METALLIC TIE AND RAIL-FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD 1V. OSWALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Metallic Tie and Rail-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in metallic ties and rail fasteners, the primary object of the present invention being the provision of a tie provided with a longitudinal groove in the rail base receiving face thereof, for the reception of a 1nalleable fastening means to embrace the op posite edges of a rail base to lock the same against upward movement relative to the tie, there being placed to bridge the groove below the base of the rail a tie plate, which is fastened to the tie, such base plate forming a means to prevent the transverse creeping of the rail while the malleable fastening provides a means as before stated to prevent the upward movement of the rail.
The present invention is applicable to a hollow channeled tie or a tie with a central longitudinal web, it being essential however, that a longitudinal groove be provided in the rail base receiving plate adjacent the point for the reception of the rail base.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawings, and more particularly to Figs. 1 through 6, the numeral 1 designates the base of the tie, which is provided with an upstanding centrally disposed longitudinal web 2, which carries the rail receiving head 3, having the oppositcly extending plates 4:, there being provided longitudinally of the tie or at the rail base receiving portion thereof a groove 5, the purpose of which will presently appear.
Placed upon the portions 4 of the tie and bridging the groove 5 of the tie, is the tie plate 5, the detail structure of which is clearly shown in Figs. 3 and at. This plate is provided with the spaced lugs 6, two at each end thereof, and each plate is secured by means of rivets 7 passing through the apertures of the lugs 6 and the web portion of the tie. By this means the tie plate is secured at the rail bearing portion of the tie, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. Upon the upper face of the plate 5 are formed the parallel rail base engaging and limiting lugs 8, the recessed portions between the lugs 6 being cut away, as at 9, beyond the inner edges of the respective lugs S.
The base 10 of the rail 11 is disposed upon the body of the plate 5, and its adjacent edges between the respective lugs 8, while in order to secure the rail downwardly upon the plate a fastening member 12 provided with a. hooked driving end 13 is placed below the plate through the groove 5, the 0pposite terminal being bent up as at 14: to engage the opposite edge of the rail base 10 and thus securely clamp the hooked end portion 1.3 in engagement at the opposite side of the rail base. Thus the member 12 securely fastens the rail base downwardly and upon the tie plate 5', while the rivets 7 securely fasten the plate to the tie. By this means the rail is held against sidewise slid ing or tilting movement, yet is permitted the necessary longitudinal movement due to contraction and expansion.
In the form shown in Figs. 7 through 10, a hollow channeled tie 15 is employed, the
same being provided with the parallel flanges 16 and the longitudinally disposed central groove 17, as clearly shown in Fig. 8. This tie is of well known construction, and is merely shown to show the application of the present fastener for the rail thereto.
The tie plate 18 in the present instance,
at one side with the malleable terminal 14 bent to surround and engage the hook 19 of the tie plate. By this means the tie plate 18 which is riveted as at 22 to the tie 15, in combination with the fastening device 12, holds the rail in proper assembled position relatively to the tie. In the form of tie plate used in Figs. 9 and 10, additional lugs 20 are provided which correspond to the lugs 8 of the tie plate 5.
In the form of tie shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the lower longitudinal groove 1 formed in the under side of base 1 thereof is provided to prevent the tie from creeping while the I peculiar formation of the web 2 and its head 3, will permit of the rolling of the tie in a rolling mill, and will produce an exceedingly resilient tie as compared with an ordinary I-beam tie.
In Figs. 11 through 14:, the tie consists of the channeled members 24:2t', connected below at the rail bearing portion with the plate 25, thus providing a longitudinal space between the members. A rail receiving plate 28 is connected to the upper flanges of the members 2t24 by rivets 29, and the fastening member 12 with its head 13 and bent up end 14 is passed below the plate 28 and in the space 26 between the members 2t-24. Thus the fastener l2 embraces the base 10 of the rail and is held in place similarly to the fastener 12.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a tie having a longitudinal space in the rail bearing face thereof, of a rail fastener including a plate secured to the rail bearing face of the tie and spanning the space, and amalleable hooked head spike disposed in the space below the plate with its terminal beyond the rail base receiving portion of the plate, the insert terminal being bent inwardly to engage the rail base and clamp the hooked head upon the opposite side of the rail base while the body of the spike is below and parallel to the under surface of the base of the rail.
2. The combination with a tie having a longitudinal space in the rail bearing face thereof, of a rail fastener including a plate secured to the rail bearing face of the tie and spanning the space, and a malleable hooked head spike disposed in the space below the plate with its terminal beyond the rail. base receiving portion of the plate, the
