To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT E. MoGlLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Perambulators or Go-Carts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in folding perambulators or go-carts and more particularly to that class comprising a hinged frame for supporting the seat, a running gear frame on which a foldablebody structure is su oortcd and foldin wheel supports or forks adapted to fold under the runing gear frame when not in use, and the invention has for its primary object to provide improved means whereby the raising of the handle will automatically lock the folding wheels in their operative position.
A further object is to provide improved means whereby the raising of the handle from its folded position will automatically unfold the body structure and simultaneously lock the folding wheels in their operative position.
A further object is to provide improved means whereby the body structure brace may be utilized as a lock and brace for the wheel forks or supports.
A further object is to provide an improved device of this character having an adjustable, flexible back for the seat and improved means for maintaining the back under tension.
A further object is to provide an improved device of this character having an adjustable flexible back and improved means for taking up the slack of the back.
A further object is to provide improved means for locking the back in its adjusted position and improved means for locking the take-up device.
A further object is to provide an improved device of this character which will be simple and cheap in construction, effective and eflicient in operation and which may be folded or collapsed into a compact space when not in use.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects, as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings, illustrating an exemplification of the invention and in which Figure l is a side elevation of an improved device of .this character constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of Fig. 1. Fig. at is a side elevation of Fig. 1 with a seat supporting frame and the handle in a folded position against the rimning gear frame. Referring more particularly to the drawings, the same reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the several views.
In this exemplification of the invention, the running gear frame comprises spaced side bars 20, preferably connected at their forward ends by means of a cross bar 21, which extends transversely across the frame and is offset as shown in Fig. 2 at a point intermediate its ends and between the side bars 20 so that the offset portion will project forwardly beyond the extremities of the side bars 20.
Rota-tively mounted on each of the side bars 20, preferably adjacent each extremity thereof, are wheel supports or forks 22 which may be of any desired or suitable construction but preferably bifurcated or fork shaped, and ournaled within the bifurcated portion of these wheel supports are suitable wheels. The wheel supports or forks 22 on each of the side bars 20 are respectively connected so as to simultaneously rotate about the side bars 20 when either of the forks is moved, in any desired or suitable manner, preferably by means of a connecting bar or member 23, the extremities of which may be secured in any suitable manner to the inner arms of the supporting forks or members 22. These connecting bars or members 23 are preferably located below and spaced from the side bars 20 and se cured thereto and preferably at points adjacent the rear wheel supports or forks 22 are clips 24% for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth.
Any suitable means may be provided for holding the wheels and the supports or forks thereof in operative position, such as a hook or member 25, one end of which is preferably pivoted to one of the connecting bars or members 23 and the free extremity thereof is bent into a suitable hook shaped portion, which latter is adapted to engage a suitable clip 26 on the opposite bar or member 23. A foldable body structure embodying a frame for supporting the sides of the seat is provided, and this frame preferably comprises spaced side bars or members 27 which are pivotally connected in any suitable manner to the forward end of the running gear frame preferably to the cross bar 21 and said body structure is adapted to assume an inclined position, the free end of which is located preferably adjacent the rear of the running gear frame. The rear end of the body structure is supported by means of braces 28 which are pivoted intermediate their ends to suitable collars or supports 29, which latter are secured to the side bars 20 of the running gear frame. The lower extremities 30 of these braces 28 project below their points of pivotal support 31 and also extend below the side bars 20 of the running gear frame and terminate at points adjacent the connecting bars or members 23 of the wheel supports or forks 22 and the lower extremities of the depending portions 30 are connected together by a cross rod or brace 32. hen the the braces are in an upright position to hold the seat support elevated, the lower extremities or depending portions 30 thereof will pass between the clips 24: and the connecting members or rods 23 of the wheels supports or forks 22 and lock the wheel supports or forks in their operative