OF METUGHEN, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN PlCKET-FENCE POSTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 109.402, dated November 22, 1870.
T0 a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, AUGUSTUS M. FREE- MAN, CHARLES l?. IDELL, and BERGEN VAN# DERiovEN, of Metuchen, in the county of Middlesex and the State of New Jersey, have in vented a new and useful Improvement in Fence- Posts; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved post; Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The purpose of our invention is to make an improvement on picket-fence posts; and the invention consists in combining with a mortised base a peculiarly-constructed upright, as hereinafter described.
A is the base or foundation-block of the post, which is made of such a size as to securely anchor the post to the ground. The base A is made of clay-such as is used for making ordinary bricks and pottery-which is molded and baked or burned in the same manner as bricks are baked or burned. The block Ais formed with a mortise or socket in its upper end to receive the tenon of the upper part of the post. B is the body or `upper part of the post, which is a thin iron bar slightly tapering toward its upper end. Upon the lower end of the post or bar B is formed a tenon, B', which enters the socket of the base-block A, where it is securely cemented in place. One edge of the post B is slit, and a portion, b2, near its lower end, is turned to one side at right angles, and is perforated for the attachment of the lower rail and base-board. A portion, b3, ofthe edge of the post B at its upper end is turned to one side at right angles, and perforated to receive the top rail of the fence.
We are aware of the patent granted to J E. and A. H. Kendeigh for a post bearing some similarity in certain points to our invention, and we therefore desire distinctly to disclaim all that is shown and described by them.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The mortised base A, combined with a slit and bottom shouldered upright, B, having a perforated and angled top and bottom, bJ b2, to form an improved picket-fence post.
AUGUSTUS M. FREEMAN. CHARLES I?. IDELL. BERGEN VANDERHOVEN.
