SEWING-MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES I-Incom, a subject of the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at Kilbowie, Clydebank, Dumbartonshire, Scotland, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the looper-aotu-.
ating mechanism for sewing machines particularly of the kind used for sewing gloves and fur, and it consists of an improved construction in which the rising and falling movements, as well as the vibratory or lateral movement-s across the needle path, are effected positively or without the intervention of a co-acting spring or springs and are suitably balanced, whereby increased speed of the machine may be attained without undue vibration.
In a glove-sewing machine of ordinary type in which the material is fed between the contiguous edges of a pair of disks rotatable on vertical axes, while the needle reciprocates in a horizontal path over the disks, the looper cooperating with the needle receives its rising and falling movements from a cam acting in one direction against the power of a spring which effects the return movement, and the speed of the machine is limited on account of the inertia of the spring, while undue vibration is set up.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a part elevation, part vertical section of a glove-sewing machine of the type referred to embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan, the cover carrying the thread tension and guiding devices being removed.
Referring to the drawings, the looper holder A is connected to a link B universally jointed at its lower end C to said holder and at the other end D to a fixed or adjustable arm E on the machine head F; and while the lateral movements of the looper point G are communicated in the usual way by the action of a grooved cam H on the opposite end of the holder, its rising and falling movements are efiected at the proper times by the combined action of the translatory motion imparted to the looper holder A and of the arcuate motion due to the swinging of the link B connected to the looper holder.
The looper holder A is carried by a substantially vertical fulcrum pin I mounted on the upper transverse member J of a Specification of Letters Patent.

frame K fitted to swing on a substantially horizontal axis L carried in bearings in the machine head F, while the lower transverse member M of the swinging frame is connected to an eccentric strap N fitted on an eccentric O on the main shaft P which actuates the needle bar Q, as by means of an eccentriooperated yoke R, and which shaft also carries the grooved cam H for imparting vibratory movement to the looper holder. Thus, the looper S is directly actuated in all its movements from the main shaft P without the intervention of any co-acting spring.
From the foregoing description it will be observed that the rod L afiords a stationary support concentrically with which the pivotal supporting pin J reciprocates and carries with it, within a range of movement terminating at opposite sides of the stationary support, the transversely disposed fulcrumstud I maintained substantially vertical throughout its travel and upon which the looper-bar A vibrates. By its longitudinally spaced pivotal connections with the separated stationary arm or stud E and supporting rod L, the endwise movement of the looper -bar communicated through the lateral travel of the fulcrumstud I produces the requisite vertical tilting movements in addition to the lateral vibratory and endwise movements required to produce the requisite cooperation of the looper with the needle in the production of stitches.
In the present embodiment of the improvement, the looper-bar is sustained wholly by pivotal connections with its fixed supports E and L and has all its movements positively imparted thereto by a very simple mechanism, which permits high speed, quiet running, a minimum amount of friction, and freedom from vibration owing to the substantial balance of the operative parts. An advantage of having the extreme positions of the fulcrum-stud I upon opposite sides of its axis of travel L is that the greatest amount of vertical motion relative to the loop-presenting and loop-seizing positions of the needle may be obtained from the movements of the rocking element K.
Having now described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a sewing machine, the looper-actuating mechanism comprising a looper-bar,
a fulcrum-stud for said bar, a swinging support having direct pivotal connection with said stud, actuating means for said swinging support, whereby endwise movements are imparted to the looper-bar, a rotary cam and a connection between the same and the looper-bnr whereby lateral movements are imparted to the latter, and a swinging link directly and universally ointed to said bar and adapted to impart tilting movements to the same.
2. In a sewing machine, the looper-aetuating mechanism comprising two swinging elements, a looper-bar and a fulcrum-stud therefor, a direct connection between the fuL crum-stud and the first of said elements, a
mew-1e universal joint directly connecting the sec-- 0nd of said elements and the looper-bar, means for actuating the first element to impart endwise movements to the bar, said movements being translated into endwise tilting movements by the second element, a rotary cam, and a connection between said cam and the looper-bar whereby lateral movements are imparted to the latter.
