To all 'whom it may concern: l

Be it known that I, KATE HUTTENHOW, citizen of the United States, residing at Marshalltown, in the county of Marshall and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cover-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

The object of the invention is toprovide a receptacle having a downwardly opening bottom or lower closure by means of which burnt matches and other Waste matter may be readily discharged, said bottom being preferably positioned a slight distance above the lower end of the receptacle to leave an air space between the bottom of the recep tacle and the table or other article of furL niture upon which the receptacle is placed, by which means injury to the furniture from the heat of the burning stubs contained in the receptacle is avoided.

With these and other objects in view, my invention will be more fully described,1illus trated in the accompanying drawings, and, then specifically pointed out `in the claim which is attached to and forms a part of this application.

In the drawings: Figure l is a perspective view of my improved receptacle; and, Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, the position of the swinging bottom, when open, being shown in dotted lines.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.

My improved receptacle is preferably formed of metal and may be made in any shape or size desired. The preferred embodiment which I have illustrated in the drawings, includes a cylindrical body member 10 having a closed upper end 11 and a swinging closure 12 hinged as at 13to the inner face of the body member 10 in such a manner that in closed position the receptacle is supported with its bottom in spaced` relation above the table or` other article upon which the receptacle is positioned, as best:

shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. In order to maintain this closure inclosed position, I have secured a strip of metal 141 upon the upper face of the closure l2 at a point diametrically opposite the hinge 13 and the outer end of this strip is bent upwardly and inwardly to form a hooked terminal 15. Slidably mounted through a suitable perforation 16 formed in the wall of the receptacle adjacent this hook is a rod 17, the inner end of which is bent downwardly and outwardly to form a hooked terminal 18 i adapted in one position to engage the hooked terminal 15 of the closure 12 and maintain the closure in raised position. A light helical spring 19 surrounds this rod and bears by one end against the outer face of the body member and is secured by its other end to the rod in such a manner as to normally hold the rod in extended position to lock the closure in place. A cylindrical casing 20 surrounds the spring 19 and is secured by one end tothe body member 10 and provided at its opposite end with an opening 21 through which the free end of the rod eX- tends. The free end ofthe rod is preferably provided with an enlarged head or knob 22 by means of which it may be more readily operated.

If the receptacle is to be emptied, it is held over any suitable waste receiver and the rod 17 is pushed inwardly against the action of the spring 19 to release the catch when the swinging bottom member l2 will open by gravity to discharge the contents of the receptacle. The bottom is then swung back to position and the rod released when the action of the spring will immediately cause the hooks 15 and 18 to engage each other and lock the bottom in place.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
