CORD AND ROPE MAKING DEVICE.
"pecification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 31,1914.
Appiicatior filed September 28, 1812. Serial K017221920.
To all whomz't may concern.
Be it known that I, MARY MAGDALENE LAMY, a citizen of the United States, 1681(1- ing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cord and Rope Making Devices, of which the follow ing is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relatesto new and useful improvements in cord and ropemakmg devices and more particularly to a device adapted for use in connection with a sewing machine of the usual or any desired type and the primary object of the invention is to provide a device for twisting a plurality of threads or cords in regularity to form a larger cord or rope, as the case may be.
A further object of the invention resides in providin a device having a plurality of movable pulleys thereon which are adapted to cooperate with the belt of a machine and a still further object resides in providing hooks on certain of the pulleys which are adapted to engage with the plurality of threads or cords to twist the latter as the pulleys are revolved.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in thenovel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a front elevation showing my device applied to use thereon. Fig. 2 is a sideelevation of the member carrying the pulleys. Fig. 3 is a similar View thereof showing sections of the frame-work separated; and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section through the device as seen on line 4-4, Fig. 2.
In describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and inwhich 1 indicates a sewing machine table, upon which is mounted the body 2 of the machine which is provided with the usual fly-wheel 8 having a pulley in connection therewith, over which extends the belt 4. This belt extends through openings in the table 1 to be engaged with the lower operating wheel 5.
Mounted on the table 1 immediately adj acent the forward reach of the endless belt 4, is the twisting portion of my device which consists first of a plate 6 secured to the table through the medium of a bolt 7 and winged nut 8. Hinged to the one end of the plate;
6, is an additional plate 9 which is secured to the lower wall of a casing or housing 10 1 the section 12, said slots being curved down-- wardly and outwardly at their rear ends, as shown at 15, whereby the section 11 may be securely held to the section 12, when once positioned in engagement therewith. The side walls of the sect-ion'12 are also provided with a plurality of additional slots 16 which are straight and arranged alternate to the slots 14 and loosely mounted in these slots and adapted to be extended to .the rear ends thereof, are the .pintles of a'plurality ofadditional pulleys 1-7.
The belt 4' of the machine is ada ted to be received between the sets of pul eys 13 and'17 and when the section 11 is locked in engagement with the section'12, this belt will securely retain the pulleys 17 in the rear ends of the slots 16 and cause'the same to be revolved as the machine is operated. It must be also here stated that the section 12 of the casing or housing 10 which 'is mounted on the plate 9, is inclined slightly rcarwardly when positioned on the table of the machine to readily accommodate therein the one reach of the belt 4, which is usually also inclined in yiew of its an n per smaller wheel .to a lower larger whee Extending from both sides of the pulleys 17 are the hooks 18 which, in the prlesent instance, are extensions of the pintles thereof, but which may be engaged with the pulleys in any manner if desired,and as it will be seen from this constructionalone, that the pulleys 17 are operating pulleys, the other pulleys 13 will, for convenience, be termed idler pulleys. The hooks 18 are adapted to be engaged with a plurality of threads or cords 19 as shown in Fig. 1, and from this construction, it will be understood that as the machine is operated,'the,pulleys 17 will be caused to rotate, thereb'yrotating' the hooks and causing the threads or cords extending from to be twisted. For engagement with the opposite ends of the threads or cords, I provide a bar 20 having a weight 21 at the lower end and provided with a plurality of hooks 22 extending from one face thereof. There may be as many hooks on the bar as are desired, preferably the same number as are provided on the one side of the twisting device, and the opposite ends-ofthe threads or cords 19 are engaged with said hooks. T his bar 20 of the cord holder is connected to one end of a cord or rope 23 which extends from a drum 25whieh is provided with a clamp or the like 26 which may be clamped to any desired stationary object, I having shown a chair 27 for the purpose, in the drawing.
From the foregoing description of the construction of my device, the operation thereof willbe.readily understood and it will be seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive and efficient means for carrying out the objects of the invention.
While I have particularly described the elementsbest adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit 'or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described this invention, what I claim is 3 1. A rope making attachment for sewing machines including a bracket adapted tobe detachably secured to the sewing machine table in inclined position to conform to. the incline' of the sewing machine belt, a plurality of superposed operating pulleys cari-iexl'by said body and provided with cord engaging integral hooks, and a plurality of superposed idler pulleys disposed alternate with said operating pulleys and serving to rality of superposed operating pulleys carried by one of said members and provided with integral cord engaging hooks, and a a plurality of superposed idler pulleys carside of the sewing machine belt, a plurality of operating pulleys carried between the side walls of one of said members, hooks carried by said pulleys, and a plurality of idler pulleys carried between the side walls of the other of said members and disposed alternate with said operating pulleys and adapted to confine said belt against said operating pulleys.
4. A rope making attachment for sewing machines including a. bracket formed of a pair of channel members, the side walls of onemember being provided with a plurality of slots formed at the inner ends with enlargements, a plurality of pulleys carried by the other of said members and having their pintles passed into said slots and seated in said enlargements rwhereby to removably lock said channel members together to table in inclined position whereby to adapt the bracket to receive and conform to the incline of the front side of the sewing masignature in tie presence of two witnesses.
