Specification of Letters Patent.
CLEANER FOR WIND-SHIELDS 0F AUTOMOBILES.
Application filed May 9, 1912. Serial No. 696,196.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE M. LEoLow, a citizen of the United States, residing at McKenzie, R. F. D. No. 1, in the county of Covington, State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cleaners for Wind-Shields of Automobiles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others-skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in cleaners for automobile wind shields or the like.
One object of the invention is to provide a simple and cheap cleaning device which can be thrown into-and out of operation while the machine is in movement.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and with particular reference to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a wind shield and a portion of a dash board showing the wind shield attached thereto, Fig. 2 is a side elevation, Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the line H of Fig. 1, Fig. 5 is an enlarged cross sectional view of the cleaning member on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 6 is a vertical section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 4.
Referring particularly to thedrawings,10 represents the dash board of an automobile and 11 the frame of the wind shield. The frame 11 is secured to the dash board 10 by means of a number of the clamps 12 as shown, These clamps are placed on the dashboard so that the shanks rest on the upper edge the eof, the lower edge of the frame of the shield resting on the upper portions of the shanks between the heads. The screws 17 are then turned against one face of the frame 11 and dash board 10 so that the frame and dash board are securely clamped be tween the heads of the clamps.
In the upper portion of the frame 11 is arranged a pane of glass 19, a handle or knob 20 being secured near one edge of the glass by a screw. Secured to the frame on each side of the opening is a circular strip 21 which holds the glass pane within the opening. Formed through these strips and the frame at 9 r 1e side of the opening is a smaller opening 22 and through this open- Patented May 19, 1914.
ingpasses the spring-pressed bolt "23, said bolt having a thumb-piece 24 on one end for rotating the same. Rigidly secured to the bolt by the key 25", is a flanged-member 25- having an arm 25 integrally formed therewith and extending out over the glass. To this arm is secured a piece of sheet metal 26, the lower edge of whlch is beveled as at 27, to form aknife edge and is engaged against the surface of the glass. The upper portion of the metal strip is doubled longitudinally on itself as at 28, and has secured therein a piece of rubber, felt, or the like, which also bears against the face of the glass. Secured onone of the strips 21 over the opening 22 is an apertured plate 30, which is provided with a raised rib 31 having formed therein four equally spaced notches 32, for the reception of lugs 33 formed on the head of the bolt 23.
It will be noted that the spring on the bolt 23 will normally draw the arm 25 toward the frame and the glass. In normal inoperative position the arm 25 hangs downwardly, at one side of the frame with the lugs 33 engaged in 'the "horizontally arranged notches 32, and when it is desired to clean the glass, the thumb piece 24 is grasped and the bolt 23 pushed inwardly and rotated, to move the arm 25 to a position across the glass pane. When the thumb-piece is released, the spring will draw the arm toward the glass so that the scraper and wiper will engage thereagainst. The
handle 20 is then grasped and the glass pane rotated. The knife edge will scrape the glass and the wiper clean and polish the same. This can be quickly and easily done, even while the vehicle is running at full speed.
f What isclaimed is:
1. An attachment for cleaning rotatable window panes comprising an arm for. attachment to the frame of the pane and movable horizontally toward and away from the pane, and pivotally into and out of operative position,a cleaning material in the arm e11- gaging the pane, rotating the member, and means for holdin the arm in operative position at times, an at times in inoperative position.
2. An attachment for-cleaning rotatable window panes comprising an arm for pivotal attachment to the frame of the pane and movable toward and away from the pane, a scraper on the arm, a cleaning maa handle in the same for material in the socket of the socketed member, an apertured plate carried by the frame,
and lugs on the pivot of the said arm for 15 engagement in the apertures of the plate to hold the arm in operative osition.
In testimony whereof, I a x my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
