Be it known that I, WALTER E. TRENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reno, in the county of Washoe and State of Nevada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Separating Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
The hereinafter described invention relates to an improved apparatus for separating the solids from liquid and semi-liquid -matcrial generally, but more particularly such as sliines, pulp, pulverized ores and cyanid solutu'ms; the ob ect of the invention being to simplify the construction of such class of machinery, to materially reduce the expense incident to the construct-ion, operation and maintenance thereof, While at the same time securing a large Working area for the material to be treated and by so doing materially increasing the Working capacity.

These arms are strengthened and connected one to the other cireuinterentially by means 01 the ring plates or braces 10, and the opposing arms of the respective disks or plates 5 and (l are connected one to the other by means of the longitudinally disposed feed pipes 11, which pipes are closed at one end and each connected at the opposite end thereof by a branch pipe 12 extended from an annular launder 13 rigidly mounted on the drive shaft 7 and carried thereby. Material to be treated is supplied to the said launder 13 from any suitable source by means of a supply pipe 14 which is extended into the said launder through a feed opening 15 in the outer wall thereof, the liquid material admitted into the said hollow launder escaping therefrom successively, through the outlet openings 17 into the branch feed pipes 12, when the some are in a lowered posit-ion and entering into the feed pipes 11 from which it escapes through a series of discharge outlets 18 'fOIlllQLl therein. These outlets 18 may be varied in size in accordance with the material to be treated, and the purpose of this discharge is to supply the requisite material or charge of the semiliquid material into the trays or pans for the separation of the solid portions therefrom.

These trays or filtering puns are preferably scoop shaped and so mounted as to normally lie in a horizontal position, the swinging action of the said trays or puns being similar in all respouts to the ears or buckets of a Ferris "wheel, in fact, the entire rotatable structure may be treated as to construction and operation as a Ferris wheel structure.
Within each of the swinging trays or filtering pans 19 is secured a lilter, consisting of a suitable frame 20" composed of perforated pipes, which pipe frame is covered by a filtering medium or bloth 20*. The bottom layer of the filtering cloth for each filter or. filter bed is given a coating of any suitable compound to render the same water-proof,
and from one end section of the pipe frame tlli 20 is extend 4 through the trunnion 15) of the swingin trays or pans 13 a tubular extension 21, which is connected by a running joint 22 with the outer end of a. suction pipe 22". These pipes at their inner end connect with the hollow end section 22 of the shaft 7, Fig. 3 of the drawings, with which is connected by a stuiiing gland 23 a suitable suction motor or air pump, not shown. Each filter tray or pan 19 is provided adjacent its rear upper edge with a perforated water spray pipe 93* each of which is con-' neeted by an extension 24 passing through the trunnion 20 by a running joint 24: with a-branch pipe 24 leading from the hollow end section of the shaft 7, the said end section receiving water under pressure from a supply pipe 25 connected thereto by a stuffing gland 25. It will be understood that air under pressure instead of water may be admitted through the pipe 24 and itsconnections onto the upper surface 01'' the cloth 20* of the filter within each tray or, pan 19, although preference is given' to water; and it will be understood that each pipe 24: is connected to its spray pipe 23 and each of the suction pipes 22 connected to its tray or pan 19 by a running joint in order that the said trays or pans may be free to swing in order to maintain a horizontal position during the rotation of the frame structure in a vertical plan.
' The frame structure is slowly rotated through the medium of a worm 26 on a power shaft 26 meshing with a gear 27 secured to one end of the drive shaft 7, power being imparted to the shaft 26' in any suitable manner. Each of the suction pipes 22 is provided with a cut-off valve 28, tlie'stem thereof carrying a star cam 28 to be within the sphere of the spaced lugs 29 and 29. When the star cam 28 engages with the lug 29 during the rotation of the filtering struc ture, the valve 28 is gradually thrown to cut-oil the suction through the pipe 22', and when the said star cam is brought into engagement with the lug 29, the. same is thrown to open the said valve. Each of the branch water or air supply pipes 24 is also provided with a controlling valve 30, the stemprojecting therefrom carrying a star cam 30, which when placed into engagement with the spaced lugs 31 and 32 is gradually thrown to open and close the said valve.
The water ejected onto the filter bed from the spray pipe 23 lubricates the upper surface of the filtering cloth in order that the cake formed on the filtering medium within that-ray 01: pan 19 may readily discharge there from on the said filtering tray being swung downwardly as the same approaches the discharge hopper 32, into which the cake is discharged successively from the filtering pans and removed fromgthe said means of the endless conveyer 33 situated in the bottomlof the said hopper and on which the cakes are deposited.
In operation, the filtering trays are successively filled as carried'in the present case below the point A by means of the feed supply pipes 11, which continue to discharge material into the filtering trays until.
the same are carried above the level of the point A, when the feed of material ceases.

