PATENTE N0V1541870 'about'. itdet sind v (tithe Letters Patent No. 109,332, dated November 15. 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN PIPE-COUPLINGS.
The Schedule referred to in than Letten Patent and making part of the mame.
I, JoHN 1I. McGowan, of Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Elastic Pipe-Coupling ibr-WaterTanks, of which the -following is a speciiication.
Nature mul Oli/'ect 0j' .the Invention.
This invention relates to an improved jointorcoupling for the spout or goose-neck 'f railway water-tanks, whereby it is prevented from leaking, the'said joint or coupling, in its preferred form, being also such as to permit a slight lateral dexibility to enable 'the spout to he conducted without difticulty to the well-hole of the tender, even should it be not precisely in line with the tank-pipe. J
General Description. 'with reference to the Draw-ing.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of the contiguous portions of my improved tank-pipe and spout yin their open condition Figure 2 shows the saine parts in their closed condition.
Eignre 3 is a top vicw of the same parts, also in their closed condition.
A represents the custohiary fixed pipe which communicates with the tank or reservoir, the iunerend of said pipe being provided with any approved forni of valves or cock for controlling the lowof water.
.The outer end of-this pipe terminates ina belimouth, B, having an in\varllysloping face, b, which serves as aseat for the Aelastic packing-ring or gasket .0, preferably of India rubber, which 'ring is securely held in posit-ion by the annular clamp D.
The eieetivc or nipping-surface oi' the clamp is nn'- dercut or excavated, as'v'shownt 2 fuderto prevent the accidental dislodgement of the gasket.
'Ihc annular clamp secured within the bell-mouth by 'means o bolts E", whim permit any amount of pressure being brought to haar on the gasket.
Ihe 'movable and adjustable spout F is provided with iiariug mouth, G, havingthc form of a hollow spherical segment, which is adapted when saidspout brought in line with the pipe A to lit snugly around and against thc face of the gasket, and thereby to form a perfectly' water-tight joint between the two members A and I".
In order to secure an equal bearing around the gas'- kot, and at the saine time to permit some lateral di.
nection of the spout to suit the position of the wellhole in the tender-tank, the movable spout F is preferably both hinged and swivcled to the fixed pipe A iu the i'oilowing manner: A
Protecting from thepppcr side of the spout F is a bracket or ing, II, that is traversed by a bolt, I, one
end of which is screw-threaded, as at t, whileits other end is provided with an eye, e", for the reception of a pivot, J, with which said boit is united. to a swivelbearing, K.
The swivel-bearing K turns upon a boss, L, on the upper side of pipe A, and is connected to the said boss by a pivot-boit, N.
Nuts, O O, upon the bolt or rod I, enable the spout F to be adjusted in such a manner as to cause its mouth G to it accurately and equably against and around the elastic packing-ring or gasket C, whenever said spout is brought in line, or nearly so, with lthe fixed pipe A. l
As. the elastic packingring0 projects some distance beyond the edge of the bell-mouth B, it is evident that the spout F may 'ne moved iuanydirection without destroying the water-'tight coupling between the two members A and F, and this joint, owing to the elastic nature ot' the gasket and the spherical form of the mouth G, will remain free of leakage notwithstanding anysiight deflection oi' the spout.
As the spout F overhangs some distance beyond the discharging-end. of fixed'pipe A, the weightof the former causes itsmouth Gr to press against the gasket C with suiiioient torce to insure a watertightjoiut for the ordinary tlow of water from' such tanks to the tender. i
Ihc use ot' the elastic packing-ring C permits the .parts A and i to be plain castings without groundjoints or other expensive finish, which joints are liable, notwithstanding their cost, to become inoperative,
either from corrosion or the freezing wget-her of their contiguous surfaers:
For the above reasons my arrangement alibi-ds both a cheaper and more reliable, as well as a more enduring coupling.
In some cases gasket to the spnlt, resented.
i.; may hc .preferable/.tcV attach the and not tc the pipe as here rephand. f
JGHN H. MCGOWAN.

JAMES H.' Laviana.
