for yieldingly h'oldi'ng said valve in'its olose'd position; a connected atone end With said body and made With an internal longitudinal cavity; a link Within said cavity connected at one end" with -said valve; a triggenslidably mounted Within said handleand connected v Witli the other end of the link; a slot in the handle adjacent to the trigger; a finger piece on the trigger which extends throu h the slot to the exterior of the handle; a spring latch Within the handle'for engaging the trigger to lock the valve in'its open position,
and a latch operating nielnher carried by the K. LOUISE MoGoRn.
