I To aZl-wlmm UNITED STATES WILLIAM MACGLASHAN, OF SOUTH BEND,
CORPORATION, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, Gt
SAFETY-SWITCH MGLGR V Specification. of Lettc Patent. Application filed February 5, 1913.
it may concern:
v Be it .znown that I, VVILLIAM irlncGnasnax, a citizen of the United States of America, residing, at South Bend, St. Joscph county, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Swit-cl1es for Motor Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention 'relates to an electric switch, particularly adapted for use in con nection with electrically driven road vehicles. Such vehicles are commonly provided with a switch independent of the controller by means of which the circuit may be opened when for any reason the controller cannot be conveniently operated or refuses to act. It is also used to open the circuit when the machine is idle to prevent leakage or accidental starting); and for safety in overhauling, and to prevent unauthorized use of the machine the switch is provided with a removable hey. The ditlicultv commonly e2;- pericnccd in connection with the operation of such switches, is due to the fact that owing to ignorance or inaclvertence on the part of the operator the controller will sometimes be. open atthe switch or the machine stopped by opening the circuit at the switch anc later with the controller in position to pass considerable current through the armaturc, the switch will be thrown in and the circuit closed. Under these circumstances the machine starts suddenly and often unexpectediy and serious accidentshave resulted. ()n the other hand if the machine is heavily loaded so its inertia cannot be overcome instantly the motor is apt to he burned out for the hack electro-inotivc force and the electrical resistance in the motor are slight; and the flow of current excessive with correspondingly great tendency to burn out the motor.
The switch which is the subject of this in 'vention is constructed for the purpose of overcoming this ditficulty, and by its use accidental starts and burning out of the motor under the circumstances described are rendered practically impossible.
Described in general terms, thede'vice consists of automatic means for locking the switch out oi. contact so that the eirciiiit is held open together with means connected to and moving With the controller for render;
ing the locking means on the switch inoperamoved from neutral with the circuit l tire when the coi'itroliei' at x'ieutral i in the ne rat positioiu and. only in the new trai position of the controller, can the switch be opcrv d to close the Circuit. Thus it. is "cm impossible, once the switch t- ""u out. to a. current through th notor with the controller in the pos ,ion of full speed forward or baclc ward, or halt speed aaclcward or forward, or in any position. other than the neutral posi tion.
Described more spe itically, the dci'ice in its pi'cterrml term cc ists of a pivoted switch incl-ling; and l'reahingr the circuit which may he provided with a movable key for engnzg irw' the sui a spriiigactuatcd rctainer engaging bolt on the s the holt ciil-ated, and. holdi it in rctri. born he retainer being disconti ed or apertured at one point oehct to admit the bolt anddoct; the means for closing" the bolt, and means cor clos ochet to exclude ectcd' to the control means L close ti illustruteiit a satiety accordance with the invention.
