HERMAN YESSNE, OF DULUTH, MINNESOTA.
DRESS-GOODS STEAMER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERMAN YEssNn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dress-Goods Steamers, of which the following is a specification,
reference being had thereln to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in cloth steaming machines, the object of which is to provide a simple and inexpensive device which effectively sponges and shrinks the material with greater rapidity than heretofore and without the necessity of skilled labor and consequently reducing the cost of the work to a minimum.
Another object of the present invention is to produce a steaming machine of the simplest possible construction and operation and which is so devised that all danger of being scalded while working with the cloth is eliminated.
The invention consists of novel details of construction and advantages of operation all as will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device with the cover removed. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-sectional view taken on the line ao of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings in which like reference numerals designate similar parts, 1 represents a tank of any suitable size which is preferably constructed of metal. For the purpose of illustration I have shown a rectangular tank although it is well un derstood that nearly any other shape of tank could be used without departing from the spirit of my invention. The tank 1 is di vided into two compartments 7 and 8 by means of a horizontally movable shelf or partition 2 which is supported in a groove or track 3 carried by the ends of the tank 1. One side of the said tank is provided with a horizontal slot 2 through which the shelf 2 protrudes when the partition is in its normal inward position, and through which the said partition slides when it is drawn outwardly.
In the upper of the two chambers formed by the partition 2 are suitably arranged two rollers 1 which are designed to rest and to be held in proper position by sockets 5 or any other means into which they may be Specification of Letters Patent.

readily placed or removed. The said sockets are carried by the sides of the tank 1 and are arranged in pairs of two at each end of the chamber 7. At one end the rollers 4: are designed to be engaged with cranks 6 in such a manner that they may be revolved in either direction at will, from the outside of the tank. A cover 9 is provided to entirely close the top of the chamber 8.
In operation the lower ortion or chamber 7 of the tank 1 is partially filled with water and heated in any convenient manner. The dress goods which it is desired to steam may be wound up on either of the two rollers 1 and fed to the other in such a manner that by revolving the crank carried by the empty roller the cloth will be wrapped therearound, as is readily understood.
The partition 2 may be wholly or partially removed to allow the steam to rise from the chamber 7 and penetrate the cloth as it passes from one roller to the other roller as the crank 6 is revolved. When it is desired to examine the goods during the steaming operation or to remove or install the same, the partition 2 may be closed and with the cover 9 removed the goods may be handled without danger from the steam.
Gears or other driving means may be employed for the operation of the rollers and many other minor details may be altered by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A cloth steaming machine comprising a tank, a partition dividing the said tank horizontally into two compartments, the said partition movable into and out of the said tank, the lower of said compartments containing the steam producing water, and the upper of said compartments carrying means for successively winding and unwinding goods in a plane parallel to that of the said partition for the purpose described.
2. A cloth steaming machine comprising a tank, a partition dividing the said tank into two compartments, the lower of the said compartments containing the steam producing water, the upper of the said compart ments having means for successively winding and unwinding goods, said partition movable into and out of the said tank, whereby steam from the heated water withby two compartments may be united into one to allow the steam to come into contact with the goods, and whereby the compartments may be separated to exclude steam from the goods, the parts arranged as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my 20 signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
HERMAN YESSNE.
