WILLIAM H. CADWELL, OF BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT.
COMBINED BOTTLE-CAP AND EXTRACTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed- January 29, 191s. Serial-No. 744,801.
Patented ap a, ram.
To all whom'z't may concern:
Be it known that I,'W'1LLIAM H; CAnwnLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain,'in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain .new and useful Improvements in Combined Bottle-Caps and Extractors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined bottle cap and extractor, among the principal objects of the invention bein the provision and extractor involving the'invention. Fig.
2 is a sectional ,view of the same, less, however, of the bottle being shown.
'Like charagjfters refer to like parts throughout the several figures of the drawmgs. In the drawings I have shown a portion of aglass bottle or jar such as is used at the present time for containin milk and which being of the ordinary c aracter requires no detailed description. Said bottle or jar'i'sequipped with a cap or closure such as that denoted in a general way by 3 and which may be made from any suitable material such for instance as sheet metal.
The matter. of material, however, from,
which the cap is formed is not altogether essential, for I will hereinafter describe a cap of composite construction. Depending from the substantially flat body of the said cap or closure 3 is a flange 4 rounded'somewhat to partially embrace or hu the external be'adedportion of the -botte or jar 2 to thus effectually close the same against the admission of dust, germs and the like,
thereby making the cap sanitary. Thisdepending flange 4 may befurnished. with several resilient tongues as 5 of whic'h there may be any desirable-number and which are 2 adapted to be sprung over the. underside of the beaded ortion of the neck to prevent accidental dis odgment of the'cap 3which,
however, can be removed by comparatively slight manual force.
the aid of sultable dies or otherwise.
One of the novel features of the invention is the provision of a cap extracting prong projecting from the periphery of the cap. InFigs. land 2 this prong is denoted by 6 and is integral with the cap 3. Said cap with the prong 6 and the clip members 5 can be readil made from sheet metal by The prong 6 extends from the lower edge of the flange 5 and it is sutficiently pointed or sharpened to permit its easy penetration of a paper cap or disk such as is now used on the average milkbottles orjars. It will'be supposed that the jar 2-is full of milk or in fact any other beverage and that the gjsame is provided with one of these'paperbaps Ordinary methods ordinarily used for removing these paper caps are usually I01- lowed with scattering of milk which fre-.
quently goes onthe clothing. With the use of the cap 3 'providedwith the extracting prong or barb this undesirable result can be prevented. To remove the paper cap the cap 3 is held at a slant thereto and the prong or barb dis-pushed through the paper cap or between the edge of the cap and the bottle rimat which polnt it becomes a simple matter to pry the paper cap from place when if it has been pierced by the barb or prong 6:, it can be pulled or shaken therefrom, and'the cap 3 can then be applied. The pron or barb 6 does-not project sufficiently beyon the periphery of the cap 3 to permit its being forced too far into the paper cap and the size of cap 3 is too great forit to enter the neck of a milk bottle,
therefore it cannot be pushed against'one of the paper caps in such amanner as -to force the latter into the contents of the bottle with the attendant undesirable result before mentioned.
What I claim is: A bottle: cap comprisin a substantially flat-circularbodya and a circular flange depending from sea body, said flange having at its lower edge a barb extending outwardly at approximately aright angle to the axis of said body and also having several resilient clip members. I
In testimony whereof I aflixmy signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. CADWELL.
