UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES' B. EGBERTS, 0F MOlDElETO, GALIFt-Nt.
SCRAPER.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, CHARLES B. Routiers, a citizen of the United States, residing` at Modesto, in the county oi' Stanislaus, State of aCalifornia, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Scrapers; and l do declare the following to be a clear, full, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a partot this application.
This invention relates to improvements in Scrapers and is particularly designed as a wheel scaper, the object of the invention being to produce a wheel scraper in which the wheels are adapted both to carry the load when the scraper is full and also to act as a substitute for runners new com* monly used when the sc'aper is being emptied.
A. further object is to produce an easy and eiective means for raising the scraper from scraping position onto the wheels when it is loaded and simultaneously closing the iront oit the scraper to prevent the dirt from talling out.
The invention then further embodies a quick and effective means tor throwing the scraper into dumping position andthen returning all oit' the parts to normal carrying or loading position as may be desired.
A still further object of the invention is to produce, in conjunction with the above mechanism, suitable adjustments for preventing the scraper from tipping too iar or become hard to handle and further to adjust it so as to spread the dirt thick or thin or in one heap or pile as may be desired.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly eil'ective for the purposes for which it is designed.
These objects, l accomplish by means ot such structure and relative arrangement ot the parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.
0n the drawings, similar characters oi. reference indicate corresponding1 parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the scraper as it appears in carrying position. Fig. 2 is a similar view as it appears in loading po- Specicaton of Letters Patent.

sition. Fig. 3 is a similar view as it appears in dumping position. Fig. l is a top plan view of the scraper.
ite'lerring now more particularly to the characters oi reference on the drawings, I first provide two carrying arms 1 provided with upwardly extending portions Q. In the outer ends ot the arms 1, as at 3, are normally carried turnable wheels Li. Just back of the points at which the arms 1 carry the wheels li, l pivotally mount a scraper on said arms 1 as at 6.
Flexibly connected with the sides oi the bowl 5, below the pivotal point t3, are draw bars 7 projecting a distance beyond the front oi the bowl and rigidly joined at their outer ends by means ot a cross beam 8. The member 8 is provided with a centra downwardly projecting supporting member 9 having a ruimer shoe 10 on its lower end. Frojecting upwardly from each draw bar 7 is a stop iraine or arm 11 for the purpose as will appear.
Fivotally mounted to each side of the `bowl 5 above the pivotal point 6, as at 12, is an arm 13, such arms having a cross bar 111.- carrying a closing door blade 15, capable, when the arms 13 move on 'their pivotal points 12, to drop down over the front ot the bowl 5 to form a closing door tor the same when it is in carrying position as shown in Fig. 1. Flhen in loading position as shown in Fig. Q, this door 15 is held normally open by means ot a chain 16 connected from the member 11i to a cross member -17 on the members 2. Said member 17 is provided withv an operating lever 18. ris will A,be noted when the scraper is in loading po sition as shown in F 2, the Wheels Li are held clear of the ground by means of the arms 1 and 2 being in their normal backward position. Then when the scraper is loaded and is to be. carried, the lever 18 is operated to move the arms 1 and 2 on the pivotal point G which brings the wheels 'i against the gro-und and then by continuing` the movement oit the lever 18, this will litt the bowl clear of the ground and cause it to be suspended and carried on the wheels i and shoe 1() as shown in Fig. 1. This same action of course loosens the chain 16 to permit the arms 13 to drop down to causethe door 15 to close in front ci the bowl to prevent the dirt from falling out. The arms 1 and 2 are also brought to a stationary iixed position to hold the bowl 5 suspended to ride on the wheels 4 by means of the member 17 coming in contact with the stop members 11. After the bowl is loaded and carried to the point desired as above set forth and it is desired to empty the same, a lever 19 on the back side of the bowl is operated to swing the bowl on its pivotal connections with the arms 1 to tip the said bowl to inverted position as shown in Fig. 3. lhen this action takes place, the cross member 14 rests against the member 7 and is prevented from moving with the bowl for this reason, hence, the said door 15 is opened away from the end of the bowl to permit the dirt to be emptied therefrom.
Pivotally mounted on the rear of the bowl 5 is a latch member 20. When the bowl is tilted to emptying position as shown, this latch member is thrown over and engages the member 17 as it rests on the members 11. Then when the bowl is pulled back to carrying position again, this latch also brings back the member 17 carrying the arms l and 2 and incidentally the wheels l into tie position shown in Fig. 2 and by means of the chain connection 16 the member lil Carrying the door 15 is also brought back to open position leaving the scraper ready to be filled again, lllhe latch Q0 when engaging the bar 17 of course locks the bowl 5 in the position in which it is dumped so that it cannot tilt forward or backward until brought back in the manner desired. Also by making the latch 20 adjustable the angle at which the bowl is held tilted in dumping position could be varied to spread the dirt in a thick or thin layer or pile as might be desired.
At the rear ends of the upper edges of the sides of the bowl, I provide stop members 21 and at the lower ends of the front edges of the sides of the bowl, provide stop members 22. These stop members, by striking` the members 7 limit the tilting movement of the bowl forward or backward respectively,
From the foregoing description it will readily appear that my improved scraper embodies the following features, namely, a scraper bowl, means for quickly and easily Vraising the bowl onto carrier wheels when loaded and closing the front of the scraper to hold the dirt therein, means for quickly tilting the bowl to emptying position and simultaneously opening the door and further a means for returning all of the parts to normal loading position again. From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that l have produced such a device as substantially fulfils the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred constructionL of the device, still in practice, such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention,
Having thus described my invention what l claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters VPatent is:
A. device of the character described comprising a scraper bowl, a pair of arms pivotally mounted on said scraper bowl and carrying wheels on their forward ends and a cross bar on their rear ends, draw bars pivotally mounted in said scraper bowl and being supported at their outer ends, an upwardly projecting stop member on said draw bars, means for moving said arms on their pivotal points to cause said cross bar to engage said stop member and to cause said wheels to engage the ground surface whereby said scraper bowl will be held suspended between said arms, a closure held normally away from the frontV of said scraper bowl but adapted to move in front thereof when the same is so suspended between said arms, means for tilting said scraper bowl on its pivotal connection with said arms to throw it to inverted emptying position, said closure engaging and being held from further movement by said draw bars when said bowl is so tilted to said inverted position, a chain connecting said crossbar and said closure, and a latch pivotally mounted on said bowl and adapted to engage said cross bar when said bowl is moved to said inverted position, as described.
ln testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
