' Letters Patent No. 109,828, dated December a, 1870.
IMPROVEMENTIN SEWI NG- -MACHIN ES.
The Schedule referred to in theseLettez-l Patent and making part of flielsaine.
To all "whom i'tmay concern; v
'Be. it known that I, T. A. MAGAULAY, ofthe town 'of Northampton, county of Hampshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved Sewing-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, andexact description' thereof, which will enable others skilled in the 'art to make and use the same, reference being had to My invention relates' .Firstly, to an improved construction of the diskplate which receives the mechanism of a crank-motion, (for which Letters Patent of the United States were granted to ine. March 1, 1864,) whereby greater the accompanying-drawing forming part of this specidurability is obtained, and consists of the projectingwings a and a, Figs. Hand III, so arranged that the parts an, Fig. III, form bearings for the pins 0 c, on which the links 1) b of tlieerank niovement, Fig. III
oscillate.
. Secondly, my invention relates to an improved thread-controlling device, andconsists of a lever, a, link '0, and adjustable fulcrum y, secured to the presser-bar'b'; F-ig'. IV,"-t-he needle-barguide'x, and two guides, a a bywhich the thread iscontroll'ed in making stitches, and the quantity delivered is regulated to suit'thick or thin goods. When thick goods are being sewed, the lever 10 is raised with the 'pres'ser,
and its range of 'motion changed to draw off more.
convenient port-ion'oi the machine, and made adjustable; the other eud to be actuated by the foot-bar as it rises andlowers when thick or-thiu goods are under it;- the controllinglever to be pivoted between the two ends. The object of this last arrangement is,
that should the rising of the presser-bar deliver more thread than canbeproperlycontrolled, the use of. a
lever will reduce'the action of the thread-lever and deliver'less thread than when the thread-lever rises the extent the foot bar rises;
Thirdly, myinventio'n consists of an improved mode of suspending the feed-wheel, and raising and lower: ing the same when it is desired. to sew thick or thin goods, and consists of .a cylindrical block, at, having a pin, 8, projecting longitudinally from one end, and lo cated at one side of the center of n.
At the other end of at is a laterally-projecting handle, t, that projects upward to the top of the table, within easy reach of the operator, and is provided with a scale, (see Fig. XIV) so that the wheel may be accurately raised or lowered. v
llhe feed-raising. and lowering device is supported in a -bea'ringor hub projecting from the under side of the bed-plate. Y
The feed-wheel and its connected devices are-supported on the pin 8, and when the block at is adjusted it is confined in position by a set-screw, m.
In Fig. 'IV an end view of the feed-raising device? ,n 's is shown.
The accompanying drawing illustrates the manner in which my invention is carried into efl'cct.
Figure Iisa longitudinal vertical view, showing my improved mariner of constructing the disk a, the feedraising and lowering deviee't 'n s, and set-screw m,'and
a side view of the thread-controllingmechanism u v y and guides a a v r v 1 Figure 1I 's a top view'of the disk-plate a and wing a, the wing being supported'on projection a from the disk it. I
vFigure III'is a face view of the same, showing the studs 0 c, supportedbythe .wing at and disk a and carrying the links I) b, the crank c, and pittnan r1. v 4 -1 i ure'. 1V shows a face view of the tln'ead-controlling mechanism at; y, and feed-lowering mechanism.- ltns. 1
Figure'Y, is ahorizontal section of the face-plate f, showing the link not the thread controlling mechan '1. The combination, with disk to and wing asap ported on projection aflof the pins an'd'links for oper-..
ating the needle-bar, substantially as described. 2. The combination, withthepresser-bar,of the adjustable block 3 lever 10, link 1', and guides a: a, a all suhstantially'as and for the purpose described.
.3. The device t n s for-raising and lowering the feed-wheel, when constructed as described, andcoma bined with the table and feed-wheel, as set forth.
4 The above specification of'my invention signed by me this 3d day of December, 1868. v I I 'T. A. MAOAULAY.
