The conveyor chain 8 is supported on suitable sprockets 9 and 10 arranged at the ends of the conveyor way. See Fig. V.
The links carryin the carton frames or carriers are provide with supports 11 which engage grooves in the sides of the way memrs to support the frames or carriers in an upri ht position, while the cartons carried there y are acted upon by the carton folding and sealing mechanism. The structural details ofthe conveyor way and these guides or supports are preferably those described in my application for patent on carton sealing machine, filed January 27, 1912, Ser. No. 673,723, and as such details form no part of my present invention I do not further illustrate or describe the same herein.
Carton forms or carriers 12, and flights or carriers 13, are mounted on the carrier chain in an alternating relation, the forms 12 being the forms on which the cartons are formed and carried through the sealing mechanism, while the flights or carriers 13 are the carriers which the filled cartons are carried through the sealing mechanism.
The forms 12 are referably open frames provided with per orat-ions 14 in their outer ends so that the cartons may be ejected by means of compressed air, the sprocket 10 being provided with a nozzlelike tooth adapted to engage the links on which the forms 12 are mounted. This sprocket is connected by the pipe 15 to the pressure tank 16 which is supplied with air through the pump 17.
The ejecting mechanism is that described and claimed in my application for patent referred to and as its details form nopart of this invention, I do not illustrate or de scribe the same herein.
The sealed cartons are discharged at the rear of the machine into the delivery conveyer, designated generally by the numeral 18. See Fig.1.
I will first describe the carton making mechanism and then the sealing of the cartons, as the end flap closing and scaling mechanism employedin making the cartons is also utilized for sealing the filled cartons.
The carto blanks having been previously slit to provi e flaps and scored to facilitate folding as shown in Fig. XXII are placed in a" stack upon the tab e 19 in position so that the lower edge of the top blank of the stack on the table is engaged by the feed wheels 20. Tie structure illustrated is pro vidcd with four of these feed wheels. The feedwheels '20 are provided with friction lugs 21, see Figs. V and XI, positioned so that a blank is fed at each revolution of the feed wheels. These friction lugs are preferably rubber blocks arranged in suitable seats 22 provided therefor in the wheel rims on the shaft and adjustably supported in the seats by means of the screws 23 which engage the follower disks 24. In fi ont of the table and substantially in theplane thereof so that the blanks readily pass from the table thereto, is a friction feed plate 25 having a rubber facing 26. This feed plate is positioned to shpport the blanks at the point of engagement of the friction lugs 21 of the feed wheels therewith. The feed plate is carried by the arms 27 on the rod 28 extending across the frame, the plate bein ad justably mounted on these arms. This adjustment is secured by mounting the plate on the pivots 29 on the arms and providing screws'30 which are arranged through cars 31 on the plate and engage threaded lu 32 on the arms 27. By means of this adgustment, the friction may be very accurately adjusted so as to secure a ositive and accurate feed for the blanks. T e blanks are delivered by the feed wheels between the feed belts 33 and 34. The feed-belts 34 are arran ed on pulleys and 36. The pulleys are disposed below the feed wheels. The feed belts 33 are carried by the pulleys 37 which are mounted on the shaft 33 of the feed wheels and the puleys 39 on the shaft 40 arranged parallel with the shaft 41 for the pulleys 36. The
pulleys and 37 are so disposed that the bolts 33 travel over the bolts 34 as they pass over their supporting pulleys 36 to receive thecarton blanks from the feed wheels and deliver the same to the forms.
To support the feed belts between their pulleys and secure the desired amount of friction on the feed belts, I provide a pressure means consisting of pairs of plates 44 and 45, the plates 44 being carried by cross bars 46 arranged within the bolts 34, the plates being carried by blocks 47 -adjustably mounted on the cross bars 48 arranged within the belts 33 by means of the adjusting screws 47, see Figs. V and XII, the belts passing between the plates as clearly shown in Fig. XIL- By this means, the belts are supported between the pulleys at the point wherethey engage the carton blanks and their frictional engagement with the blanks may be nicely regulated so that the blanks are fed positively. The blanks are also provided with belt tighlcucrs 49.
The feed wheels and feed belts are driven from the shaft 43 which connected by the sprocket chain 50 and the sprocket wheel 51 on the shaft 43 to the sprocket wheel 52 The driving shaft 54 is provided with tight. and loose pulleys and 56. The shaft 54 is connected by the shaft 169 and the gears 170,171, 172 and 173, the sprocket 174 and sprocket chain 57 to the sprocket 58 on the shaft 59 at the rear of the machine. The conveyor driving sprocket 9 is mounted on this shaft 59. The shaft 59 is connected by the sprocket chain the flap turner 65,

By these connections, the feed wheels and feed belts are properly timed with the conveyer so that the carton blanks are delivered to the forms 12 and are carried along there by through the folding and sealing mechanism.
As the blanks are carried down by the feed belts, the securing flap G4 is engaged by see Figs. 1V and XXL-and folded upon the bar like-sup- -po1tt66 so as to presentthe face of the. flaps to the glue wheel 67. The support 60 sup ports the flap while it is acted upon by the glue wheel. 'When the securing flap is released it swings out again as there nothing to retain it in the position in which it receives the'glue. The glue tank 08 is arranged to properly deliver the glue to the glue wheel. The glue wheel is driven by the sprocket chain 69 and suitable sprockets on' the glue Wheel and the driving shaft 54. The meohanism is timed so that the blanks are fed down in front of the forms 12. their lower edges being supported by the rest 70 thereof.
The carton blanks are carried by the,
forms between the rollers 71 and 71, 71 which are arranged at the sides of the conveyor. This folds the side portions 72 and 73 of the blan rs against the form, the side portion 74-, being engaged by the frontof the form. The rollers 71 are alincd, being in effect a sectional roller. the two rollers being employed to accommodate the folder mem ber 70. As the side portion. 73 of the carton is swunginto position, the side portion is engaged bythe folder member 70 and The folder member 70 provided with rollers 77. the member being: forked and provided with a spindie 78 by which the rollers are carried-- see Figs. XVI and XVII. On the spindle 78 is a sleeve 79 which servesas a bearing for the. rollers 77. On the sleeve 79 are fin.- gers 80 which are actuated at the proper time to fold the securing flap G-t-umler the side portion 752'.

