Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known'that I, HERMANN GARTNER, a citizen of the German Empire, residing in Lintorf, near Dusseldorf, in said Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Nail Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a machine for the manufacture of wire nails and tacks with a clamping device located in alinement with the moving wire in front of the knife box and serving as head forming lower dies.
The novelty of the invention resides in the fact that the one-half head forming lower dies rests on the knife box and one-half of the knife box and the opposite half of the head forming lower dies are fixed upon the movable half of the knife box, whereby only two operating levers are necessary and owing to this arrangement both ordinary wire pins and also nails with long tapering shanks such as tacks, roofing nails and the like can be manufactured on this machine. Notwithstanding this arrangement of the tools, nails and tacks of different length may be manufactured, and to accomplish this the feed movement of the wire is obtained in two strokes by means of a cam plate with one fixed and one radially displaceable nose or protuberance, and the length of one of the strokes may be modified by adjusting the displaceable nose. In order to obtain the necessary quick return movement of the head forming die, the head is moved by the cooperation of a cam plate and a spring. Accordingly, if the spring should break, the cam plate will prevent the headdie from remaining in its pressing position and impeding the operation of the machine.
A constructional form of the machine embodying the invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawing, in which .Figure l is a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is an elevation in larger scale of the combined knife and jaw box; Fig. 5 a section along A-A of Fig. 4; Fig. 6 a section along 13-13 of Fig. 4:; Figs. 7 and 8 illustrate details of the knife box. Figs. '9 and 10 diagrammatically illustrate the present improved arrangement in two different positions.
I As shown in the drawing, the knife box a, made in two parts a a is provided with four knives b, and a plate c inserted in the knife box in front of the knives, which plate holds the tools Z) and this plate is secured in such a manner by screws 10 and 2, that the movement of one half of the knife box relatively to the other is assured. To render this possible, oblong slots 3 for screws 2 are provided in the knife box half a and round holes for screws 10 provided in the knife box half a making the former movable and the latter stationary. The plate 0 1s U-shaped, leaving a dove-tail guide d between its shanks for receiving the headforming jaws e, 7, which cooperate with the head die 9 to shape the nail head. Each one of the knives b may be moved in the usual manner in the respective box halves by means of their set screws, whereas only one f of the jaws e, f, moves during operation in the plate 0. The movable box half (4 together with its knives b and the jaw e are under the influence of a spring 4, Fig. 2. The jaw e isfirmly supported by the set screw it, while the jaw f supported in the guide slot (Z of the plate 0, is subjected to the action ofa lever 71 through a set screw 5, which lever is operated in the known manner by means of a cam plate 7 against which the lever is constantly pressed by a spring 6. The displacement of one half a of the box and of the cutters therein is produced in a similar manner by a lever is arranged on the other side of the machine and operated from the driving shaft, by the intermediary of a cam plate 8.
In the present invention as illustrated in Figs. 9 and 10, one jaw e is fixed'and the knife 6 is movable, while the counter jaw 9 is movable and the knife I) fixed. Precisely in the same manner as the knife I), the innermost edge of the head of the counter jaw e is located in the axis of the wire supplied, so that with the tool open, the wire is guided during its feed by the counter jaw 6 and the knife I)"; that is to say it is guided centrally thereby enabling the head to be correctly formed. When this has been effected, the movable counter jaw f moves back, so that the loose knife 72 in the succeeding pressing of the point can depress the shank of the nail to such an extent that the point of the nail becomes perfectly central.
Beneath the head die 9 which is located in front of the knife box a, and the jaw e and normally drawn back by the spring E,
is situated another cam plate 772-, which by means of a protuberance m after a given rotation, acts upon one arm of a bell crank lever 72, the other arm of which engages the head die by means of a ball joint. and pushes the head die f/ forward, against the action of the spring for the purpose of pressing the head. During the continued rota tion, the protuberance m enters the recessZ suitably provided in the head die 9 and d1- rectlv i'efurns the latter to its original positioin if this has not already been effected by the spring M. The cam plate an is provided with a protuberance m which acts 1n the usual manner upon the lever 0 depressed bv the sprin 0, whereby the lever 0 which reaches as far as the counter jaws, throws down the still adhering nail. On its lower part this conveyor lever r carries a roll s, the per1phcry of which is slightly off-set from 1t. Protuberances t, t of the cam plate a, mounted on the driving shaft, actuate the roll 3 during their rotation in such a manner that too conveyor lever r performs a rocking movement and thus feeds the wire. When the fixed protuberance t presses back the conveyor lever 1*, the cutter 32 produces the first wire feed, which can be regulated by the adjustable crank stud r in such a manner that after completing this partial feed movement, the wire protrudes from the plate 0 and its jaws e only to an extent necessary to provide material enough for the formation of the head. After the completion of the first feed movement the lever i presses the wire between the counter jaws c f, of the plate aandthe head forming die 9 is brought against 1t and forms the head. When the head forming die 9 springs back and the lever effects its return movement the conveyor lever r is struck by the protuberance 1, thereby causing it to rise again, whereby the wire is fed forward the second time a distance corresponding to the desired length of a nails The point of the nail is thereupon formed by the lever and the knife Z) in the knife box a. As soon as the nail is finished, pressed and the first feed movement of the next nail occurs, the finished nail which still adheres to the wire is separated from it by the action of the levers 0 and The lever 0 is thereupon returned to its normal position by the spring 0.
I claim:
A machine for making wire nails and pins, having a stationary knife carrier and a slidable knife carrier, knives in each of the carriers radiating from the axis of the wire, a frame situated in front of both and having positive connection with the stationary carrier, a pair of head forming dies in said frame, one of said dies being slidable and the other stationary in said frame during operation; and means for reciprocating said movable die and said slidable carrier.
2. A machine for making wire nails and pins, having a stationary knife carrier and a slidable knife carrier, knives in each of the carriers radiating from the axis of the wire, a frame situated in front of both and having positive connection with the stationary carrier, a pair of head forming dies in said frame, one of said dies being slidable and the other stationary in said frame during operation; a lever engaging with said movable die, a cam actuating said lever and a spring pressing said lever against said cam.
3. A machine for making wire nails and pins, having a stationary knife carrier and a slidable knife carrier, knives in each of the carriers radiating from the aXis of the wire, a frame situated in front of both and having positive connection with the stationary carrier, a pair of head forming dies in said frame, one of said dies being slidable and the other stationary in said fame durin operation; a spring engaging with said slidable carrier and tending to draw the carrier outward from the wire, a lever impinging at one end with said slidable carrier and a cam actuating said lever.

