EDWARD T. OLEGG, OF NORTH HARPERSFIELD,- NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 109,588,4lated November 29, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT'IN' BURGLAR-ALARMS.
The Scheduler-starred to in these Letters Patentsnd m 'aklng part ofthe same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it'known that I, EDWARD T. OLEGG, of North Harpersfield, in the county of Delaware and State of New York, have inventeda new and improved Bur glar Alarm' Gun; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which'will enable others skilled in tlle art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accoim panying drawing forming part of this specification; in which- Figure 1 represents a plan or top view of my llIl-' proved burglar-alarm gun.
Figure'2 is a vertical sectional view of the same, taken on .the plane of the line a: w, .fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a detail vertical section of 'the saln e,
taken on the plane of the line 3 y, fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
1 This invention relates to a new burglar-alarm gun,- which is so constructed that it will be operated when set in motion, and not otherwise.
i The instrument is applicable to buildings, gardens, &c., and may also be placed in money-safes and vaults. -A in the drawing represents the frame or platform of my improved alarm apparatus.
. The same rests upon Wheels B B, on which it can easily be moved.
Upon the platform are secured eight, more or less, guns, 0 O, pointing in'several directions.
D D are a series of rock-shafts hung in. ears an that project vertically from the platform A. I
All the shafts D are connected with each other-by gear-wheels b b, so'that they willturn simultaneously;
From the shafts D project arms 60, whicl'i 'constitute the hammers for discharging the guns;
One of the shafts D carries a ratchet-wheel, (l,:which is lo ckedhy a spring pawl, E.
A main spring, F, is connected with'one of the shafts D. p I I 'VVh'en the arms 0 are swung upvertioally'for set- .ting the alarm, the spring F will be wound r p, and will, as soon as thepawl E is lifted ofl the ratchetwheel, turn all the shafts, -so as to violently -carry the hammers cagainst the nipples of the guns, thereby exploding their charges. i
The pawl -E is made in form of a lever,- which is, by means of a cord,,e,conne cted with the axlev of a wheel, B.
I FlVitnesses:
hen-the apparatus is moved the wheel turns and winds up the cord, thereby lifting the pawl oh the ratchet-wheel and discharging the guns.
The apparatus is to be. connected with a door or \vindow,'so as to be moved by the opening of the same with the aforementioned effect.
The guns 0 may be arranged to slide in tracks G,
as in fig. 3, and may have racks f meshinginto toothed wheels g on the shafts. I I
This will cause the guns to be thrown forward by the turning of the shafts preparatory to the explosion of the charge. I I I A gate, H, may be p 'oted to a frame projecting from the platform, and'couneoted, hycords or belts h, with oneof the shafts D.
.The gate, when swung down, will conceal the guns, I
preventing theirmuzzles from beingseen.
When, however, the platform is moved,;as aforesaid,'the turning of the shafts will wind up the belts h and elevate the gate, as in fig. 3, tothrow'the guns into battery. I
Having thus described my invention, I claim as uewand desire to secure by Letters Patent l I 1. The burglar-alarm, placed upon wheels, and construoted so that it will be discharged fby'the rotation of the said wheels, asset forth" as herein shown 'au'd'described.
3. The spring E, combined with the rook-shafts D,
guns 0, forthe purpose of throwing all the hammers at onoe,'as set forth. I "4. The lever-pawl E, locking the shafts D,.-and couneeted with the supportinghvl eelsB of the platform, substantially as herein shown and described.
55. The sliding gu'usO, provided with racks j which 'mesh into too'thedwheels g on theshafts D, substan .tially as specified:
6. The swinging gate H, connected with the hammer-shafts D, substantially as and forthe purpose herein shown and described.
EDWARD T. OLEGG.