The shaft- 88 is provided with a sprocket 90 connected by the sprocket chain 91 to a sprocket 92 which is connected by means which will appear as the description proceeds so that the actuation of the folder member is properly timed.
The flap folding fingers 80 are actuated to fold the securing flap (it underthc side por tions '72. I accomplish this by means of the rack 93 coacting with the pinions 94c on the sleeve 79 by which the fingers are carried. The rack is connected by a link 95 to the lever 9G pivoted at 97 on the arm 81 of the slide 82, the lever is conn cted by a link 98 to the rack slide or actuating member 99 having a limited movement independent of the slide 82 so that just prior to the time the slide 82 reaches the limit of its stroke the stop .100 of the actuating member 99 eng ne's-s and the continued movement of the slide 82 actuates the rack 93. The rack 93 is mounted in a slideway 101 on the member 70. See Fig. XVl-l l. The stop for the actuating member 99 is preferably adjustable as shown in Fig. XIV.

The flap folder 111 is mounted on the rock-shaft 116 which is provided with a segment 117 driven through the curved rack 118 carried by an arm on the rock-shaft 11 the object being to actuate the tin folder with a quick stroke so thatthe flap is folded forwardly as the carton is carried along. See Figs. V and VIII. The rock shaft 119 is prrn'ided with an arm 120 connected by the link 121 to the lev'er 122 pivoted at 123 i to be actuated by the cam wheel 124 which is provided with a cam groove in its inner face to engage the arm. See Figs. I and III.
As the cartons are carried under the folder 115- the outer or side flaps are ongaged by the spreaders ni -guides 125 an rangedat eaeh side' ofth'o flap folding and retaining member 115. These spreaders or guides are preferably formed of an A shaped rod arrangedthrough the support 126. The guides or Spreaders are inclined rearwardly to spread lind guide the side flaps to the glue rollers 127. The side flaps are supported as they pass under the glue rollers by the rollers 128. These supporting rollers and flap guides and glue rollers are preferably as shown in my co-ponding application referred'to and therefore are not described with further detail herein.
After the cartons pass the glue rollers, the side flaps are folded and sealed upon the inner flaps by the fiap folders 129 and the flap pressers. 130. As these flap folders 1 2$) which are shaped somewhat like a mold board, engage under the side flaps and fold them inward one upon the other, the flap folders and pressers being arranged alternately so that one flap is turned and pressed upon the inner flaps and the other is turned and pressed upon such flap. The flap pressers are driven by the shafts 176 Which are connected by suitable sprockets 177 and 178 and the chains 179 to the shafts 113. As these flap folders and presscrs are ofthe type illustrated in my co-pending application referred to and as their structural details form no part of my present invention,
I do not describe the same with further detail herein.
After passing the [lap folders, the closed and sealed flaps are engaged by the curved flap re aining bar 131 which retains them in their sealed position until they are engaged by the pressure rollers 132, the objects of placing these rollers some distance from the scaling point being to give the glue or other adhesive employed, time to partially set.
The rollers 132 are connected by a train of gears 133 so that they are all driven in the same dircctiou. One of the rollers is provided with a s noeket connected by the spreclwt chain 131 to a sprocket on the shaft After passing the pressure rollers 132 the flaps are or raged by the retainer 135 which prevents their opening until the cartons are ejected from the carrier formed by the pneumatic means stated.
I will now describe the carton sealing mechanism, that is, the mechanism for seal ing the tilled cartons.
The tilled cartons are carried into the ma chine by the belt 13G carried bythe pulley 1:17 supported in the arm 138 projecting out of the front of the machine and the pulley on the stub shaft 139 positioned so that the belt is supported alongside of the table 140.
The shifter 141 is slidably mounted on the rock-shaft 119 and is actuated by the bell crank lever 142 pivoted at 143 and connected by the link 14 1 to the shifter and by the link 145 to the actuating lever 140. This actuating lever is pivoted at 1 17 to be en gaged by the cam Wheel 1 18 having a cam groove on its inner side. This cam wheel is pnmnted on the outer end of the shaft 59 so that the actuation of the shifter is properly timed. The filled cartons are shifted from the feed belt on to the conveyor carriers or flights 13. The filled cartons may be delivered to the feed belt of any suitable con-- veyer or by hand, as desired, and in pray. tice are delivered from a filling machine di rectly on the belt. The shifting mechanism in detail is preferably that described and claimed in my application for patent, Serial No. 446,893, and 1 do not hereloro illustratc the same with further detail herein.
As the filled cartons are carried along by the conveyer, the top flaps are folded and scaled by the mechanismdescribed for folding the bottom flaps in the manufacture of the carton.
At the rear end of the machine, the sealed .cartons are discharged to the delivery conveyer 18 instead of being carried to the front end of the machine to be discharged as are the empty cartons. The mechanism for eli'ecting this discharge of the filled scaled cartons comprises the discharge belts 150 arranged in opposed pairs at the rear end of the conveyor. The dischar e belts are actuated to engage the lillcd sealed cartons and permit the empty cartons to pass onward to the front end of the machine where they are ejected as described.
The belts 1150 are carried by pulleys 151 and 152, the pulleys 152 bein 1 mounted on the vertical shafts 153 carried by the swinging frame 151.