5. A machine for making Wire nails and pins, having a stationary knife carrier and a slidable knife carrier, a pair of knives in each of said carriers radiating from the axis of the Wire, a frame situated in front of said carriers and having positive connection with the stationary carrier, a pair of head forming dies, and a guide Way formed in said frame for said dles, one of said dies being slidable and the other stationary in said frame during operation, a head punching die in alinement with the axis of the Wire, and means for reciprocating said punching die; and other means for reciprocating said movable die and said slidable carrier.

A machine for making Wire nails and pins, having a stationary knife carrier and a slidable knife carrier, knives in each of the carriers radiating from the axis of the Wire, a frame situated in front of both and having positive connection with the stationary carrier, a pair of head forming dies in said frame, one of said dies being slidable and the other stationary in said frame during operation; and means for reciprocating said movable die and said slidable carrier, and a feed device for intermittently moving the Wire in the direction of the dies.

A machine for maldng Wire nails and pins, having a stationary knife carrier and a slidable knife carrier, knives in each of the carriers radiating from the axis of the wire, a frame situated in front of both and having positive connection with the stationary carrier, a pair of head forming dies in said frame, one of said dies being slidable and the other stationary in said frame during operation; and means for reciprocating said movable die and said slidable carrier, and a feed device for intermittently moving the Wire in the direction of the dies, said device comprising a Wire-holder and a slide therefor, said slide being actuated by cam action.

A machine for making Wire nails and pins, having a stationary knife carrier and a slidable knife carrier, knives in each of the carriers radiating from the axis of the Wire, a frame situated in front of both and having positive connection With the stationary car rier, a pair of head forming dies in said frame, one of said dies being slidable and the other stationary in said frame during operation; a spring tending to Withdraw said head punching die from said frame, and a lever engaging said punching die, and a cam for oscillating said lever.
