NON-REFILLABLE BOTTLE.

To all whom it may concern: i
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. Burns, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Asbury Park, in the county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Refillable Bottles, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to bottles, jugs, jars and similar vessels, and the object thereof is to provide a vessel of this class which having been once filled and emptied of its contents cannot be refilled or reused.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my invention are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the Views, and in which Figure 1 is a central vertical section of a top-portion of a bottle provided with my improvement; Fig. 2 a similar view but showing parts in a different position, and; Fig. 3 a cross section on the line 83 of Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention, as shown in the drawing, I provide a bottle a having a neck Z2 which is of the usual form except that, in the construction shown, the bottom portion 6 of said neck is slightly enlarged and provided on its inner side with vertical grooves 72 and at the-bottom of the enlargement Z2 is an inwardly directed annular ledge or shoulder c forming an annular valve seat and a central port or passage 0 and at the top thereof is an annular ledge or shoul der 0 That part of the neck between the annular ledge or shoulder c, and the annular ledge or shoulder 0 forms a valve chamber or space in which is placed, as hereinafter described, a valve or valve device, but the construction of the bottom part of the neck 6 is immaterial, except that the grooves b are preferably formed therein for the purpose herein described, and the diameter of the top portion of the neck must be such as to permit of the passage, downwardly there through, of the valve or valve device, as herein described.
Placed on the annular valve seat is a gas ket (Z of cork or other suitable material, and placed on the gasket d is a vertically movable cylindrical valve device 6 having a projecting annular bottom rim or flange 0 and a similar top rim or flange c and said valve device is free to move vertically in the space in the walls of which the grooves I) are formed, and wound on the body portion of said valve device is a fine spring f which normally bears on the bottom flange or rim 6 and normally holds said valve device seated on the gasket (l, and the top portion of the spring f is provided with a laterally directed member f adapted to bear on the bottom of the ledge or shoulder 0 and in the form of construction shown, the laterally directed part or member f of the spring f is provided with an upwardly directed finger f for this purpose. I also place in the neck 5 a guard g intended to prevent interference with the operation of the valve device 6 as hereinafter described, and said guard, in the form of construction shown, consists of a transverse concavoconvex diaphragm or partition 9 the rim of which is provided with a dependingskirt g in which is formed an annular groove in "which is placed a spring ring and the inner walls of the neck of the bottle are provided just above the space in which the valve device 6 is movable with an annular groove 5 to receive said spring ring. The part g? of the guard is provided with radial slits g forming corresponding sectoral parts 9, and one wall of each of the slits 9 or one edge of each of the sectoral parts is depressed, as shown at and this construction, while permitting the contents of the bottle to fiow out, as
hereinafter described, and also prohibit the insertion of wire or other instrument in the effort to interfere with the operation of the valve device and the guard will, as will be seen, also aid in preventing the removal of the valve or Valve device from the neck of the bottle.
In the use of my improved bottle or other vessel of this class, the vessel is first filled with the desired contents after which the valve device 6 is inserted into and passed downwardly through the neck until it rests in the position shown in Fig. 1, in which position it is held by gravity, and also by the spring f. The guard g is then inserted into the neck, and said neck may be closed by the usual cork or stopper.
When it is desired to empty the bottle, or discharge a portion of its contents, the cor: or stopper is removed and the bottle is inverted or tilted in the usual manner, and the valve device 6 will drop forward or into the position shown in Fig. 2, when the contents of the bottle will flow out through the neck, and this operation may be continued or repeated until the bottle or vessel is emptied of its contents.
Vhen the bottle is held in an upright position, the port or passage 0 is closed by the valve device 0, and noliquids can be poured into the bottle and the bottle cannot be refilled.
The spring f is preferably just strong enough to hold the valve device 6 seated when the bottle is inverted, and no liquids can be forced into the bottle when held in such position. The valve device 6, however, may be made to serve as a float, in which case, saidvalve device will rise and close the port or passage 0 if an attempt be made to fill the bottle by forcing liquids thereinto, while said bottle is held in an inverted position, but I prefer to make the spring f suflicient-ly strong to hold the valve device 0 seated when the empty bottle is inverted, as in this case, any appreciable amount of liquid in the bottle would open the valve device when the bottle is inverted or tilted and permit said liquids to flow out will be readily understood.
It will be understood that my invention is not limited to the particular form of the guard 9 herein shown and described, and any preferred device of this class may be employed.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent is 1-. A bottle or similar vessel provided with a neck in the bottom of which is: an
annular valve seat, said neck being also provided above said valve seat with vertical being freely movable in that portion of the neck in which saidgrooves are formed, and
the body portion of said valve device being less in size than the end portions thereof, and a spring wound on the body portion of said valve device and'having a projecting member operating in' connection with apart of the neck of the bottle to hold the valve device seated, said neck of the bottle being also provided with a guard which is: secured therein above the valve device.

A- bottle or similar vessel provided with a neck in the bottom of which is an annular valve seat, said neck being also provided above said valve seat with an annular shoulder forming in connection with said valve seat a valve chamber, a cylindrical valve device placed in said valve chamber and adapted to rest on said valve seat, and freely movable in said chamber, a spring connected with said valve and one end of which bears on said shoulder, and passage ways between the valve and the walls of the valve chamber.
