Wijf/ff@ N PEIERS. PHDTOMTHOGRAPNER, WASHINGTuN. u. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
GEORGE F. REARDSLEYyOF OXFORD, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND A. S.
PARKER, OF GREENE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 109,374, dated November 22, 1870.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEO. F. BEARDsLEY, of Oxford, in the county of Ohenango and State of New York, have, as I believe, invented new and useful Improvements in Window-Stops or Window-Catches; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull and exact description of the same, reference being had to the drawings that accompany and form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a view of a portion of the jambcasing andawindow-sash with my stop or catch attached and in position to hold the sash down; Fig. 2, the catch of fastener detached, the movable parts being represented in position to hold the window when raised; Fig. 3, a view exhibiting the interior parts at rest, so that the window-sash may be moved either up or down without the catch taking effect.
Letter A represents the jamb-casing of an ordinary window, B, of awindow-sash; O, the metallic catch or fastener, in the peculiar structure and operation of which consists my invention; D, the outer case of this catch; E,a circular bolt, each end reaching to the jamb-casing A and operative in the mortises of said casing for retaining the sash; f, a channel in which said bolt e moves either way; g, a lever by which the bolt'e is actuated, h, aflat spring acting upon the lever g, retaining it in theposition presented in Figs. 1, 2, or 3, as may be desired; z', pivot on which the lever g turns; j, a knob to which the thumb and finger are applied for changing the position of the lever g and bolt e,- k, a head upon the lever g, having the three especially-arranged surfaces l Z and m, each of which may be brought to rest upon the outer face of spring h.
Ihe object of myinvention is to provide a cheap and durable window-catch that shall retain the sash in the desired position, either down or up, and be as well adapted for convenient use upon the sash that is balanced by weight and pulley as upon any other.
My device consists in the combination of a bolt in the form of a part of a circle, and a keeping -lever connected therewith, and a nearly straight spring lying within the arc of the circle described by the bolt, to act upon the short arm of said lever, keeping the said bolt in the position desired, as herein described and set forth.
Whenthis catch is used upon sash balanced by weight, the plane surface m upon the head of lever g provides for the position of parts indicated in Fig. 3.
In operation, if the window is down and I Wish to raise it, Iput one hand to the sash and the other to the knob j, moving it until the upper end of the bolt e comes to meet the jamb-casing, as indicated by red dotted lines in Fig. l; and when the other hand has raised the sash to position of red lines in this said figure the force of the spring 7b will carry this said upper end of the bolt e into the notch or mortise I), and the sash will come to rest.
'Ihe plane surface m upon the head k of lever g is to enable the bolt e to come to rest in position exhibited in Fig. 3, which will be of great convenience when the sash is supplied with weight and pulley, as the bolt is inoperative and the sash is raised or lowered without regard to the fastener. Y
As already intimated, these fastenings are alike applicable to the upper as well as lower sash, although upon sashV balanced by weight they would seldom be required, except upon the ground floor or other equally exposed positions, and they are each equally applicable to the right or left hand side of a sash, and Without any interchange of parts.
I do not claim the use of a circular bolt or the circular formof the same, for that has been before used. Y
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the keeping-lever g, the bolt e, and spring h, lying within the arc of the circle described by said bolt e, as specified and setforth. f
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE F. BEARDSLEY.