The described operation is successively carried out with each of the series of swinging filtering pans of the rotatable structure, the operation of the filtering pans being independent of each other. The filtering operation for the-semi-liquid material iscarried on as a continuous operation, the solids deposited in each filtering tray being thorougly washed prior 'to the discharge therefrom of the cake formed therein and all the liquid is withdrawn through the vacuum ch amber a of the filter prior to the discharge of the formed cake from the filtering trays.

Having thus fully described my invention what is claimed as new and desired to be protected by Letters Patent isz- 1. in an apparatus for the described pur pose, the combination with an open frame mounted for rotation. in a vertical. plane, of a plurality of horizontally disposed swing lug" filter trays or pans suspended Within said frame, means for maintaining each tray in horizontal position during the rotation of the frame, a filter medium held in each. of said trays,'an annular launder carried by the frame, a plurality of feed devices extended from said launder tor successively feeding solution to he treated into said pans during a portion or the rotary movement of the rotatable frame, valved controlled suction means connected with each filter tray for drawing liquid through the filter medium thereof from the solution Within the trays during a portion ot the iirames rotation, valved controlled Water supply means for admitting Water for lubrication onto the filtering medium of each tray during a stoppage of the suction means, devices for successively tilting-or swinging the trays to discharge the cake therefrom, and mechanism for imparting rotation to the frame structure.

In an apparatus for the described purpose, the combination with an open frame iounted for rotation in a vertical plane, of a plurality of horizontally disposed swing-- int: trays mounted Within and carried by said frame, a lilter secured Within each of the trays, a supply launder rotatable with the frame structure, devices extended from said. launder for independently supplying material to be treated to the said trays, independent controllable means for each tray for withdrawing the liquid from the material therein through the filter and applying a Water supply to the upper surface or" the said filter, mechanism for imparting rotation to the frame of the apparatus carrying the swinging trays, and devices for successively tilting the said trays during the rotary movement of the frame for the discharge of the cake therefrom;

In an apparatus for the described purpose, the combination with an open rotatable frame structure mounted for rotation in. a vertical plane, of a drive shaft to which the same is secured, a plurality of horizontally disposed filter trays 'journaled Within said frame circumferentially, means for .maintaining each of the filter trays in horizontal position during the rotary movement of the frame, a filter secured within each of the filter trays, a supply launder rotatable I with the frame, a plurality of devices extending from said launder for independently supplying to each of said trays during a portion of the fraines rotation material to be treated,.a valve controlled pipe leading from each filter, means for connecting each of said pipes with a source of suction, devices for successively actuating the valve of the controlled pipes for cutting off and opening the suction through said pipe during the rotary movement of the frame structure, means for tilting the filter trays for the discharge of the cake therefrom, and mechanism for imparting rotation to the frame structure.

In an apparatus for the described purpose, the combination with an openframe structure mounted for rotation in a vertical plane, of a plurality of horizontally disposed swinging filter trays mounted circumferen- T tially vvithin the said frame structure, means" for maintaining each filter tray in horizon,
'tal position during rotation of the open frame, a filter head in each of said trays, independent controllable suction means extended from each of said. filters, a-launder for the material to be treated carried by the rotatable frame, a plurality of devices extended from said launder and independently connected to each of the filter trays for supplying material to be treated to the said filter trays, means for tilting the said trays during a portion of the lrames rotation for the discharge of the formed cake therefrom, and mechanism for imparting continuous rotation to the frame structure.