position. The connecting bars or cross rod 32 of the braces 28 enables the braces to resist lateral movement of the wheel forks without necessitating the braces being constructed of objectionably heavy or thick material. t suitable handle 33, preferably comprising spaced side arms and a connecting cross bar 34, is pivotally connected in any suitable manner to the rear end of the running gear frame, preferably by means of a transverse rod or bar Pivotally connected by one end to each of the side bars 33 of the handle and at points preferably remote from the pivot point of the handle is one end of a link 36. The free end of the link is pivotally connected to the upper or free end of the respective brace 28 in any suitable manner, preferably by means of a nut or member 37. A rod or bar 38 is spaced from and se cured to each of the side bars or members 27 of the seat frame in any suitable manner, preferably by means of clips or ears 39 and the nut or member 37, which pivotally connects the brace 28 and the link 36, is provided with a suitable aperture 40 through which the rod or bar 33 passes and when the braces 28 are moved about their points of pivotal support 31 in a manner to be hereinafter more fully set forth, the nut or member 37 will have a sliding movement on the rod or bar .38, which will cause the seat frame to be raised or lowered about its point of pivotal support on the running gear frame according to the direction of movement of the braces 28. Any suitable means may be provided for holding the nut or sliding member 37 in position to pivotally connect the link 36 and the brace 28, preferably screw threads on the portion of the member which projects through and beyond the link and brace, which threaded portion is adapted to receive a suitable nut 41. With this construction, it will be noted that when the handle 33 is moved from the position shown in full lines in Fig. of the drawing about its point of pivotal support 35 to the position in dotted lines in said figure, the link 36 will move the upper or free ends of the braces 28 forwardly toward the front of the running gear frame, causing the braces to move about their point of pivotal support 31, which will move the connecting brace or cross rod 32 and the lower extremity of the depending portions 30 of the brace rearwardly to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5, which will cause the depending portions 30 to move out of engagement with the clips 24.
As the upper ends of the braces 28 move forwardly the free ends of the side bars 27 of the body structure will be raised slightly to permit the free ends of the braces to pass forwardly, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. A continued forward movement of the handle 33 will cause the nut or member 37 to slide on the bar or rod 38 which will tend to draw the side bars 27 of the seat frame downwardly toward the running gear frame after the free ends of the braces have passed their highest point during their forward moven'ient. VJhen the side bars 27 are in close proximity to the side bars 20 of the running gear frame, the handles 33 may be moved farther forward and folded upon the running gear frame, as shown more clearly in Fig. st of the drawing. The wheel supports or forks 22 may then be folded under the running gear frame.
A seat 1-2 is supported by suitable springs 1-3, which latter are secured to cross bars 14, which extend transversely across the running gear frame and are secured by their extremities to the side bars 20 of the running gear frame, and said seat i2 is of such a. width as not to interfere with or obstruct the movement of the side bars 27 of the body structure when the latter is folded against the running gear frame.
The body structure may be locked in its operative position in any desired or suitable manner, preferably by means of a locking frame which in this exemplification of the invention comprises spaced side arms 45, which are connected at one extremity by means of a cross bar or member 4-6, and the free extremities -17 of the side bars 455 are pivotally connected to the respective side bar 27 of the seat frame as at 4:8. This looking frame is preferably provided at a point adjacent the connecting bar 46 with notches or recesses it) preferably one being located in the under face of each of the side bars 45, and these notches or recesses d9 are adapted to pass over a suitable transverse bar or rod 50, which is secured to the handle 33 and extends across the space between the sides of the handle and said locking frame is of such a length that when the seat supporting frame and the braces 28 are in an operative position, the notches or recesses 49 will pass over the bar 50 and lock the handle together with the brace 28 of the seat supporting frame against further movement.
The seat 12 is provided with an adjustable, flexible back 51 which may be constructed of any suitable, flexible material. hie end of the back 51 is secured adjacent the seat 4:2 in any suitable manner, preferably to a transverse bar or red 53, the extremities of which are deflected or bent down ardly and offset and secured to the side bars 20 of the running gear frame. The offset portion of the bar or rod 53 is so arranged as not to interfere with the pivotal movement of the seat frame and is of such a height as to stand adjacent the top of the seat 12.
