HENRY 0. JOHNSON, OF BUDA, ILLINOIS.
SEPARATOR.
T0 all whom t may concern Be it. known that I, HENRY O. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buda, in the county of Bureau and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Separators; and l do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use 'the same.
This invention relates to an apparatus for washing and separating sand and gravel and freeing the gravel from foreign matter.
lThe object of the invention is to provide a separating apparatus in the form of a flume by means of which sand and gravel may be speedily and economically washed and thoroughly separated and the gravel freed from impurities and foreign matter such as clay, iiour, sand and the like.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and .arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 represents a central vertical longitudinal sect-ion of one form of this improved separator; Fig. 2 is a top plan View thereof; Fig. 3 is a vertical cross sectional view thereof; Fig. 4 is a detail plan view of the screen; Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4.
1n the embodiment illustrated a fiume 1 is shown which may be constructed of any suitable material and of any desired size and as shown comprises a channel shaped body having a bottom 2 and vertical sides 3 which may be of any desired width. The bodyv of the fiume is open at one end and arranged therein and adj ustably secured to the sides thereof is a false screen bottom 4 formed from any suitable material, a sheet metal plate being preferably employed. This false screen bottom is provided wit-h elongated triangular shaped openings 5 preferably arranged in parallel rows and disposed obliquely and parallel with each other in the rows with the ends thereof eX- tending toward the upper or inlet end of the fiume as is shown clearly in Fig. 2. At the lower larger end or base of each of the openings 5 from opposite corners thereof are formed diverging slits 5a producing a triangular shaped tongue 6, the apex 7 of Specification of Letters Patent.

which extends toward the opening and is bent downwardly or deflected to form an enlarged mouth 8. The mouths 8 prevent the material from catching and lodging in the lower larger ends of the slits or openings and are deemed an important feature in the successful operation of the separator. This false screen bottom 4 of the separator is adjustably supported in the body of the flume by angle bars 11 to which the bottom 4 is secured in any suitable manner.
The angle bars 11 are slotted transversely at suitable intervals as at 12 and with said slots are engaged fastening bolts 13 which are passed through the sides of the body of the flume and are provided with clamping nuts whereby when the angle bars 11 are adjusted thereon, said bars may be securely clamped to the sides of the flume and held in their adjusted positions for supporting the false bottoni at a greater or less distance from the main bottom 2 of the fiume. thus bolting or fastening the false screen bottom 4 of the flume, said bottom may be readily adjusted to a greater or less height above the bottom of the fiume according to the character and condition of the material being separated.
In the operation of the separator the flume is preferably supported or arranged to have a fall or inclination of from one-half to two inches per lineal foot to impart the desired velocity to the stream of water passing through the same. The water is turned into the upper end of the fiume in a stream of the desired volume and in passing through the fiume fills the space below the false screen bottom 4 and to a dept-h of from one to two inches more or less above the bottom 4 according to the character and condition of the material being washed, the water flow ing both above and below the screen bottom 4. The material to be washed and separated is also deposited in the higher end of the flume on the screen bottom 4 where said material receives the force of the water and is carried thereby downwardly across the false bottom such parts of the material as pass through the screen being carried along by the water over the main bottom of the fiume as will be readily understood. The material in thus being carried over the screen bottom 4 by the water has the finer parts and impurities therein washed and separated therefrom, the smaller parts such as sand passing through the slots in the screen bottom 42 and the enlarged mouths 8 thereof pr-event clogging of these slots. The material may be fed or discharged into the upper end of the flume by hand or in any suitable manner and the washed and 'sepA arated material is caught and conveyed by any suitable apparatus to any desired place of deposit. y
I claim as my invention: l
1 A separator flume having a false bottom provided with triangular openings each having a depressed lip at the base thereof, the free end of the lip terminating at the base of the triangle and extending toward the opening. i
2. A separator fiume having a 'false bottom provided with triangular openings and with diverging slits eXtending from two corners of said openings with theportion between said slits bent downwardto form an inclined lip or chute to facilitate the passage of the material beingtreated over the false bottom, said lip preventing the material from lodging and filling said triangular openings.
3. A separator fiume having a false bottom with a plurality of elongated openings therein, said openings tapering toward one end and each havingdiverging slits extending from two side Walls thereof at the wider end thereof with the portions betweensaid slits bent downward to form an inclinedlip extending toward the tapered end'ofthe opening. A
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit nesses.
