SWAN TEVANDER, OF TOLEDO, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN CAN COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 28, 1914.
Application filed July 17, 1909. Serial No. 508,158.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SWAN TEVANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in'Machines for Closing Covcrs on Sheet-Steel or other Vessels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to cover closin machines for sheet steel kegs or vesse s for white lead or other heavy articles.
The covers of sheet steel white lead kegs or vessels are furnished each with annular inner and outer flanges which tightly and snugly embrace an external roll on the body of the vessel when the cover is forced home or closed on the body, the outer flanges being provided with a plurality of integral lips which are bent or curved under or around the external roll on the body after the cover has been forced or closed home, in order to lock or hold the cover securely in its closed position on the body.
The object of my invention is to provide a machine of a simple and efficient construction by means of which the covers of sheet steel white lead kegs may be both speedily and cheaply closed or forced home on the bodies thereof, and the locking lips on the outer flanges of the covers tucked or bent under and around the external roll on the body to securely lock and hold the covers in position.
The machine embodying my invention comprises in cooperative combination a support for the white lead keg or vessel, a closure head for forcing the cover home on the body, said closure head and support being the one relatively movable with respect to the other, and a plurality of movable lip tuckers carried by the closure head adapted to engage the locking lips of the cover after the cover is forced home on the body by the closure head and bend or tuck the same under the roll on the body. Each movable elevation of a white lead keg closing machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan View. Fig. 3 1s a detail central verti cal SGCtIOII: Fig. 4 is a detail section on line 4- 1 of Fig. l and Fig. 5 is a detail transverse section on line 55 of Fig. 1.
In the drawing, A represents the frame ofthe machine, B the vessel support furnished with registering devices or projections 0 to engage, the white lead keg or vessel X and register it in position with the closure head.
D is the closure head by which the cover Y is forced tightly within the upper end or mouth of the vessel X. I
E is a toothed stem or rack for reciprocating the closure head.
F F are the movable lip tuckers, each preferably furnished with an integral operating lever f, pivotally connected at f to lugs 65 on the closure head D. Each of the levers or devices f for operating the movable lip tuckers F is preferably furnished with an anti-friction roller f for engagement with a cam G by which the movable lip tuckers are operated to bend or tuck the locking lips 3 on the cover Y under the external roll or shoulder at on the steel keg or vessel X. The closure head D has .an external upright face 03 adapted to fit within the inner upright wall y of the cover Y and support the same against the'inward radial thrust. This closure head is provided with a horizontal externally projecting flange 05 adapted to engage the upper portion p of the cover flange and thus hold the same snugly seated on the external roll a: of the pail or vessel X during the lip tucking operation. The operating cam G for the movable lip tuckers is preferably a rotary cam and is secured to a hollow shaft or sleeve G surrounding the operating stem or rack E by which the closure head D is reciprocated. This movable tucker operating cam G is provided with a lever G for operating it. The cam G is preferably furnished with .a plurality of cam rooves g, one for each of the tucker operating levers. The toothed stem or rack E for reciprocating the closure head is operated by a gear H, the shaft k of which is journaled in a suitable bearing a on the frame A, and the shaft of this operating gear is furnished with a lever H for operating the closure head. The lever H is preferably furnished with a counterweight H which substantially counterbalances the closure head, lip tuckers and their operating cam.
While I- prefer to operate the movable lip tuckers by means of vibrating levers and a rotary cam, the same may be moved in and out asrequired by other suitable operating mechanism. The cam grooves g of the cam G serve not only toimovethe lipv-otuckers lip tuckei's carriedby said head and means for operating said lip tuckers independently of said head substantially as specified.
2. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a vessel support, of a reciprocating closure head for forcing the cover home on the body, mechanism for operating said closure head, movable lip tuckers carried by said closure head for bending the locking lips on the coverunder the roll on the body, and vibrating levers for operating said lip tuckers and a lever operating cam carried by said head for actuatln said vibrating levers, substantially as specified.
SWAN TEVANDER.
