COALING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 24, 1913.
Patented May 19, 1914. serial No. 769,677.
To all tir/tom 'it' may concern lie it known that l, Daman HILLEM'AN, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing' at llVellston, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cooling' Devices, of which the following is a specification.
lhe invention relates to an apparatus particularly designed for delivering coal to the tenders of traveling' trains, the invention comprehending specifically a structure by which the coal is automatically delivered to the tender in the travel of the latter' beneath the bins.
The main object of the present invention is the provision of a coal delivery apparatus including' a series of bins arranged lengthwise of and above the track, each bin having a plurality of delivering' sections adapted to be normally held in bottom forming position, a slide operated by the travelingl train and normally locking' the sections in position to complete the bottom of the bin, serving' when operated to release said sections for the delivery of the coal by gravity.
rlhe invention in its preferred form of details will b-e described in the following' specification, reference being' had particularly to the accompanying' drawings, in which z- Figure l is a plan of the improved coal delivering` apparatus. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with the dumping` sections locked in position to form a bottom for the bin. Fig. 3 is a similar view with one of the locking' slides in released position and the dumping sections in discharge position. F ig'. a is a side elevation illustrating' the relation of the coal delivery apparatus to the trael, and showing' means for operating' the slide. Fig'. 5 is a transverse section on the line 5-5 of Fig'. l. Fig'. 6 is a longitudinal section on the line G- of l? l..
Referring' particularly to the accompanying drawings, the improved delivery apparatus comprises a series of bins l including' side and end walls 2 and 3, the bins being' supported on a platfoi'm 4 arranged above the track 5 on a suitable framework 6.
'lhe bins are arranged in longitudinal alinement and are each wholly independent, being preferably provided in series as shown, in order that a number of trains may receive coal therefrom without the necessity of recharging' the bin. The bottom of each bin is made up of a plurality, preferably two, dumping sections 7, each having' a length approximately one-half the length of the bin and a width corresponding to the distance between the side w lls of the bin. Each dumping' section is pivotally mounted between side walls of the bin on a shaft S, said shaft being secured to the section adjacent one end thereof, as shown. rlhe shafts are preferably arranged adjacent similar ends of the dumping` sections, that is the shaft of one dumping' section will be secured thereto adjacent the end wall 3 of the bin while the shaft of the remaining' dumping' section will be secured thereto adjacent the center of the bin. By this construction the dumping' sections tilt in the same direction in operation and therefore avoid the possibility of binding' under the load. The shorter end of each dumping' section is provided with a weight 9 serving' to counter-balance the long'er end of the section, so that when free to operate, the sections resume a horizontal or bottom forming' position. The ends of the shafts 8 project beyond the side wall 2 of the bin, and are provided with locking' members l0 rigidly secured to the shaft. Said members are of rectangular form having' their major length corresponding' and in alineinent with the dumping' section, and are arranged on the shaft so that they are in spaced relation from the side wall of the bin.
To the side wall of the bin in alineinent with the locking members are fixed trachways l1 which trackways include guiding' sections 12 secured to the sides 2 by reduced web portions, the guiding' sections corresponding' in width and height to the similar dimensions of the locking' members.
A slide is arranged for cooperation with the tracliways including a body 13 formed with a longitudinally extending' channel 14tof a size to receive and cooperate with the trachways 1l, the entrance to said channel through the inner side of the slide snugly fitting' the web of the track way to prevent separation of the slide and traclrway. The slide is also preferably provided with antifriction rollers l5 which bear upon appropriate portions of the tra'clr in the movement of the slide, whereby to insure easy movement and avoid undue friction. As the slide and channel are of a size and shift to cooperate with the trackways, it will obviously so cooperate with the locking members 10 when the latter are alined with the trackway. The slide is of a length exceeding the distance between the proximate ends of the trackways 11, so that the slide is always in cooperation with one or the other trackway. Bepending from the slide at each end is a standard 16, which is preferably braced from the body by a brace 17.
The coal car is provided with hand operated lever 18 pivoted on the side thereof and connected to a trip lug 19 mounted in a recess 2O on the inner side of the car, the operation of the lever serving to project the lug above the car and into the path of the standard 1G of the slide. or to withdraw the lug beyond the possibility of coperation with the standard.
ln use, the slide bar is moved longitudinally of the trackways until it embraces both of the locking members 10 of the dumping section and by reason of the formation of said members, said slide will hold the dumping sections against movement toward dumping position. As the train approaches, which is to receive a load of coal, the lever 1S thereon Vis operated to project the trip 19 above the car. As the train advances said trip will engage one of the standards 1G and in the forward travel of the train move the slide lengthwise the trackway and free the locking members 10. The dumping sections, by reason of the load sustained, will immediately move to dumping position and discharge coal into the car, it being understood that the parts are so proportioned that the car moves beneath the dumping sections as the latter are released.
By providing a series of bins lengthwise the track it is obvious that a number of trains can receive a load of coal Without the necessity of continually recharging a particular bin and furthermore I contemplate any single track structure and arrangement of alternate bins so that they may be operated by trains traveling in opposite directions.
IThe various parts of the structure are to be constructed of substantial material which will stand the usage to which such devices are ordinarily put, and when so constructed will automatically deliver to a traveling train a load of coal from a particular bin without the necessity of stopping the train or other action by the crew except the adjustment of the lug 19. Any means may be provided for restoring the slide to locking position, such for example, as a cable or rod, it being understood that the dumping sections automatically return to normal position after having discharged their load, by virtue of which the locking members 10 are automatically positioned to receive the slide when it is returned to set or operative position.
That is claimed is 1.