Any suitable means may be provided for supporting the upper end of the back 51 and for maintaining the back under tension and to take up the slack thereof, and in this exemplilication of the invention the improved means preferably comprises a suitable spring roller 54, the ends of which are mounted in suitable brackets or supports 55, which latter are mounted for sliding movement upon. the side bars d5 of the locking frame. The free end of the back 51 is secured to the roller 5 1 in any suitable manner and the spring is so arranged as to cause the adjacent end of the back to be wound upon the roller and said roller is of such a length as to extend substantially across the space formed between the free ends of the side bars :27.
Any suitable means may be provided for locking the roller 5st to maintain the back 51 at the desired tension and in this exam plification of the invention the roller 54 is preferably provided with a plurality of radial teeth 56, which are preferably located adjacent each end of the roller and also adjacent the inner faces of the side bars 415. A suitable dog or pawl 57 is pivotally supported on each of the brackets or collars 55 and so arranged as to engage or stand with in the path of movement of the teeth 56 to lock the roller. The free extremities 58 of the dogs or pawls 57 which project beyond their points of pivotal support are preferably connected by means of a cross bar or member 59, which cross bar or member serves as a means for simultaneously moving both of the dogs or pawls 57 about their points of pivotal support and out of engagement with the teeth 56 to release the roller 5% and to permit the back 51 to be drawn off of or unwound from the roller 54; or to permit the spring in the roller to wind up the back 51 according to the necessity. Any suitable means may be provided for supporting the free ends of the projecting portions 58 of the dogs 57 so as to hold the dogs into engagement with the teeth 56 on the rollers and in this exemplification of the invention suitable lateral projections 60 are secured to each of the extensions 58 and said projections are adapted to rest in suitable slots or recesses 61 in the upper faces or edges of the side bars 45 of the locking frame. Any suitable number of these recesses or notches 61 may be provided and are adapted to coiiperate with the projection 60 to permit the angle of inclination of the back 51 to be adjusted. In Fig. 5 the back 51 is shown in a position to cause the occupant of the carriage to assume a sitting or an uprightposture but when it is desired to Vary the angle of inclination of the back,
all that is necessary is to swing the dogs or pawls 57 about their points of pivotal support on the brackets or sleeves 55 to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 10 and then draw the brackets or sleeves 55 together with the roller 54 rearwardly to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and then release the free ends 58 of the dogs or pawls 57 to permit the projections 60 to enter the desired notch or recess 61. During this rearward movement the back 51 will be unwound from the roller 54. lVhen it is desired to fold or collapse the perambulator from the position shown in Fig. 5, the dogs or pawls 57 are first moved out of engagement with the teeth 56 on the roller 54 in the manner as already set forth, that is, by raising the cross bar or member 59 and throwing it forwardly over the roller 54. When the roller is thus released, the tension of the spring therein will tend to wind the back 51 on the roller to take up any slack. \Vhen the roller is thus released the locking frame may be raised about its points of pivotal support 48 with the side bars 27 of the seat frame and thrown over to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5 until the side bars 45 engage and rest upon the supports 27 on the side bars 27. WVhen the locking frame has assumed this position, the sleeves or brackets 55 will move by means of gravity and also under the influence of the spring in the roller 54 on the side bars 45 to wind up the back and take up the slack therein, as shown in Fig. 5. The handle being thus unlocked, the seat frame may be folded upon the running gear frame in the manner already set forth and as the seat frame is lowered, the spring in the roller 54 will cause the back to be wound on the roller and when the seat frame and handle have assumed the folded position as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing, the cross bar 50 be tween the side bars 33 of the handle will enter and rest within the recess 49 of the side bar 45.
