ADJUSTABLE FRAME.
- Application filed February 25, 1913. Serial No. 750,535.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that we, ANDR E\ V S. REID and ROBERT REID, citizens of the United States, and residents of Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Frames, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relatesto rectangular or namental frames for holding pictures,'which term is intended to include mounted photographs, placards, and other like artlcles which are usually displayed in frames.
The invention has for its object to provide a simple construction whereby a frame composed of four angular. members is provided, the frame being adapted to support the margin of a picture and to detachably secure the same, and being also adjustable to fit pictures of different sizes.
The invention consists in the improve ments which we will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 represents a front view of an adjustable frame embodying our invention, the frame being enlarged from its minimum size. Fig. 2 represents a section on line 22 of Fig. 1.. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of one of the members of the frame. Fig. 4 represents a section on line H of'Fig. 1.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the figures.
In the drawings, a, b, 0 andd represent four angular frame members each of the general form represented by Fig. 3, and comprising a fiat inner portion 2 constituting a p'art'of a picture seat, andan embossed outer portion 3 forming a. raised hollow rib or bead at the outer edge of the portion 2. The rib is preferably enlarged to form an ornamental corner portion 4, although said "enlargement may be omitted, as shown by Figs. 5 and 6. Each member is made of relatively thin sheet material, preferably metal. When the members are assembled as represented by Fig. 1, they form a rectangular frame, a portion of each member overlapping a portion of the next member, and
the overlapping portions being slidable rela-.
tively to each -other to contract and enlarge the frame. The seat portions and embossed portions ofeach member fit closely together as indicated by Figs. 2 and 4. The embossed portions 3 are nested together and prevent relative edge'wise displacement of the sections, means being provided whereby separatron of the sect ons from each other ,by' sidewise movement 1s prevented, said means being'preferably provided by forming integral tabs 5 on the inrier edges of the portions 2, each tab being bentiacross the edge of another portion 2 as shown portions 2' collectivelyconstitute a rectangular adjustable-picture seat for the back of a picture 6, andthe embossed portions 3 collectively constitute a continuous rectangular adjustable bead surrounding the seat and the margin of a picture thereon. The seat is covered and concealed by the picture.
A picture 6 represented by dotted lines in Fig. 2 is laid'upon the seat portions 2 and is.
surrounded by the embossed portions 3. To confinethe picture upon the said seat port1ons .we provide flexible ears 7 the side and end portions of which are detached from the Patented Mar. 24., 1914.."
by Fig. 2. The fiat.
portions 2 by U-shaped slits cut therein,
said ears being adapted to lie flush with the portions 2 so that they may slide under the portions 2 of other members, and being also adapted to be bent outwardly and caused to overlap the picture6, as shown by Fig. 2. The described frame may be suspended on a wall or it may be adapted to stand on a flat surface like an easel. To permit the picture to stand as last described, we provide a brace comprising a clip 8 adapted to detachably engage two overlapping seat portions 2, and an arm 9 projecting rearwardly from the clip and adapted to bear on a table'or desk top 10, and support the frame in an in-- clined position as shown by Fig. 4.. The brace is preferably made of thin sheet metal so that the outer arm of the clip is adapted to lie behind the picture 6, the arm 9 being preferably longitudinally embossed to give it sufficient stiffness. i
The outer edges of the outer embossed portion 3 may have tabs 12 which are bent.
inwardly under the edges of the niner embossed portion as shown by Figs. 2 and 4:. What we claim and desire to secureby Letters Patent is An adjustable frame composed offour angular members of thin sheet material each having a fiat inner portion, and an embossed outer portion, the members being slidably connected and collectively forming a rectangular adjustable seat for the back of a picture and a continuous rectangular adjustable bead projecting outwardly from and surrounding said seat and the margin of a picture thereon, said members being 10 provided with means for engaging the front of a picture and holding its back against the seat, and with means for confiningthe members in slidable contact with each other.
In testimony whereof we have affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
