NT @Fliilil CHARLES N. BATT, OF WATERFORD, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF 'ONE-HALF TO JOHN CHAPMAN, 0F ALBANY, NEW YORK.
FOLDING-MACHINE.
To ZZ Iwiaom 'if may conc-cra Be it known that I, CHARLES f. BATT, a citizen of the llnited States of America, residing at the village of W'aterford, iu the county of Saratoga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Iniprcwements` in Folding-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to feeding mechanism for folding machines, and the object of my invention is to provide an auxiliaryv guide for the purpose of conducting sheets of paper or similar material to the place for operation; together with such elements and combinations as are hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed. 'I accomplish 'these objects by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a plan of my invention attached to the machine. Fig. Q is a section along the line 1-1 on Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a side velevation of my guide, with parts broken away. Fig. 4 is a plan of the guide. Fig. 5 is a section along the line X-X on Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a section along the line Z-Z on Fig. 3.
' Similar letters refer to similaiparts throughout the several views.
A, represents a table made up of a series of`rollers, B, B, placed diagonally across the table, as shown in Fig. l, and such as is in' common use in folding machines whereby the sheets of paper, 3, that are placed upon the table, A, are, by the rotation of the rollers, B, B, gradually brought against one side, C, of the table where they are caused to assume a proper position on the table and are passed from the table over the parallel rollers, B', B', (which are placed at right angles to the axis of the table) to the folding mechanism, T, in proper position for. folding, so that they may be folded alike without further manipulation as to their relative position.
In order to increase the output from the table, A, especially where small portions of a sheet are used, I have invented a guide, H, which I secure about midway between the sides of the table in such a manner that those papers, 4, which are placed on the table at the right of the guide, H, will, by the rotation of the rollers, B, B, be brought into alinement against the guide, H, while those papers that are placed at the left of Specification of Letters Patent.

the guide, H, will,v by the rotation of the rollers, B, B, be brought into alinement against the guide,l C, as heretofore. Thus there can be twice as'many papers delivered to the folding mechanism. T, than when the guide, H, is not used.
The guide, H, is preferably made up of an angle plate, J, attached to a plate. K, by means of a series of suitable screws, Ii, passing through the slotted openings, j, in the angle plate, J. I attach to one end of the guide, H, a curved bar, M, carrying a plate, N, which is provided with a clamping means, O, for securing the plate, N, to the folding mechanism. In order to adjust the guide, H, I place the screw. m, through a slotted opening. n, in the angle plate, J, whereby the bar, M, may be rotated on the screw, y), which passes through a circular opening in the angle plate, J.
The clamping means. O, is comprised of two bell crank levers, S, S, attached to the underside of the plate, N, and adapted to engage the strips, t, t, of the folding mecha nism and be held in connection therewith by the screw, U, forced downward upon the ends of the bell crank levers, icausing them to grip the strips, t, z". The springs, f, tend to return the levers, S, S, to their former position after the screw, U, is released.
For the purpose of securing the end of the guide, H, opposite that to which the plate, N, is secured, I arrange a curved bracket, V, engaging the bottom of the plate. K2, attached to angle plate, J, which. will permit the end of the guide, H, to be placed on the stationary plate, I), by placing the plate, K2, on the table and pressing the bracket, Y, under the table, which will be held in position by the screw, c, which passes through a slotted openingc', in the plate, K2, and which is adjusted by the screw, YV, which engages the plate, D. The lower edge of lthe plate, K, is cut outdiagonally at ,70, 7c, for the purpose of permitting the plate, K, to come close to the rollers, B, B, and to allow for the uninterrupted revolution of the diag onally placed rollers, B, B. At one end of the guide the lower edge is curved at 7c. 7c', in the portion, K', of the guide, H, for the purpose of permitting the rotation of the rollers, B', B, which extend across the table at right angles to the axis of the table.
I do not wish to limit myself to the particular means for attaching the guide or a table rovidcol with a. series of diavonall placed rollers; a guide at one side of said tableyan auxiliary removaoie guide placed -.over said rollers provided With diagonal 'grooves along its sides adjacent to said rollers and into which a portion of said rollers may project; and means for attaching said auxiliary guide in 'any desired position between the sides of the table.
2. An auxiliary guide for a table for carrying and arranging in proper position for folding sheets of paper, comprising two plates, one. of which overlaps and projects beyond the other; a curved bar seemed at one end of the guide; clampin means cornprising two bell crank levers a apted to engage pertionsfo-E the folding mechanism; a screw adapted to press'the legs of the bell crank ievers apart and grip said portions; "with an adjustabienieans at the opposite end of, said guide for attaching to the stationary table- 3. In a feeding mechanism for folding machines,an auxiiiary guide provided along one side with a series of grooves; a table provided with a Series of rollers; said'auxiliary guide placed over said rollers in such position that 'the rollers shall rotate par 'tially Within said grooves; means for attaching said guide at one end to the folding machlne; and means for attaching the other end of said guide to the table.