A suitable foot rest is supported by the running gear frame in front of the seat 42 and said foot rest preferably comprises a back portion 62, a bottom 63 and a front portion (34. The free end of the back 62 is secured to the seat in any suitable man her or if desired, may be constructed of and be a continuation of the same material which covers the seat. The free end of the front 64 may be supported in any suitable manner and in this exemplification of the invention, a suitable supporting bail having side arms 65 and a. connecting member 66 at the front end thereof is provided and the free ends of the side arms 65 are preferably deflected inwardly or toward each other as at 67 and said deflected ends 67 are pivotally supported on the bottom of the seat 42 in any suitable manner, preferably by means of suitable bearings 68. The free end of the front portion 64 of the foot rest is secured to the connecting portion 66 in any suitable manner and said connecting portion is of such a length that the side arms 65 will be suitably spaced from each other to permit the feet of the occupant to rest upon the bottom 68 of the foot rest and the said arms 67 are of such a length that the connecting portion or member 66 will rest upon and terminate short of the front of the offset portion of the connecting bar 21 at the front of the running gear frame. The foot rest is suspended by this bail or frame so as to depend below the running gear frame to accommodate the feet of the occupant when in a sitting or upright posture. WVhen the back 51 has been adjusted to allow the occupant to assume a reclining position, the foot rest may be adjusted or elevated to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5 so as to elevate the feet to permit the occupant to assume a comfortable position.
Any suitable means may be provided for supporting the foot rest in its elevated position and in this exemplification of the invention there is shown suitable clips or supports 69, which are preferably secured to the side bars 27 of the body structure in any suitable manner, such as by means of screws or bolts and these clips or supports are so arranged as to project inwardly from the inner face of the side bars 27. The bail or support for the foot rest is preferably of an elastic construction and when it is desired to secure the foot rest in its adjusted position, the side arms (35 may be sprung slightly in- 'ard to permit them to pass the clips or sup ports 69 when the bail or supporting frame is raised, and when they have passed the clips or supports the pressure thereon may be released to permit the side arms 65 to assume their normal position and when the bail or supporting frame is lowered, the side arms 65 will engage and be supported by the clips or supports 69 as shown more clearly in Fig. 12 of the drawing.
In order that the invention might be fully understood by those skilled in the art, the details of the foregoing embodiment thereof have been thus specifically described but lVhat I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a hinged seat support, a folding handle, a deflectable brace for said seat support, means for moving the brace and seat support into position by the operation of said handle, and means separate from the brace and the first said means for locking the brace in its adjusted position.
2. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a hinged seat support, a folding handle, a defiectable brace for the seat support, means for moving the brace and seat support into position by the operation of said handle, and separate means operatively related to the seat frame and handle for locking the brace against movement.
In a folding perambnlator, the combination of a running gear frame, a seat support pivoted. at one end to the frame, a folding handle, a brace for the free end of the seat frame, means for moving the brace and seat support into position by the operation of the handle, and means pivotally connected to the free end of the seat frame and adapted to engage the handle to lock the handle and brace against movement.

In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a seat support pivoted at one end to the frame, a folding handle, a brace for the free end of the scat frame, means for moving the brace and seat support into position by the operation of the handle, a member pivotally connected to the free end of the seat frame, and adapted to engage the handle to lock the seatframe in position, said member being also adapted to be moved about its point of pivotal support and folded on to the seat frame, to permit the scat frame to be folded, and means for supporting the said member in its folded position.
5. In a folding perambulator, the combination, of a running gear frame, a hinged seat support, a folding handle, a dellectable brace for the seat support, means for moving the brace ann support into position by the operation of the handle, a folding member on the seat support, and means respectively on the handle and member adapted to be brought into engagement to locl; the seat frame and handle in their adjusted position.
(3. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a hinged scat support, a folding brace for supporting the seat support, said brace being slidingly and pivotally connected to the seat support and means for moving the brace to adjust the scat support by the operation of the handle.
7. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a hinged seat support, a folding handle, a brace for supporting the seat support, said brace hav ing a sliding and pivotal connection to the seat support, means for moving the brace to adjust the scat support by the operation of the handle, and means separate from the brace and the first said means and opera tively related to the handle and the seat support for locking the latter in its adjusted position.
8. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a hinged seat support, a folding handle, a pivoted brace for supporting the seat support, said brace also having a sliding and pivotal connection with the seat support, means for moving the brace about its pivots by the operation of the handle to adjust the seat support, and means separate from the brace and operatively related to the handle and the seat support for locking the latter in its adjusted position.
9. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a hinged seat support, a folding handle, and a brace for supporting the seat support, said brace comprising a plurality of sections pivotally connected at one end, the pivotally connected ends having a sliding connection with the seat support, the free end of one section being pivotally connected to the running gear frame and the free end of the other section being pivotally connected to the handle, whereby the operation of the handle will move the brace to adjust the seat support.
10. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a hinged seat support, a folding handle, a brace for supporting the seat support, said brace comprising a plurality of sections pivotally connected at one end, the pivotally connected ends having a sliding connection with the seat support, the free end of one section being pivotally connected to the running gear frame and the free end of the other section being pivotally connected to the handle, whereby the operation of the handle will move the brace to adjust the seat support, and means separate from the brace for looking the seat support in its adjusted position.
11. In a folding perambulato-r, the combination of a running gear frame, a hinged seat support, a folding handle, a brace for supporting the seat support, said brace comprising a plurality of sections pivotally connected at one end, the pivotally connected ends having a sliding connection with the seat support, the free end of one section being pivotally connected to the running gear frame and the free end of the other section being pivotally connected to the handle, whereby the operation of the handle will move the brace to adjust the seat support, and means movably supported by the seat support and adapted to engage the handle to lock the seat support in its adjusted position.
12. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a hinged seat support including a member, a guide on said member, a folding handle, a brace pivotally supported by the running gear frame, means operatively related to the brace and the guide for slidingly and pivotally connecting the brace to the seat support, and means for moving the brace about its point of pivotal support to adjust the seat support into position by the operation of the handle.
18. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a hinged seat support including a member, a guide on said member, a folding handle, a brace pivotally supported by the running gear frame, means operatively related to the brace and the guide for slidingly and pivotally connecting the brace to the seat support, means for moving the brace about its point of pivotal support to adjust the seat support into position by the operation of the handle, and means separate from the brace and the first said means for locking the seat support and brace in their adjusted position.
14. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a hinged seat support including a member, a guide on said member, a folding handle, a brace pivotally supported by the running gear frame, means operatively related to the brace and the guide for slidingly and pivotally connecting the brace to the seat support, means for moving the brace about its point of pivotal support to adjust the seat support into position by the operation of the handle, and means separate from the brace and the first said means, foldable with relation to the seat support and adapted to detachably engage the handle to lock the seat support and brace in their adjusted position.
15. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a hinged seat support including a inelnber, a guide supported by and spaced from said member, a folding handle, a brace pivotally supported by the running gear frame, means for slidingly and pivotally connecting the brace to the member, said means comprising a member pivotally connected to the brace and provided with an aperture through which the guide moves, and means for moving the brace to cause the member to slide on the guide to adjust the support into position by the operation of the handle.
16. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a hinged seat support including a member, a guide supported by and spaced from said member, a folding handle, a brace for the seat support, said brace comprising two sections, and a member connecting one end of said sections to form a toggle lever construction, said member having a sliding engagement with the guide, the free end of one of the sections being pivotally supported by the running gear frame and the free end of the other section being pivotally connected to the handle, whereby the movement of the handle will separate the sections of the brace and adjust the member on the guide to move the seat support into position.
17 In a folding perambulator, the combination of arunning gear frame, a hinged seat support including a member, a guide supported by and spaced from said member, a folding handle, a brace for the seat support, said brace comprising two sections, a member connecting one end of said sections to form a toggle lever construction, said member having a sliding engagement with the guide, the free end of one of the sections being pivotally supported by the running gear frame and the free end of the other section being pivotally connected to the handle, whereby the movement of the handle will separate the sections of the brace and adjust the member on the guide to move the seat support into position, and means separate from the brace and foldable with relation to the seat support and adapted to engage thehandle for locking the seat support in its adjusted position.
18. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a hinged seat support including spaced side members, a folding handle, a deflectable brace for the seat support, means for moving said brace and support. into position by the operation of the handle, a member pivotally supported by the seat support and adapted to engage the handle to lock the seat support in position, said member being foldable between the said members of the seat support and means for supporting the member in its folded position.
19. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a hinged seat support including spaced side members, a folding handle, a deflectable brace for the seat support, means for movin said brace and support into position by the operation of the handle, a. locking member comprising spaced arms, a connection between the arms, said connection extending across the space between the side members, said arms being pivotally connected respectively to one of the side members and foldable between the said side members, and supports on said members for the locking member in its folded position, said locking member being adapted to engage the handle to secure the seat support in its adjusted position.
20. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, wheel supports rotatable with respect to the frame, a folding seat support on the frame, braces pivotally connected intermediate their ends to the running gear frame, one end of the braces being pivoted to the seat support, and means connected with the wheel supports below the running gear frame adapted to be engaged by the other ends of the braces.
21. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, wheel supports rotatable with respect to the frame, a-
folding seat support on the frame, braces pivotally connected intermediate their ends to the running gear frame, one end of the braces being pivoted to the seat support, and means connected with the wheel supports below the running gear frame adapted to be engaged by the other ends of the braces, the extremities of the braces below the pivot being connected to strengthen the braces to resist lateral deflection of the wheel sup ports.
22. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, wheel supports rotatable with respect to the frame, a folding seat support on the frame, braces pivotally supported intermediate their ends by the running gear frame, one end of the braces having asliding and pivotal connection with the seat support, the other ends depending below the running gear frame, and means connected with the wheel supports adapted to be engaged by'the depending ends of the braces to hold the wheel supports against lateral deflection.
23. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, wheel supports rotatable with respect to the frame, a folding seat support on the frame, braces pivotally supported intermediate their ends by the running gear frame, one end of the braces having a sliding and pivotal connection with the seat support, the other ends depending below the running gear frame, and means connected with the wheel supports adapted to be engaged by the depend ing ends of the braces, and means connecting the extremities of the braces below their points of pivotal support to strengthen the braces to resist lateral deflection of the supports.
24. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, wheel supports rotatable with respect to the frame, a hinged seat support, a folding handle, a
deflectable brace for the seat support com prising a toggle-lever having its outer ends pivoted respectively to the running gear frame and the handle, the inner pivot of said toggle being pivotally connected to the seat support hereby the movement of the handle will arise and lower the support, an extension on one of the arms of the lever depending below the running gear frame, and means connected with the wheel supports below the running gear frame for receiving and holding said extension.
25. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, wheel supports rotatable with relation to the frame, a hinged seat support, a folding handle, a deflectable brace for the seat support comprising a toggle-lever having its outer ends pivoted respectively to the running gear frame and the handle, means operatively :related to the inner pivot of said toggle and having a sliding and pivotal connection with the seat support, whereby the movement of the handle will raise and lower the support, an extension on the end of the arm which is pivoted to the running gear frame, said extension depending below the frame, and
means connected with the wheel supports adapted to be engaged by said extension.
26. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a hinged seat support, a brace for the support pivotally supported on the running gear frame, said brace having a sliding and pivotal connection with the seat support, means for moving said brace and support into position by the operation of the handle, a foot rest, and separate means for adjusting said foot rest,
27. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a hinged seat support, a brace for the support pivotally supported on the running gear frame, said brace having a sliding and pivotal connection with the seat support, means for moving said brace and support into position by the operation of the handle, a foot rest, a frame for supporting the foot rest, said frame being pivotally connected to the running gear frame, and means adapted to be engaged by the last said frame for holding the forward end of the foot rest in an elevated position.
28. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a hinged body structure, a folding handle, means for moving the body structure into position by the operation of the handle, a flexible back, means for automatically maintaining said back under tension, and means whereby the last said means may be bodily and freely adjusted with respect to its support.
29. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a hinged body structure, a folding handle, means for moving the said body structure into position by the operation of the handle, a flexible back, spring controlled means for maintaining the back under tension, and means whereby the said spring controlled means may be bodily and freely adjusted with respect to its support.
30. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a hinged body structure, a folding handle, means for moving the body structure into position by the movement of the handle, a flexible back for the seat, a spring controlled roller, a support for the roller, one end of the back be ing normally wound upon the roller, means for bodily adjusting the roller on the support to unwind the back from the roller against the tension of the spring, and means for locking the parts in their adjusted positions.
31. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a hinged seat support, a folding handle, means for moving the seat support lnto position by the movement of the handle, a member for locking the seat support in its adjusted position, a roller adjustably mounted on said member, a flexible back for the seat, one end of the back being normally wound upon the roller, and means for locking the roller.
32. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a hinged seat support, a folding handle, means for moving the seat support into position by the movement of the handle, a member for locking the seat support in its adjusted position, a roller adjustably mounted on said member, a flexible back for the seat, adapted to be wound upon the roller, and means for winding the back upon the roller when the latter is adjusted, said means serving to normally hold the back taut.
33. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a hinged seat support, a folding handle, means for moving the seat support into position by the movement of the handle, a member for locking the seat support in its adjusted position, a roller adjustably mounted on said member, a flexible back for the seat, adapted to be wound upon the roller, means for winding the back upon the roller when the latter is adjusted, said means serving to normally hold the back taut, and means for locking the roller against rotation.
34. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a hinged seat support, a folding handle, means for moving the seat support into position by the movement of the handle, a member for locking the seat support in its adjusted position, a roller adjustably mounted on said member, a flexible back for the seat, adapted to be wound upon the roller, means for winding the back upon the roller when the latter is adjusted, said means serving to normally hold the back taut, means for locking the roller against rotation and means for locking said roller in its adjusted position.
35. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a hinged seat support, a folding handle, means for moving the seat support into position by the movement of the handle, a member for locking the seat support in its adjusted position, a roller adjustably mounted on said member, a flexible back for the seat, adapted to be wound upon the roller, means for winding the back upon the roller when the latter is adjusted, said means serving to normally hold the back taut, means for locking the roller against rotation and means operatively related to the last said means and the said member for securing the roller in its adjusted position.
86. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a hinged seat support, a folding handle, means for moving the support into position when the handle is operated, a member adapted to lock the support in position, a spring roller adj ustably mounted on said member, a flexible back adapted to be wound on the roller, said roller being adapted to be moved upon its support to wind or unwind the back thereon, means for locking the roller against rotation, and interengaging means operatively related to the roller lock and the support for the roller to secure the roller in its adjusted position.
37. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a hinged seat support, a folding handle, means for moving the support into position when the handle is operated, a member comprising spaced arms, one end of the arms being pivotally connected to the seat support, and the other end adapted to engage the handle to lock the seat support in position, collars slidingly mounted on the arms, a spring controlled roller journaled to said collars and between the arms, a flexible back adapted to be wound upon the roller, said collars being adapted to be moved upon the arms to cause the back to be wound upon or unwound from the roller, means for locking the roller against rotation and means for locking the collars in their adjusted position.

In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a hinged seat support, a folding handle, means for moving the support into position when the handle is operated, a member comprising spaced arms, one end of the arms being pivotally connected to the seat support, and the other end adapted to engage the handle to lock the seat support in position, collars slidingly mounted on the arms, a spring controlled roller journaled on said collars and between the arms, a flexible back adapted to be wound upon the roller, said collars being adapted to move upon the arms to cause the back to be wound upon or unwound from the roller, a pivoted dog on one of the collars means operatively related to the roller and adapted to be engaged by the dog to lock the roller against rotation, and means for locking the collars and roll r in their adjusted position.

In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a hinged seat support, a folding handle, means for moving the support into position when the handle is operated, a member comprising spaced arms, one end of the arms being pivotally connected to the seat support, and the other end adapted to engage the handle to lock the seat support in position, collars slidingly mounted on the arms, a spring controlled roller journaled on said collars and between the arms, a flexible back adapted to be wound upon the roller, said collars being adapted to be moved upon the arms to cause the back to be wound upon or unwound from the roller, a pivoted dog on one of the collars, means operatively related to the roller and adapted to be engaged by the dog to lock the roller against rotation, and a projection on the dog, said arms being provided with a recess adapted to receive the projection to lock the roller and collars in their adjusted position.

Ina folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a hinged seat support, a folding handle, means for moving the support into position by the operation of the handle, a locking member, said member being pivotally connected to the seat support and adapted to engage the handle for securing the support in position, a roller adjustably mounted upon the locking member, a flexible back, means for automatically winding the back upon the roller, said roller being adapted to be adjusted on the member to unwind the back therefrom, means for locking the roller against rotation and means for securing the roller in its adjusted position.

In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a hinged seat support, a folding handle, means for moving the support into position by the operation of the handle, a locking member, said member being pivotally connected to the seat support and adapted to engage the handle for securing the support in position, a roller adjustably mounted upon the looking member, a flexible back, means for automatically winding the back upon the roller, said roller being adapted to be adjusted on the member to unwind the back therefrom, and a single means for locking the roller in its adjusted position and against rotation.
42. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a hinged seat support, a folding handle, means for moving the support into position by the operation of the handle, a locking member, said member being foldable with relation to the seat support and adapted to engage the handle to hold the support in position, a flexible back, an automatic roller mounted on the locking member and adapted to normally wind the back on said roller, and means for locking the roller against rotation, said roller being adapted to be released to permit the first said locking member to be folded with relation to the seat support, and said roller operating to Wind up the back as the parts are folded or collapsed.
48. In a folding perambulator, the combi nation of a running gear frame, a hinged seat support, a folding handle, means for moving the support into position by the operation of the handle, a locking member; said member being foldable with relation to the seat support and adapted to engage the handle to hold the support in position, a flexible back, an automatic roller mounted on the locking member and adapted to normallywind the back on said roller, means for locking the roller against rotation, said roller being adapted to be released to permit the first said locking member to be folded with relation to the seat support and means for supporting the locking member in a folded position with relation to the support, said roller operating to wind up the back as the parts are folded or collapsed.
44. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, wheel supports rotatable with respect to the frame, a folding body structure supported on the running gear frame, a seat on the frame, sides for the seat foldable with respect to the seat and the frame, said folding sides including an upright pivoted to the running gear frame, a portion of said upright depending below the running gear frame, means connected with the wheel supports below the running gear frame adapted to be engaged by the depending portion of the upright to lock the supports in position, a handle, means whereby the operation of the handle will adjust the body structure and means .operatively related to the folding body structure and the handle for locking the latter against movement.
45. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a hinged body structure embodying sides of the seat, a folding handle, a defiectable brace for the seat sides, means for moving the brace and said sides into position by the operation of the handle, a folding member for the body structure, and means for locking the body structure and the handle in their adjusted positions.
46. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, wheel supports rotatable with respect to the frame, a folding body structure on the running gear frame, said body structure including an upright pivoted to the running gear frame, a portion of said upright depending'below the running gear frame, means connected with the wheel supports below the running gear frame to be engaged by the depending portion of the upright to lock the supports in position, a handle, means whereby the operation of the handle will adjust the folding body structure, means for locking the handle against movement, and an extensible flexible back for the seat.
47. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, a foldable body structure thereon, a folding handle, a deflectable brace for the body structure, means for moving the brace and body structure into position by the operation of the handle, a folding member on the body strucname to this specification, in the resence of t-uie and detached from the handle, and two subscribing Witnesses, on this 18th day means respectively on the handle and memof February A.
